  • Hot with cashback.

  • I can vouch for this one

Helium filled HGST drive (White label WD80EZAZ-11TDBA0)

    • -1

      Does it float?

    • +1

It may not be helium anymore. replaced by an air drive. I don't think there's any evidence to suggest the air drive is a worst drive, although it's likely cheaper to produce.

    • How does this compare to Reds?

      • I believe these ARE reds but are labelled "white" to let people know these have been shucked on the resale market. People were buying them cheaper than reds and reselling. Warranty issues…

      • Same as Reds but with TLER disabled (you can enable it) and 3.3v issue which you can fix very easily

    • +4

Good drives. Worth noting that if people are planning on shucking these (Removing them from their external enclosure) Depending on the computer you chuck them in, they may not power on without a quick modification. See here https://imgur.com/a/BFdmB

      • I didnt know about this, but mine does power off from time to time i thought i got a dud

    • Confirmed I got an EZAZ in August, 256mb cache which is the motherload. Drive performs well shucked into a nas

  • Im wanting to replace my 2TB usb powered HDD on my Mac mini that has all my media. How would this drive be for a Mac mini, that auto sleeps and wakes at set times. Would there be any issues with it reconnecting ?

Do we need to use a power adaptor?

    • +4

It's a "desktop" drive so a power adaptor is required

  • does it come with an aus power plug?

    • not sure about these drives exactly but I recently bought two WD Elements 10TB fom newegg and they only had US power plugs.

I had other 12v 1.5A power adapters with aussie plugs that worked just fine.

    • No it doesn't but officeworks has a US to AU adapter for $5 that I use.

  • Is it better to get something like this or invest in a bunch of Red drives for plain ol' data storage?

    • +3

this is usually the cheapest way to get decent drives. people "shuck" them to get the drives out and then use them as internal drives. the warranty is voided as soon as you shuck them though. the drives used to be WD Reds inside then the companny realised many people were shucking the external drives and so they are now white label reds which have the same specs (usually) as reds without the exact stickers.

      • They also have some of the NAS specific features disabled now on the white labels.

      • +2

Why are they so against people shucking them?

        • +1

They'd prefer if people paid a premium for a red drive.

      • Can i ask why would it be cheaper to buy in the external drive casing rather than just as the drive itself?

        • Check the prices of WD Red, it's much more costlier

        • volume of sales. consumers buy external drives. only people knowledgeable enough to set up a home NAS or build their own PC will buy bare drives.

then when external drives become cheaper even the knowledgeable buyers buy external drives and shuck them. so its a self reinforcing dynamic.

also manufacturers can put whatever drives they have overproduced into external enclosures. for example when you shuck seagate drives you can get either SMR archive drives or barracuda drives.

Been running 3 of these 24/7 for a year, one of them purchased from Amazon. No problems!

Although the Amazon packaging of drives is a little questionable - huge cardboard box and only a little bit of inflatable packaging so would be banging around a bit in transit. Probably going to buy this one though, good deal with cashback!

    • +2

Tempted but put off by the idea of it slamming around in a largely empty box from overseas.
Just goes against my instincts with drives

      • They're made to withstand being thrown about.

Hard drives from 25 years ago could withstand 300G accelerations.

        • I get what you are saying but 'being thrown about' - That's not the first thing I think of as fine or even OK with a desktop drive.
Of course there is more to them that just the drive, There is the enclosure and all the supporting electronics
Lets just say I don't think getting slammed about helps

      • +1

Yeah, it makes me anxious too. But less so knowing I can apply for refund fairly easily through Amazon.

Bhphoto usually have it for around the same price as Amazon.

160USD at the moment + I think usually about 20-30 shipping?

        • Seems to be $250+. Amazon is cheaper

          • @Sopzo: Yes, correct. Think it's still pricematching their regular price, they might update soon if the Amazon price stays there long enough. But this was in response to someone who was nervous about Amazon's packing, BHphoto packs it much better.

Considering that WD 8TB Elements hovers around this price point anyway, this is not a deal.

    https://www.amazon.com.au/Elements-Desktop-Hard-Drive-WDBWLG…
    https://au.camelcamelcamel.com/Elements-Desktop-Hard-Drive-W…

It's best to wait for 15-20% cashback on SB or CR and then buy the elements. You can go under $200

    • Mybooks have way better drives than the elements.

With the prime free shipping +cash rewards I'd consider this a deal.

      • i bought two WD Elements 10TB at the newegg black friday sales. the drives inside are WD100EMAZ drives.

what do the MyBooks have inside?

        • +2

WD100EZAZ. It's basically the same drive

      • +1

No they don't. They have EMAZ which is the same as EZAZ.
Both used to be He but now it's a mix between He and Air

There is literally no difference. This is really not a deal

  • So do these spin at 7200rpm or 5400rpm? Seems to only be 5400rpm

    • It's only 5400rpm but these drives are really good (rpm isn't the only performance deciding factor). They are basically a Red clone just with TLER disabled and the 3.3v issue

    • With the density on these huge drives the rpm doesn't matter as much

      • Many (myself included) prefer 5400rpm. Perfect for tight spaces like a NAS box where most won't need or even notice 7200rpm performance gains but will notice heat gains.

  • +1

FYI the cashback links are both showing 10%, but Cashrewards is now 5% and shopback is 6%.

  • Need a new HDD, I only use them to watch media by plugging the usb into my TV. What's this power plug thing (yes, I'm old). I assume I can just connect it to my TV USB > USB?

  • +1

I should've bought these ones from Amazon instead. My order with Newegg ($3-4 cheaper) 4 weeks ago still hasn't arrived, but previous HDD orders from Amazon US took 10 days or so on average.

    • Shipping timings are the worst thing about newegg

  • 4 of these over USB3, in raid6, hooked up to an old (but still USB-3) laptop as a cheap and quiet NAS.
    Thoughts?

  • All gone now?

I can only find WD elements now for a similar price

    • Don't worry, it's the same drive

  • I'm in process of building a Nas PC and looking around to buy a 8tb hard drive. is it possible to buy this and take it out of the enclosure and use it as a internal drive for media storage?

Would there be any issues with constant read/write when in use? (Watching and downloading Multimedia)

Also how easy is it to take it out the enclosure and connect through a sata port. Thanks in advance

    • +1

Literally 90% of the comments above yours here are about taking this HDD out to put into a NAS.

    Price back to $365…..

Gonna get 2 x 4 tb for $264.02 delivered inc GST

    • Where are you looking this up? I've added the 6b version and it's adding tax and shipping. I thought shipping was free for prime members( us prime member though)

    • +1

Don't! Get the 8tb elements instead, it's basically the same drive

      • I should'nt have any issues shucking them. Sorry for so many questions. Thanks in advance

        • +1

No issues at all. Just do the 3.3v mod

          • @Sopzo: Legend! Bought the Amazon Prime membership and 8TB Elements plus 5% cashback. :)

  • Thanks. Bought one. It's been 9 hours and have not seen the cashrewards tracking. Should I be worried?

    • It says 4 days? I havent used it before myself

  • Elements still in stock….whats the difference?
    https://www.amazon.com.au/Elements-Desktop-Hard-Drive-WDBWLG…

    • Essentially no difference, go for Elements

    • +1

MyBook has an extra circuit board that hardware encrypts everything. If it dies and you pull out the drive you data will not be readable

  • Tempted, but dont want to run the risk of rebuilding a 8tb drive!
Looking at 4 or 6 tb external but most likely they will be WD blue… disappointing.

  • The main technical difference is software. There is also a difference in cost and maximum size.

    MY BOOK
Uses WD Backup software to automatically backup selected file types when added or changed. Prices are a bit higher; for the software. Largest size it 8TB (TeraBytes). This would be good for users without much computer experience. There is a Password feature which provides some security, but if the Password is forgotten, there is no way to recover the files.

    ELEMENTS
Uses standard Windows Copy or Move software for user to select files and where to save them. Prices are lower. Largest size is 4TB. Windows software requires some computer experience.

  • my mouse is hovering over the BUY button. Just not sure if its 100% compatible with MAC sleep/wake. Does the HDD spin down correctly when my MAC sleeps, and does it spin back up and mount when it wakes?
