    One question, how reliable are the reviews on Kogan?
    It seems that all the products on Kogan has somehow good reviews with plenty of votes whereas the same product on any other merchant site may not have the similar response.

    Always check a thermometer you buy against a calibrated one (hospital or doctor). (I have no idea about this Kogan one, but I thought a Braun one would be good - wrong).

    Here's why:

    You literally could die while it's showing the happy face ('your temperature is fine'). I can only presume the good reviews are from people influenced financially, or otherwise, to write favourable reviews - or those that do not have another accurate thermometer to compare this one to and love the ease of use while being oblivious to its inaccuracy.

    In theory, in the advertising, it sounds great - quick, non invasive readings. The problem is the readings are so far away from reality it is incredibly dangerous and should be withdrawn from the market.

    Usually I take note if an Amazon product has a lot of bad reviews and don't buy, but I was in a hurry to buy and stupidly didn't. I also presumed a quality company like Braun would surely produce an accurate product. How wrong can you be?

    Here's my use and how I know it's useless. I have cancer and have just started chemotherapy. On chemo you have to monitor your temperature religiously. If it gets to 38 C (37 C is normal) you have to go to hospital immediately. Ok, so I'm at home. Hospital is a 30 minute drive away. I felt hot and terrible. Tested my temperature with the Braun multiple times - a 'happy face' 36.6 C. It tells me, in effect, 'you're fine, be happy'. Tested with another simple digital, under tongue thermometer - 38.5 C. Both thermometers were consistent over half an hour.

    I live alone - I'm in a dilemma - do I believe the cheaper thermometer and go to hospital Emergency (long wait, possibly for nothing), or the expensive, fancy Braun one and stay home since it tells me I'm fine?

    Just to be sure I drove to Emergency at the hospital. Their (properly calibrated and accurate) thermometers confirmed the 38.5 C. In fact I was extremely ill, flaked out on the Emergency department floor and have been admitted for 4 days now being pumped full of this and that in an isolation room as I have zero resistance to infection. Serious stuff. If I had believed the Braun I would have stayed at home and could have been in real trouble.

    It is no exaggeration to say I could have died because of the Braun thermometer!

    BRAUN, AMAZON - THIS PRODUCT IS DANGEROUS. REMOVE IT FROM SALE!'

    Of course they still sell it.

        You probably can, but it would cost. Most calibrated devices need to be rechecked, for example, annually. My thinking is you can check by taking it next time you go to the GP. Ask them to take your temperature with theirs, then try yours. Presumably theirs is accurate, so you can compare.

        Another way is to use yours quite a few times and see how consistent it is. If you get a different reading each time (and you use it the same way), that's a giveaway it's not accurate.

      Sorry to hear that you have cancer. Have you emailed Braun directly and explained to them what had happened? This item shouldn't be for sale if its giving inaccurate readings.

        That review was 18 odd months ago. I'm 'cured' my haematologist reckons. I've told him he shouldn't say that - it'll get him into trouble one day. :-) I had one of the 'better' cancers you can get.

        In hospital they use ear ones, but I think that's mainly because they can use disposable plastic caps on them to prevent contamination.

        The under the tongue cheap Omron digital are good, but take about a minute to get a reading. Just if you buy one of the quick ones don't take it as gospel. Maybe get the Omron as a backup if you doubt the instant one. $7 insurance.

        The Braun one I got from Amazon sells for over $100 here. You’d think that would be ok, but it wasn’t.

        And yes, I emailed Braun too. I was pretty pissed about it. Amazon did refund the Braun and I didn’t have to send it back.

    I would caution buyers against this. Online reviews forest thermometers are very dodgy based on my experience.

    Further, I have been unable to find any reliable ear thermometer anywhere that I’m happy with. The mid range Braun’s could be ok, but there are still plenty of mixed reviews

            @wfdTamar: Just did, now in scared. But so far it never disappointed me. Also compared with original and was almost identical. But will try to get a in ear one. It's hard to read temperature on a hyper kid

              @hopper: That's probably a good compromise between the proven 'under tongue (but slow)' type and non contact (and I found - hopeless). I reckon it must need skin contact to be accurate particularly with cheaper domestic ones. I think you could pin down a hyper kid for long enough to jab something in the ear.

              If they complain, just say 'it's either this or up the Kyhber - your choice buster'. :-)

                  Looks like a non contact one - or at best a press to forehead. Not any better than what you have is it?

                  I'm just a berk off the street. not a thermometer expert. If you go for an ear one get one like hospitals use that has a nozzle that you poke in the ear.

                  Had to chuckle at this bit:

                  I wonder if their baby formula had CFDA tick of approval?

                  I think your best plan is keep using the one you have, but get the cheap Omcron under tongue one just to double check if in doubt. If your child is that sick they possibly will keep it there for the minute required.

    I bought $15 in-ear thermometer from eBay, it's as accurate as what my GP use.
    I literally took it to my GP and compare the result there.

    It's very similar to this one
