Best way to send phone interstate?

What's the best way to do it with tracking at a reasonable price? AU Post? Courier Service?

Two factors in consideration for me:

  • Cost
  • Reliability

I need a friend of mine to ship me a brand new boxed phone from Melbourne to Brisbane and unsure if I should get it insured or just send it via some form of registered post.

Any feedback would be much appreciated folks who have sent phones.

AU post website states limitations around LI ion batteries! Not sure if that affects phones.

just use auspost, whats so hard about it?

    • It's not hard at all. I have sent other stuff via aupost. But I have never sent a phone by au post and I knew there were/are some restrictions on LI ion batteries.

And also, comes the part of Insurance or registered post enough?

declare phone and send auspost by road transport

send registered + buy extra insurance cover (up to $5,000 value)

        • Sweet. Thanks. I managed to look up AU post insurance which seems reasonable!

Might actually contact Toll as well to see how much they charge. I am concerned about Au post reliability.

          • @aspirepranesh: Are you new in Australia?

            • @websterp: Nope. Been here for over 11 years. And I have never once had to send anything over $100 via post. I probably have sent like 5 mails during my time here!

I have read forum posts where aupost have lost parcels. Hence my post here. If I was buying something, the seller would generally take ownership of the item and I have paypal to cover me off. I purchase a lot of things online (thanks to OZB) and mostly have had no issues. Occasionally over the last 11 years, maybe 4 items have been lost and I have had paypal claims to cover myself.

And when I sell stuff, I only have done pick ups! I don't like the hassle of items getting lost.

In this case, this is from a mate to me and we don't want to get stuck if the item gets lost. He is getting me a new phone through his employer discount and I want to make sure it reaches me with no hassles to him.

        restrictions on LI ion batteries

A typical mobile phone battery is fine as long as it is properly and securely installed in the phone. In fact, you can't remove the battery in many mobile phones nowadays, so it's really not an issue.

Package it well and put it in an AusPost satchel. Will probably only cost you about $10 for regular mail or $14 for express.

What did Australia Post say when you asked?

    • I haven't been to AU Post yet. AU Post website states LI ion batteries can't be transported. I wasn't sure if it was by both road and air. I am not sure if AU post is reliable or better off using a courier service. Cost factor as well.

Since I am getting my mate to send it through to me, I am doing the ground work for him.

And I have also never posted anything this valuable before, hence the question about getting insurance.

I've sent a few mobile phones via Express Post with insurance, they do allow it.

What types of lithium batteries can be sent?

Regardless of what domestic or international mail service you use, Australia Post can only carry the following types of lithium batteries:

Lithium ion (rechargeable) - 20 watt-hour per cell or 100 watt-hour per battery
Lithium metal (non-rechargeable) - one gram per cell or two grams per battery

Lithium batteries can only be sent internationally (air or sea), or domestically by air if the battery or cell (maximum of two batteries or four individual cells) are installed in the device and meet all the packaging requirements.

Recalled, damaged or non-conforming cells or batteries are also prohibited from being sent by Australia Post.

I’ve sent plenty of things with batteries in them without issue. They don’t know what you’re sending.

  • just throw it in a postpac with some bubble wrap or something and throw it in the mail
