  • Do Google Play 4k movies do Dolby Vision or Atmos?

    • +1

Not yet, only HDR10 as far as I’m aware, and that’s only on select Samsung TVs and Chromcast Ultra. Apple TV 4K is a good option for Dolby Vision and Atmos but only if you have a decent iTunes film library.

      • Surely NVIDIA Shield does HDR10 too?

        • Yep, looks like there's a bigger range than I thought. Here's the full list from Google's website:

4K Android TV models including Sony Bravia, Nvidia Shield and others
2017 or later Samsung 4K Smart TVs
Chromecast Ultra when connected to a 4K TV. Learn how to stream 4K UHD content with Chromecast Ultra
Download speed of at least 15 megabits per second.

Sadly Nvidia Shield doesn't support HDR on YouTube and hence Google Play Movies which sucks. 4k only no HDR or Atmos for that matter. Apple sadly still rules the roost with its iTunes library having the largest collection of 4K HDR/Dolby Vision with Dolby Atmos sound.

  • Or just get Netflix and watch 4k there. Far more content for far cheaper.

None of these movies are on Netflix.

You'd actually be better off getting Stan for these types of movies.

Blade Runner 2049 looks incredible in 4K with Dolby Vision. It’s $10 on the iTunes store at the moment too if anyone’s interested.

If you purchase on google play store/itunes store does it download to your device or is it streamed content? Im on ADSL and probably will struggle to stream in 4k :(

    • +3

Streamed on both. Need at least a 15mbps connection for 4K with Google, 17mbps with Apple

        Thanks

    • You can choose to download before watching, good for when youre watching on the go or just if you want to watch without stuttering.

On an unrelated note, is 4g reception good in your area? I'm in an area with no nbn and i couldnt get adsl2 as there were no free ports in my exchange. Ended up going with optus 4g mobile broadband, current plans are $80 for 500gb per month with the ac800s modem included. I get 220mbit downstream offpeak and 120mbit downstream during peak, so I havent really bothered to look into nbn in my area. Upside is that since I'm renting, I can take the modem with me rather than pay another setup fee for a new service.

      • I suppose the file size would be huge though downloading it?

Im with optus on my mobile but unfortunately only get below 5mbps at home so I dont expect that a dedicated modem will be much better even though it does show 4g coverage with 3 bars.

        • File size for 4k would be huge.

And it depends on what your device is. Every phone uses a different cat modem. The AC800s modem from optus uses a cat9 modem, it uses 3 simultaneous connections to improve speed.

Your better off paying $5 more to get Blade Runner the final cut

You don’t own anything when it has DRM.

    • It's a spousal relationship. I buy MP3s and books from Google; the former being DRM-free and the latter being DRM-strippable, just in case we get a divorce.

      • How do you get the movies you've purchased off google and strip them of drm? Cus that is one thing that worries me about purchasing content from Google. I still do it. But just prefer to have a backup.

Is it possible to pay the money and NOT get access to both The Emoji Movie and Ghostbusters?

    • Sadly, seems to be each. But funny anyway

    • +1

You can pay me, and I won't supply you with those movies in any form. Deal!

    • Exactly - you don't need 4K to see how crap these movies are!
