why is a fag responding to Tightbottom?

    • Freebie is hard beat…but close :)

  • Hi everyone,

Can I use Telstra Pre-Paid micro-SIM for iPad and iPad 2 on this tab?

    Thanks

    • I don't think micro sim fit on this

    • I think this tab using a NORMAL SIM card not a micro

    • Yes with a micro sim adaptor. You can pick one up from mobile accessory stores for between $1 and $5.
Alternatively if you're after a more permanent solution, pick up a blank sim from a store, give customer care a call and they'll update the sim details for your service from the old micro sim to the full size one. But guessing by the question you're asking you'll more likely go for the former not the latter.

      • P1000 supports SIM and USIM. Is USIM as same as Micro sim?

        • yes it is, it's just that it's not all that easy for the average person to find the Micro symbol (µ) on a normal keyboard so it has been dumbed down to Usim a lot of the time :-)

        • raydragon.. no.. what you wrote is incorrect.

USIM - UMTS capable SIM (basically a 3G SIM)
SIM - GSM SIM (or if you like a 2G SIM)

USIM and SIM are the same size. With GSM only SIM, you cannot use 3G.

Micro SIM is basically a smaller USIM.

Plese DO NOT put in a micro SIM in your Galaxy tab without a converter/adaptor. You need a micro SIM adaptor to convert a micro SIM into a SIM.

    • I did a bit of reading and apparently Telstra doesn't like you using an iPad plan on anything but an iPad. So much so that they will cancel the iPad plan and put you on PAYG.

      • Yeah, it may appear as though iPad plans are link to a range of IMEIs or some other unique identifier, wont stop you being able to use the micro sim, but you will be charged at PAYG rates of $2/MB.

  • Does anyone know if there is a workaround to use video calling on skype with this device?

    • a quick search says https://market.android.com/ you can use skype free

Make free Skype-to-Skype calls, and call phones at Skype rates on the move

      • Free* Skype-to-Skype IM and calls over 3G or WiFi
      • Cheap calls to landlines or mobile phones at great Skype rates
      • Instant message one or many friends at the same time

        • Data plan or WiFi connection required (calling in U.S - WiFi only)
      • Some handsets may not be supported

      • You need Android v2.2 to run Skype on a Samsung Galaxy S

      • Samsung Galaxy S

        Not quite the same thing.

  • anyone know if this is the P1000 or P1010 Model?
I already ordered one anyway, just interested to find out.

    • I thought the P1010 doesn't have 3G?

      • Ok, yep that seems to be correct, so it seems the mystery is solved ;-)

  • Anyone
"There is. Telstra uses 850/2100 or 850/1900/2100 (not sure which), Optus Voda 3 etc are 900/2100. They all use 2100 Mhz in major cities afaik but with this you would be without 3G in rural areas with Optus, and I have no plans to move to Telstra."

What is that mean? Can i still use or make call or browsing internet with vodafone or optus sim card?
I don't think I will use it in rural area.

    Another questions.
If I use the GPS, can I use it without connecting to internet? like normal GPS device?
how do I know it is android 2.2 because DES site shows 2.1?

    please let me know. THanks.

  • Bought one, I figured worst comes to worse I can use as wifi hotspot for my other devices. Can't wait to get it :)

  • EDIT: I just found the answer to my own question about whether it has a microSD slot, yes it had a SIM card slot and microSD slot.

Sorry for the comment space (Mods you may delete this (if you can), or if someone can teach me how to delete your own comments, if that is possible, much appreciated thanks)

  • Bought one… but the site sucked..

    • +4

Yes, we know it needs improvement and are already working on lots of fronts. We're collecting specific ideas for improvement here http://feedback.telstra.com.au/forums if you'd like to provide some.
      Thanks
      Gerd

      • Hey Gerd, Clicking on the link in your post brings up the message - Ooops! We can't find that page.

        • +2

Hi - yes, it's been out for a bit this morning. It's a hosted service (uservoice.com), so we don't control it directly.
Would you mind retrying again a bit later?
          Thanks
          Gerd

PS - just tried and it worked (9:27am)

        • -1

          still doesn't work. fail

        • confirmed @ 9.48pm SA time

Ooops! We can't find that page.

      • Hey rep, just bought and receive email but is says in the email "Subject to stock availability"??
Does this mean I have the order stock confirmed or not, does the website have live stock update otherwise you are going to have a major angry storm coming your way from those who bought already but not delivered due to your clause "Subject to stock availability" after the purchase!

        • I ordered mine on Friday and it stated "Subject to stock availability, credit approval and your delivery location, you should receive the goods/services you ordered within five business days". It appears to be a standard notice about how long it should take before you receive it - subject to it already being in stock. I therefore wouldn't be getting too concerned about "Subject to stock availability" if it was in that sentence. Clearly they have had heaps in stock. Still no sign of it being marked as sold out.

        • The moment we're out of stock we'll pull the offer. We can't guarantee that timing but will do our best.
          Gerd

  • Just wanted to ask, you can use this as a phone right? (not skype… actual phone calls using the SIM)

    Thanks :)

    • +1

Yes, but only on speaker unless you buy a bluetooth headset.

      • Wired headphones won't work? :(

        • Hmm I'm not sure about this.

        • Don't see any reason why wired headsets wouldn't work as they do with the phone

    • -1

you can. use a bluetooth or wired headset, you won't want to hold it make calls

      • +1

why not. it so cool talking with it to ur ear. :p

ordered one yesterday. but i'm on vodafone and tpg, looks like with my current sims i won't get 3g in rural area, need to get a data plan on telstra network for at leaset six months, any suggestions?

    • Not really many options for this, Telstra are the only ones that use their network so you can pretty much just find the available options on the Telstra website, You just need to choose the one that matches your requirements as closely as possible as no one here knows how much you are prepared to pay, maximum contract length, amount of data u need etc…

      http://www.telstra.com.au/bigpond-internet/mobile-broadband/…

That's more or less the options telstra give you for this unit.
They do have some Tablet plans which probably work out cheaper overall but only on the inferior T-Touch tablet.

  • can i use GPS on this without a sim card?

    • yes, you can.

      • i cant even tell u how many times this question has been asked

  • Hi, Any good data plans with Telstra for an occasional user to go with this? Thanks.

    • +1

Very casual use - $30 prepaid long life plan (6 months) - However, buy one the browser packs if you plan to use 3G (otherwise you will finish your $30 on 3G data within minutes). This is only cost effectively IF you only use less than 100MB of 3G data per month and virtually zero call. You could use it for 3 months if you buy the $10 browser pack each month - zero call though.

The best prepaid mobile data plans from Tel$tra are the iPad prepaid ones. You need to get a microSIM starter pack - $30 - 3GB data - expires 30 days - not sure whether you can keep the unused credit if you recharge before then. Catch is, you need a microSIM to standard SIM converter - quite cheap.. approx. $1 from eBay I think.

      • +2

The best prepaid mobile data plans from Tel$tra are the iPad prepaid ones.

I'd have thought the $150/12-months 10GB would be the way to go.

        • +1

Ipads get 12gb at the same price.

        • Like atlas pointed out, iPad prepaid has 12GB for $150 - 12 month expiry.

Generally, the iPad prepaid plans are better than the mobile broadband prepaid plans. Tel$tra iPad plans are reasonably competitive. You can only find better offers from Tel$tra on postpaid plans (contracts).

The main issue is the initial $30 micro SIM starter pack. It does come with 3GB download but expires in 30 days - I don't think unused downloads can be carried across (hope I am wrong on this one).

  • Can I cancel my order if I call tomorrow morning?

    • +1

probably, as they had heaps of buyers, it would take a long time to ship

  • so you can use this as a phone coz its allows sim/3g but wouldn't it be funny using it as a phone? i mean people would only use this for android applictions etc only right?

    • +1

yes, it can be used as a phone

      • It's going to be hard to carry around in a pocket.

  • +3

Telstra, for your next Ozbargain offer it would be great if it was some sort of cheaper Data plans that would complement this device.
I'd suspect that well over half of these will never see a Telstra Sim put in them ever, ie most of them will probably be used as Wifi only or from a Hotspot Mobile connection, often from other carriers.

Personally, I'd buy a sim if it was something like the 12 gig 12 Month plan for maybe $100, not interested in anything with 30 day expiry unless it was much cheaper and had a decent accumulating rollover option.
Until that time comes I'll continue to use mine on Wifi primarily.

    • +1

Telstra Rep, at very least why can't we get the same offer as for iPad i.e. 12GB for $150 for 12 months? Doesn't make sense that we can only get 10GB for the same price - with the only difference being we are using a different device. Why the difference in price???? With a heap of us buying the Galaxy Tab - including a lot of users who are currently non-Telstra - it seems like there's plenty of potential business if you provide a half decent price.

      • Agreed. I currently have Telstra for my mobile and called them up today to find out if there was a data pack deal they can do.. They told me to go into a shop as the staff there will be able to assist.

If I had time to go into a shop and talk to someone I would - but I don't. This is why I shop online. Seems pretty lame Telstra didn't include a data pack with this deal. A big waste.. they would have locked in heaps of new customers if they did.

I'll likely just go with TPG for the $1 a month deal as an existing customer and just tether it to my HTC (which is on Telstra) if/when I'm rural.

  • Telstra needs to increase its $5 data pack (30 day expiry) to 100mb. 30mb is too little.

  • I have just bought this and have an iPhone 3GS on optus which obviously includes data. Is there a way to tether this tab to my iPhone???

    • iOS 4.3 turns your phone into a personal hotspot. Link the tab to your phone with bluetooth and voila!

  • I am a bit surprised this has not been sold out yet. Maybe Vodafone and Optus should start selling at this price.

    • possibly due to the large number of these that telstra stocked. Samsung should have had it at this price from the start and they would have made a killing

  • Am i screwed i accidently put in the wrong DOB?

    • depends on where u put the wrong DOB. if ur buying outright it doesnt really matter. its only if ur signing up to a plan and credit check that it becomes a problem

  • Outstanding price considering some retailers are still selling them for $500+ i just ordered mine , fingers crossed there is stock left!

The postie will be the most watched individual for the next week or so..

  • may be a rep should confirm if they still have stock left!

  • This tablet seems to be selling like hot cakes…didn't iSteve said 7inch is DOA lol

    • @jackofspade
Well if you sell something at 0% profit margin, it's DOA in a business perspective.

      • Heard of the term "loss leader"?

        • Sorry, I'm no MBA here; but exactly what profitable sales (being unlocked, outright purchase, nil contract) is this leading???

        • @StewBalls

When you buy your half price specials at Coles and Woolies you aren't locked in to buying other profitable products there either. However a lot of buyers obviously do otherwise Coles and Woolies wouldn't continue doing it.

Re this bargain - there's real potential for buyers to sign up to Telstra for data packs/plans. Mine was dispatched today and when it arrives I will be getting a pre-paid data plan (probably 12 months for $150) with Telstra. This time last week I had no plans to do this so Telstra has got business from me by selling the Tab for $299!

        • …I will be getting a pre-paid data plan (probably 12 months for $150) with Telstra. This time last week I had no plans to do this so Telstra has got business from me by selling the Tab for $299!

So what has swayed you to the darkside bean_counter?

Were Telstra offering identical or better data bundles than competitors, or are you simply showing newfound loyalty? I'm not being facetious either, you've got me genuinely curious now!

I certainly know that if I bought one, parochialism based on a single bargain would play little part in future purchases from Telstra. ;)

        • I don't feel obliged to use Telstra because I bought a Galaxy Tab cheap from them. I haven't had Telstra services (landline or fixed line broadband) in my house for probably 15 years. They simply haven't been competitive.

However, I live in regional WA and for me Telstra's NextG mobile coverage kills the opposition. So naturally I have a NextG mobile. I pay more for it but at least I know I will get good coverage in the areas I frequent. Not much use having a cheap mobile plan if you can't use it!!

So venturing into a new product like the Galaxy Tab will get me paying out for more services from Telstra. It's nothing to do with parochialism - rather pragmatism. I want the coverage so I can use it when I want and where I want. Clearly that's not a major issue for all of the people buying the Galaxy Tab from Telstra but based on the postings it is clearly a significant issue for others besides me. Telstra will definitely pick up additional customers (despite their continuing woeful customer service) from this offer.

        • Fair enough, that makes a lot of sense now it's in perspective. You're right, even here in my part of NSW NextG is superior, but Voda & Optus are passable enough that they are viable options for cost-effective data use, even if somewhat patchy! ;)

FWIW, Telstra ain't alone in sub-par mobile customer service, both Voda & Optus are level pegging with them in the quest for ultimate mediocrity! Dunno about the other players like Virgin et.al., now I'm curious about that too! :p

Honestly though, despite the fact that you're absolutely correct, they will pick up some additional sales concomitantly; I still don't see this technically as a loss-leader, so much as dumping of what seems to be a grossly inordinate amount of stock.

I can't believe after being OzBargained well & truly they've still got stock to sell!!! :o

Samsung would be rapt, Telstra's probably single-handedly saved a heap of their senior execs from the Korean version of ritual seppuku; and as you say, reaped some serendipitous rewards themselves! :)

        • I don't necessarily think this deal is a "loss leader" either. I was only commenting on your comment "Well if you sell something at 0% profit margin, it's DOA in a business perspective". This is not necessarily the case if you pick up additional business in the process.

I tend to agree with your view that Telstra are dumping stock. Clearly they had a lot of units for this "sale" to still be ongoing, which supports your assessment.

I don't know whether "dumping stock" will be seen as a positive by Samsung. Think of their other customers who are left holding high cost stock that they will have to probably discount heavily to move.

The real winners here are us - the buyers of these discounted units. Can't wait to get mine and see how it stacks up against my wife's iPhone 4 for usefulness.

          Anyway, good discussion

  • Optus has a warehouse full of these Samsung Tabs, and they don't know what to do with them.

    • Sell them to Telstra so they can re-sell them and then give us all a great deal on data packs!!!

    • That would be awesome if they sold theirs at this price as they would have the 900MHz version.

  • I had a chat with our Samsung rep a few months ago, told him we could sell more if they were 10" and he got pissed off and told me Samsung would never make a 10" Tab & 7" was the perfect size.LOL

    • its called lack of foresight

  • -3

Is this locked to Telstra? How much is delivery? Will this work in rural areas on Optus (if unlocked)?

    • 0/10

      • +1

Thanks orpheus - how does this compare to ipad?

    • +1

      Are you serious?
The TITLE of the deal gives you answers to 2 of your 3 questions!!!!

As for will it work in rural areas… well it won't work anywhere (on 3G) without a Sim of some description in the first place. As this is the 850Mhz model that is basically only of use for Telstra's nextG network the answer is No.
It will work on the 2100 Mhz network that Optus uses but that's not really available outside major metropolitan areas.

      • No I am not serious. Just a cheap dig at those that can't be rooted doing a bit of reading/research to find the answers for themselves. If you look at my previous posts on this bargain you will find I have been more than helpful.

Thanks for your detailed response though raydragon.

        • P.S if your this bored tight bottom, go watch pitch black. Good movie

        • @Fincky, watch it with the commentary on…Vin Diesel is a funny dude! :)

      • TightBottom on 16/04/2011 - 15:26

        WTF - unlocked dude ^^^^^^^^^

        Noob fell for it

Edit: damn I did that search before you posted to search :P

  • Just fyi, i think $299 is not a bad price:)

    http://www.isuppli.com/Teardowns/News/Pages/Samsung-Galaxy-Tab-Carries-$205-Bill-of-Materials-iSuppli-Teardown-Reveals.aspx

    • less than 50% including costs for shipping + "taking care of it", not bad at all :P

    • u must remember that those were the prices 6 months ago. those could have changed. prices in tech usually get cheaper

  • +1

    A great deal, thanks Telstra!
Any chance these will get delivered before Easter? (I'm in Syd.)

    • here's hoping, I'm in Perth, mine is going to the store though and in theory it should be there by Thursday!

      • +1

I hope there is no more surprise OZB post this week like "DSE sells Galaxy Tab for $269", please don't do that :)

        • -2

I lied about that "rumour", Although if they go and do that I will be getting 2 galaxy tabs this week.

  • Just received an email from Telstra saying they've cancelled my order
" Unfortunately we are unable to proceed with your order due to an issue we have identified in our verification process.

We believe there may be a credit risk related to your application. Please contact Telstra Credit Management on 125 111 or visit your local Telstra store for more information..

In accordance with this request, your order has been cancelled and any delivery charges and/or purchase amount you have paid to us will be refunded to the credit card you used when placing the order."

Seriously, Telstra, it's an outright equipment purchase paid by a credit card. My order was processed at 3:40pm Friday afternoon. Not sure if I am the only one.

Edit: and no I don't have any bad credit history with Telstra - home phone and mobile post pay with them and always pay the bills.

Hello - would you mind emailing me at [email protected] with a copy of the rejection email?
      Thanks
      Gerd

      • +2

Hi - sorry posted this from my personal account rather the offical Telstra one :)
        Gerd

        • got the same problem

        • Gerd I've been trying all weekend to get this price matched at Harvey Norman and they won't as it is not UNlocked as you say it is….even numerous Telstra reps at Telstra online store say it's not unlocked…what's with that??

        • OK, we've followed up a few of those "reject" offers. There were a handfull and they should all be fixed now.
          Thanks for your patience.
          Gerd

      • Thanks Gerd. I just did.

Edit: Just saw Musai also reported the same problem…wondering if this is going to be epic.. I did try to get on the phone but after 30 minutes being transfered to different departments, with 5 CSR and still no one would like to work on "online order inquires" and at the end of the call, I was transfered back to the last CSR who transfered me.. I am relying on you now Gerd.
