The Balvenie 12 Year Old DoubleWood Whisky $77 @ Dan Murphy's eBay (Pick-up Only)

740
PICKUP10

My last post on Christmas whiskies for presents did well but unfortunately I cbf doing another one. A smaller post was made by user Blue whiskey this year and covers some of the deals to be had, comments give more options.

Since my 2016 post I have tried a lot of whiskies and have been consistently coming back to The Balvenie as my favourite. All the guys at our whisky tasting nights always give it a good wrap and it's approachable by almost anyone. It's usually around the $90 mark so the PICKUP10 code gets it to a good price.

Update: First Choice have it for $74.70; thanks to rize2love and andycandy in the comments.

Other gift ideas:
Glencairn glass $9.90
Denver & Liely glass (rich man's Glencairn) $45
Tasting pack $54 (not a deal but a nice gift with nice whiskies)
Either Dufftowns about $50 (another one of my faves).

If you are buying whisky or paraphernalia for a whisky drinker, my personal opinion is to not get them a decanter and glass set. I have been given 2 sets over the years and barely use one of them. Same with whisky rocks, it's a nice thought but not worth the effort imo. Stick with actual whisky or a glass. As long as you get a single malt and its about 10 years or older, they will not complain. It's always nice getting a bottle from a friend and have them give a bit of a spiel about the backstory as to why they chose it (local, unusual, rare, their fave, recently won an award etc). The only one you have to watch out for is scotch whiskies from the Islay region as they are the smokey ones and not everyone likes them.

Merry xmas everyone.

Good additional comments supporting this deal, and why it is important to justify why a certain scotch is chosen for someone. I think that scotch is one of the most difficult gifts to buy, as they are so different.
If someone gave me one and explained why it was chosen, I would be very appreciative.

I would sell this to someone else, the same way I sell it to myself. The whole Balvenie range is great, with great cask flavourings, Dave Stewart knows his shit. I started drinking them regularly several years ago when all the fanboys jumped on the Japanese stuff and made the price become stupid. The doublewood is a classic, silky, sweet, but not lacking body or kick. Its more than a solid drop at a solid price. Much more inferior whisky's go for 2-3x this price… Its a whisky for people who actually know & like whisky, not just posing about with bottles like they're a status item.

The problem with that approach for me would be

"I got you this scotch because it was a screaming ozbargain"

      • +2

Yep, Na, not acceptable to me either

        • Then you are not acceptable here either/s

    • I'd say its quite smooth and very approachable. It's the sort of scotch you'd pull out for your mates, they'd all talk about what scotch they think is the best, then you look down and realise the bottle is empty and everyone agrees it's a nice drop, buy not as good as <insert their favourite>.

I'd say it's an aftwr dinner scotxh as its quite moorish and you end up having just another wee dram

I'd say it's an aftwr dinner scotxh

        Or during lunch perhaps?

        • My grandparents always had a (hot) dinner at midday. Just following the ancestors :-)

      • I feel like an after dinner mint now

  • Thanks

As much as I have tried to experiment with nth no. of Whiskies, be it single malt or blended, sadly, I have been unsuccessful developing a taste for them. Neat, shot, on the rocks, up, straight up, mixers etc. tried numerous ways. The whisky'ness' and strong alcohol overpowers the flavour for me.

My loyalty to Shiraz has rather become even stronger as a result.

Any tips/ suggestions guys to get going on the Whisky journey?

    • Do other spirirs such as bourbon give you the same feeling?

      • Bourbon, yes, same feeling.
What works in spirits are Tequila, flavoured spirits such as Sambuca, shots pretty much.

Just created a discussions forum post seeking advice WHISKY - Getting used to the Taste, might as well I guess :)

    • What's the cheapest bold Shiraz?

      • +1

Ah, 'cheapest', apologies, can't say much buddy.
I love my Shiraz and spend well on them. I do keep an eye on specials/ deals (haven't paid retail price, ever) and then cellar them.
My favourites to go regulars are Penfolds Bin 2 and Wolf Blass Grey Label.
McLaren Vale and Barossa Valley gel well with me.

Get older. I hated the stuff until I neared 50 years of age, now it is glorious. Go figure.

    • Try mojito or caipirinha?

    • A well-made Old Fashioned would be worth trying.

    • Just try every yesr or so.

But maybr whisky isn't for you.

Have you tried Whiskey (the Irish stuff like Jameson's)? It tends to be a bit smoother. The Jameson caskmates is quite good.

      https://www.danmurphys.com.au/product/DM_947801/jameson-caskā€¦

      • I didn't find Jamesons's to be smoother. I found some Speyside whiskeys really soft (minimal burn).

        • Oh if its the burning, yeah straight spirits probably aren't your thing.

Stick to the Shiraz (is the Wolf Blass Grey that good? I've been umderwhelmed by all Wolf Blass wines I've tried, But I haven't had Grey).

          • @[Deactivated]: Straight vodka is quite decent. A previous commenter liked Wolf Blass Grey. But $30 for a shiraz is too much for me…could get a tall bottle of 10% craft beer for that!

            • +1

@Fobsessive: Try Stolichnaya Elit if you like Belvedere and Grey Goose. Smoothest, sweetest straight vodka I've come across.

              • @Mr BoMBAStiG: $70 is out of my price range :(
                How does Russian Standard compare?

                • +1

@Fobsessive: I really like Russian Standard. I was in St Petersburg ~2005 and asked a barman for the best Russian vodka and he poured Standard. A few years later it was all over Aus shelves and has been marketed as a lower end vodka. It tastes great for me, especially straight from the freezer over ice.

I posted a Russian Standard deal a while ago with similar sentiments and since then it has appeared on the front page many times.

                  • @Mr BoMBAStiG: I remember that deal. Russian Standard hasn't been that cheap in recent years I think, sadly.

    • Same here. I am also loyal to Shiraz. Penfolds and few others from Barossa valley are my favorites.

I have tried a number of whiskeys (ranging from $50 to $150) and almost all of them ended up either with my friends or kitchen sink.

Having said this, when I tried Balvenie, for some strange reason, I loved the aroma, taste, after-taste and overall feel. So bottom line, I am a Shiraz and Balvenie man.

  • Strange, the Glencairn Glass is always $9.90 in my local store.

First choice liquor is cheaper $74.70 ebay with same discount code. Enjoy!

You are faster than me :)

Bought this using the same promotion code with First Choice for $74.70. They are selling at $83 before promo code.

    • I asked the mods to change to this deal as I can't update URL/store myself.

  • IMHO this is a terrible whiskey. I have a bottle and have trouble giving it away.

    • -2

I bought a bottle of a different brand (can't name it here) and after one drink, I poured it down the sink and was done with it.

      • No idea why people pour down the sink.

I would at least share with me not so close friends.

Or at least mix with coke

Happy to take it from ya, i ll pay postage too.

  • Thanks, I'll give it a go.

Got 1 from their competitor thanks. Whisky is very subjective, I prefer to drink anything no less than 12yo due to less burn and more smooth/matured flavours. Belvenie 12yo and Cragganmore 12yo are similar and I like them both. Aberlour 12yo was a steal at $60 before :)

I got 2x bottles with Groupon- boozbud $10 for $50 credit. Cost me $126 including delivery

    • Were you able to stack the "15% off your first order. Use code BESTBUD at checkout. New customers only. Max. discount $30. Terms apply."? If not, I can't work out how to get it down to $126… (assuming including the $10 paid for Groupon voucher). Thanks mate.

      • +1

        Can't stack two codes

        • Thanks mate. Ended up paying $132 net for 2 bottles delivered. Can't wait to try it :) Thanks OP for the recommendation!
