  • HOw sealed do you need it to be?
    We've got these:

    https://www.ikea.com/au/en/catalog/products/10255901/

And it's pretty convenient/looks OK but not sealable so if you've got a big dog who likes to explore with their nose then yeah wouldn't be suitable.

plastic rubbish bin is what we've used for years

it's an older version of this

    .

    • You can buy them from the reject shop.. Had to buy a new one for my dog food as got by the line trimmer (by my dad) and put a holde in it

Congrats on the puppy : ) I would suggest you don't buy 15KG of food. The breeder/shelter you are getting him/her from will give you some of what he has been eating. Start him/her off with that and ideally continue with it. If you want to change brands then ease him/her into it.

Anyway I bought a dog food bin from petstock similar to https://www.petstock.com.au/product/dog/store-n-paw-food-sto…

  • All decent pet food will come with packaging that is resealable, so you won't need to get a container. The bags will always tell you to store it in the original bag, as it is air tight.

Going to be using eukanuba puppy food. Been told bag is not resealable.

Eukanuba is top of line ie expensive. But if your dog stopped wanting to eat it you used to be able to take unused bag back and get full refund.

Our dog trainer said dogs on it were bit more crazy. We moved off it and dog seemed ever so slightly less crazy.

        • Been told by a vet and breeder only use premium dog food. Currently on advance but l do not like since dog deaths early this year. Will transfer him to eukanuba over week, as works out cheaper than other premium food and is made by royal canin. Did read some reviews and very confusing either love or hate, but all brands seem to fall in same trap.

  • What puppy? and be aware that not all dry foods are created equal.

    • Boxer. Read lots of reviews and understand not all same. Tried to pick a reasonable one that feel is not too over priced. Hopefully picked right one.

      • Can i ask what you went with?

        • Yep. Choose Eukanuba Puppy Large Breed Dry. As mentioned in my other post in this, have an attractive $50 coupon for first bag. Also manufactured by royal canin. Big in dog organisations (but this might be marketing hype). When rang vet gave me premium brands. Did not mention Eukanuba but when I said this, they said would be ok.

          • @kizashi: Don't want to get into 'this food is better than that food', but those with grains as the second and third ingredient, are not always great for larger dogs.
We have had 3 large dogs that we started off on Eukanuba, but all 3 had some issues. Resolved since.
If it works for your pup, fantastic, but don't get stuck on one brand.
Different stages of life require different nutrients. Do look around for others, if junior isn't taken by your first choice.

            • @oscargamer: No worries. Thanks for advice. Just do not wqnt to keep moving him from brand to brand, as often causes an upset stomach etc. I know l am doimg it now, but very early in pups life. Also thought of making my own fresh and half dry (did this previous dog), but not sure if have time to do it. Vet said first 18mths is most important for premuum food. I take pup to vet monday,so will also raise food again. What do you feed your dogs?

              • @kizashi: SA you say, changing food isn't good if you do it often or too quickly. Take 5 days to change anything. 20% change per day. We now use 50% raw meat and Black Hawk fish and potato for the rest.
Our belief is that fish protein is gentler on the digestion and potatoes better than grains.
Like I said, it works for our weimaraner and greyhound. YMMV
                Enjoy the new family addition.

  • You can get 20L food grade pails from Bunnings that are pretty much air tight. I use them to store my 3D Printer Filament. https://www.bunnings.com.au/handy-pail-20l-white-plastic-pai…

  • I use the following which I find gives a better seal than their 20l buckets:

    https://www.bunnings.com.au/icon-plastics-30l-blue-tint-wide…

I keep it in the garage, so I have a smaller tub from Woolworths in the house - and I find a 15kg bag fills the bigger drum perfectly once I’ve about half filled the smaller container.

  • I just use a 40-50L plastic storage container.

  • I don’t think you mentioned the breed of puppy?

Just be aware that vets and breeders are frequently sponsored by/ receive kickbacks from premium dog food manufacturers.

If you were to reconsider Eukanuba, you could look at Meals For Mutts or Black Hawk as highly recommended alternatives. I recently read of a new one but sorry I can’t recall the name!

Boxer. I keen to try Eukanuba (and are manufactured by Royal Canin). Very hard to tell from reviews as everything I read have had people loving brands or hating them. Just tried to pick large company which feel is a premium brand. Even Black Hawk has bad google reviews, so very confusing.

We feed our dog Wellness core. It's a resealable bag, so I just keep the food in that bag, and store it in the garage. For everyday use I use a plastic cereal container from Ikea to fill my dog's bowl every morning. She's a small breed, so the container lasts a few weeks. When it runs out, I just go to the big bag and refill it

  • I asked on the Blackhawk Facebook page for a free bin and the bags had been splitting (or someone's bag split.. once.. Somewhere..) Anyway, they sent me a free plastic 20kg bin with lid and scoop! Free!

    • Sounds like a good company. Eukanuba have an attractive offer for the first bag that you get $50 off from website. I went into use at Best Friends as they had it on special for $89. Told me that if I used voucher could be from full retail price $136 (which no one else charges) and cost me $86 (or $3 less than special. Very disappointing store. Told them forget it and will take business elsewhere. Went to Petstock and had it priced at $99 but honored voucher, so only cost $49 and much better company ie no argument to get it and very friendly (total opposite Best Friends and highly recomend!)

    • How did you ask them? Just literally Facebook message them asking for the bin?

  • For those asking, I getting a male boxer puppy tomorrow.
