Whirlpool Alternative? (Without Regulation)

Whirlpool forums are completely over-moderated and I am looking for an alternative to discuss anything without regulation.

I absolutely loathe Whirlpool. I've was banned simply for voicing a dissenting opinion on a weight loss thread! I'm a member of something like 50 forums on the 'net, and I've never been banned before. The moderator told me "I don't think you'll fit in here". The weight loss thread there is dominated by people who insist on blaming others for their weight ("You lack willpower"), whereas modern medicine knows that hunger is regulated by genes, for example identical twins separated at birth are both either thin or fat, irrespective of the families they live with.

So Whirlpool has become a place where you have to agree with everyone else. If you don't chime in and sing the group song, even if you make your point very politely, the "in" group will "herring" your posts and before long you get told "goodbye". Appalling.

      • That is very true that you must conform to the endless fine print, so they can use any reason to ban you. It is not a balanced discussion when you have trigger-finger mods ready to press the delete button on any comment that doesn't fit their elitist model. Entirely over policed with a lot of superiority, just like cops in the USA….Guilty!, until proven innocent.

        • Very true!

I was having a beef with a vendor (Maxotel) for canceling my account without notice and then refuse to refund.
I have the email from their support to prove it, but WP would not allow me to post it there.

Instead WP changed the title of my thread based on the vendor's opinion.
          That really piXX me off!

I think the vendor sort of use that WP forum as their sales channel, and WP MOD are going alone with it to keep the vendor there.

          • @Chances: I accused the mods of taking bribes from a crooked company manager years ago
All it got me was time in the bin. So I just told all the mods what I thought about the whole affair,
and they banned me for it, well they can shove their corrupt forums/site where the sun doesn't shine

          • @Chances: MaxoTel said you were inciting outrage lol

      • I had my post deleted just putting up facts re Covid deaths etc, in reply to someone's over-inflated stats. They never got deleted, I did.
There is a narrative going on especially with vaccines and covid.

        • I thought comments can't be deleted….but "hidden", but still show up in the comment section under whatever reason it was hidden for. Of course we won't be able to read the hidden comments and these hidden comments arent the normal hidden comments you get for them being negged to oblivion…

      • I have had that many run ins with the bunch of ‘Nazi’ mods,it’s not funny. There is no black OR white.A lot of posters I know are just so over these guys.Just a bunch of tools.I have had to fight to get things reinstated. It has to be one of the worst forums out there, period.

Couldn't agree more! The Whirlpool forum is a bad joke. I'm talking about the "moderators", not the general Members.

It's actually a very interesting study of the quirks of human nature since the birth of the Internet. Neurotic, troubled people can get on there and become "moderators", and use that position to work through their mental aberrations by anonymously "fighting" complete strangers, and pretending to neutral referees. Their ability to summarily banish anyone at will, is the payoff. Because of that, they always win, and in that way their neuroses are briefly placated. Sad, really..

All Internet sites that operate as "forums" are no doubt prone to that kind of thing, (I expect OzBargain isn't), but Whirlpool is the very worst I've encountered in many years of using forums. I'm not quiet sure why they're so bad. It might be because mental health care in Australia is so expensive. Or maybe acting like pretend nazis is so much fun for that weak, troubled sort of person. I don't know.

On the practical side, their ridiculous over-moderation is harmful to their site. While the general members are usually helpful, polite, and engaging, their input is necessarily limited by their ever-present fear of "saying the wrong thing". And "the wrong thing" may be something as ludicrously simple and innocent as "No".

Nah, Whirlpool is a loser site. Always was, always will be.

        Cheers.

    • The problem with WP is that it is privately owned by the benevolent Dictator. So he can run the forum any way he likes. I agree the moderating is over the top and in the last couple of years it has got out of hand. The only way to have a less regulated forum would be to have a members forum run by members and not by one person.

I don't know if OCA forum is privately owned but it seems to be better at moderating than WP.

      • The only way to have a less regulated forum would be to have a members forum run by members and not by one person.

Or just have it run by one person but that one person doesn't regulate or care about any rules, so is free for all….

      • I believe his name is Simon(true) what I can gather from some one else, the guy is a complete tool.

  • Yes

  • Ozbargain is heavily moderated too. They're very sensitive about race and religion.

Nothing wrong with being a bit conservative.

      • +1

Nothing wrong with being a bit communist.

        • Take time to read the rules or use twitter if you just want to talk unhinged.

    • porn and sex too… they hate porn and sex

      Bless you, my child.

  • Hit up the Guidelines, especially the commenting ones and you'll be fine.

Now I'm really curious. Was it [Mod: Link Removed]?

          • @HighAndDry: I'm not sure if you guys are just playing with me, but it still says [Mod: Link Removed]…..maybe spell it out for me? Or describe the place for me if you can't spell it out for me to check out myself because quick finger mods are onto this whatever inappropriate site…..or perhaps it's just a malware infected site he suggested and the mods instantly found out about it to stop anyone else from clicking it because he was joking around?

            • +1

@Zachary: Even I saw it, it was [Mod: Link Removed]

Not even hi, g'day, how are ya, etc?

    • Well he/she tried Whirlpool and got kicked off and ended up here.

  • +2

Examples, OB likes examples. What did you say that was “regulated”?

  • -2

    completely over-moderated

Then stop saying things that most likely shouldn't be said.

WP is fine, unless you go off topic or abuse someone.

  • +2

Also moderated but I’m sure you can find something for your taste on Reddit

  • +1

join overclockers - better than whingepool.

    • +2

Yes another vote for Ocow - they are open minded and as long as you don't fail the (profanity) test I'm sure you'll be welcome.

  • You can probably try Reddit.

  • Usenet newsgroups.

  • +1

Go to the 'local' pub & talk to people

  • most forums won't permit topics on drug dealing and human trafficking

  • sorry hello, I am 9hundred. If you are curious, you can run a search on whirlpool for my history. I contributed often to conversations, but was always restricted in my comments. Most posts just got deleted and it messed up the conversation train. Most people just wanted to have an open discussion about any topic. They took my comments to heart and shut me out for a lifetime!!! Ridiculous and so sensitive.

  • try voat, haha just kidding

your best bet is to find a chan, infinitely better than reddit or any normal forum

  • Hy 9hundred , Not only U but 1000's of people are Banned on Aussie forums for No Bloooody Reason.
Yesterday I got Banned just for asking 2 Questions on

    https://www.austech.info/ date(15-01-2020)

if this is the Type of SHIT that Australia is Coming to - THEN HELP US, GOD !

Also Im Surprised to see down the Bottom - Are U associated with whirlpool.net.au - this is Ridiculous as Most Members here are Trying to get away from those ASXXXXXS at whirlpool !

  • Thank U Admin Ozbargain for Keeping this thread Open - when I get my first Bitcoins I will be donating to U.

  • I really don't think there is a forum discussion site that doesn't have rules…..unless you make your own and then state that there is no regulations or rules of any kind, but then you have to administrate it yourself (Or I guess pay someone else to do all the technical work(If you can't be arsed yourself, don't have the time to do it yourself or too hard to do it yourself), since you don't want to have it sourced by a thirdparty service (Such as forumotion) as that would mean you need to comply to their rules to setup your forum discussion site…and even if you don't have rules on your site, they could still shut you down since their rules will override your rules when they come for you….unless the law is on your side in which case the law stomps their global rules…heh.) and somehow get people interested enough to bother posting replies and stuff on it….establishing a name worth to post on is ….gonna take a while… I mean who would post on a forum where there's only one active user?

  • I never believe the bullies, for the bully it is always the victim to blame.

  • +2

LOL Whirlpool, what a poor excuse for a forum.

A bunch of sensitive IT losers on a power trip hiding anything they feel is “inappropriate, trolling or off-topic” (basically anything you post).

  • +1

What an absolute joke Whirlpool has become.

It seems they pick and choose what posts and threads are allowed.

    • exactly it used to be good with free thought, but now it is so highly regulated with the mods having too much control and directing the conversation. This has absolutely ruined the platform. Opinions need to be balanced otherwise it becomes a sponsored forum that is designed with a certain outcome in mind. The mods are power-hungry!!!

  • Forchan it's crazy over there.

  • +2

Yep, whirlpool is a joke for moderation
Ridiculously inconsistent & on ego/power trips
Mods even contradict one another & then close ranks when you point it out

    • +1

that's true about Mods contradicting each other. There is one that just loves to press the delete button to show his almighty powahh!!

  • +1

    Bunch of dictators.

Binned for correcting the benevolent dictator on Victorian roadlaw.

Binned by a drunk mod in a post deletion query response that was unreadable. Now edited by the good doctor and appears like i kill kittens. (No edit note appears).

  • +1

i miss the early 90s. too much PC bs going on and it seems like society is pussified nowadays.

    • +1

I was an adult in the early 90s. PC was well established as a popular term.
Prior to that, it was called "respect" or "good manners".

  • OCAU or Discord. Reddit Australia

    • what discord channel or group?

OCAU still removes posts if the posts are dangerous…

  • +1

whirlpool is absolutely terrible, the mods can break all the rules they want but if you call them out on it or complain about it, your comment just gets removed and that stupid mod chat (which is supposedly to let you complain if you are being treated unfairly or some crap) is a waste of time because the person who decides to take action or not is the one who you are making a complaint against.

it's like if you were to complain about an employee to bunnings or something but the person who hears your complaint and gets to decide what action, if any, is taken, is the one who is being complained about. if that doesn't tell you how stupid their system is, and by extension those that designed it and use it, i don't know what will.

no point talking to that tool simon either as this is by design and if you try to take it up with him, he will just spout some nonsensical bullshit and claim you are in the wrong, if he doesn't just ban you outright.

double standards are rife in that cesspool.

    • yep, I got banned for life!

  • +1

I got banned from there for questioning some theories posted by "Dollar Vigilante".

    • -1

      cool

      • -1

        What's cool about it?

  • To be honest, all of Aussie internet is "over-moderated". The fact is you'rte far better off just not putting the time and effort in, if you're concerned about getting banned.

    • reddit allows discussion of almost anything, the mods encourage open dissuasions and information sharing. Total opposite of whirlpool with their control freak operators. Powaaaar!!!

  • +1

Whirlpool has certainly lost its luster in recent years, there isn't as much activity or engagement across the board compared to 7-8 years ago. Its becoming less and less relevant as the years go by. It has a pretentious, stand off-ish, arrogant vibe with the way it is structured and operated, from the mods to some of the users themselves. The whole dedicated forum structure/interface is becoming less relevant and populated as people move to places like Reddit, dedicated social media groups, etc so OCAU or even these dedicated OzB forums are probably the best bet.

    • +1

yes, i agree, i haven't even been tempted to revisit. Reddit is really good.

    • +1

Reddit is starting to get more and more like whirlpool. Many subreddits have lots of rules now that you are expected to know or face immediat bans.

  • +1

If anyone is keen, I could attempt to put in some effort into making a fully unmoderated forum and you can talk whatever the crap you want without worrying about a ban or silent post deletion from any mods….? It might of course be lonely for the first couple of years or more depending on how popular the forum is…..

  • +1

My comment was hidden and I pushed back at the mod who put me in the sin bin for it. The mods run their sections with an iron fist were any sort of dissent is not tolerated, anyone who argues back is immediately put in the sin bin , where you remain unless you apologies. I just made a new account from work and I only use that at work and got around their little ban as they blacklist all ip addresses associated with that user name.

    • I have been unbanned, and finally created a new account only to discover that things are very much the same. It's the same boring farts that where there all those years ago.

      • +2

how did you get out of the penalty box ? One mod wanted me to say sorry after I had a crack at him/her. what a child.

        • It was so many years ago. I hadn't even revisited after my 'lifetime ban' and I guess they just realised the error of their ways or came to their senses, but I doubt it. They are absolute power trippers. My threads are still there though for some excellent entertainment.

          • +2

@9hundred: I just found your court and infringement threads lol , under 9hndred.
What got you banned in the end ?

            • @nzbro366: yes i got banned and made a new account so now I am NINEhundred.

              • +1

@9hundred: My banner was a mod called El Sledgo. He put my old account penalty box because I reposted content he personally deleted. I said he had the context wrong. Her said I didn't discuss why it was deleted first and didnt read the rules.
You can't use the word 'fan boy; in any context in whirlpool. El Slego is a real piece of work.If saif sorry he would restore my posting access.
I mean what kind if loser requests that ?

        • Same happened to me. Was put into a penalty box pending an apology. Looked like a good time to leave. Forced apologies mean nothing. Some powertripping incel isn't going to get a fake apology from me when they know full well they were in the wrong. Let the site die.

      • +1

I am surprised you got away with creating a new account. WP have every tool you can imagine to track down users who have created new accounts. It is a real shame that they put in all these resources in tracking down users when they could put in the resources to run the forum with out the iron fist.

        • +1

It's all ip based. They register all ips associated with that user account. Then they monitor them if you are in the penalty box or they ban you.
I started a new job and new ip address. They have no idea.

          • +2

@nzbro366: I wonder if it's the same here….just get a new job that gives you a new IP and just create multiple accounts and the mods/admins are none the wiser.

          • @nzbro366: I don't think it is just IP based as some users were using VPN to get around the ban but they still got busted.

Good on you for beating the ban.

            • @chuckynoris: VPNs are banned on the platform for all users anyway , you cannot use them. Its not a case of WP seeing through the VPN, you cannot access WP with a VPN.

  • +1

WP is becoming irrelevant now as you have the social media platforms. WP is is over moderated. If you talk with a mod for removing your post they will threaten to bin you for the argument of you pointing out that they are wrong. And if you go to WP now you will see tons of posts and threads deleted. It is coming to the point now that users are to scared to post because of the fear it maybe deleted.

We used to have Ausforum but sadly that was shut down. But when i was using Ausforum that Simon guy would come over and troll away. As WP use to get criticized by the users at Ausforum and Simon didn't like it lol.

    • I wonder if the mods are still the same ones from way back when Telstra pigpond was the only option for cable internet. Whirlpool was the only place to get information and aussie overclockers.

      • Simon Wright who started the forum in his late teens around 1998 is still overall admin but rarely takes part. Most are hand picked enforcers who patrol threads and control dissidents with penalty boxes and bans. The Mods are never wrong and arguing your points gets you in the penalty box or banned.

        • Never argue with the mod on Whingpool because your chance of getting a fair reply is rare.

  • +2

Whirlpool are full of the worst members of society, i have no doubt the mods are old mods from MSN chat rooms who get their jollies off internet authority.

I got banned for providing a counterargument to the whole incarceration debate using facts, stats and the experience of living in/near remote communities for work, but the lefties didn't want a bar of it.

But the worst thread and people on there reside in the AFL thread.

  • +1

Didn't realize so many people have been banned from an old forum such as whirlpool. I do know the mod in that forum tends to be much more lazier than before, not saying all the mods are lazy just a few and some are more arrogant so yeah chances of getting banned is quite frequent now.

    • Is now you realize so many peoples getting the bannings.

  • +1

LOL - just got a permanent ban on WP yesterday (too many offtopic posts).

Have been on the forum for over 20 years and it has gone downhill sharply in the last 5 years or so with respect to overzealous moderation.

Used to be some good mods on the place back in the 2000-2010 period - people you could have a conversation with.

Now it is a battleground of power hungry moderators looking for a kill count :)
