Yes currently $78.90, and with stock at least in all the stores around my area.

      • Yes that's the one. I should've mentioned that I saw them at $89 back in early November.

      • Can someone provide their reviews on the Bunnings Arlec DC fan? I plan to buy from Bunnings as well but not sure if it is as good as Kogan one.

    • Anyone have any experience with the Arlec? Looks good because I live next to a Bunnings

      • Yes, I am thinking of picking one up from Bunnings too.

      • my experience is for $10 more you wont regret this fan

        • You might need to clarify which is "this one" as recent comments are about the one from Kogan and Bunnings.

The bit where "BilboBargains" said "I will drop in and grab one" gave it away lol.

      • I am also thinking of picking one from bunnings which is quicker.

        • I wanted to get bunnings one too but no feedback from ozbargain community. Now going to buy Kogan one.

    • Thanks I will drop in and grab one

      • Edit - decided to get the Kogan.

    • so that arlec one is comparable?

      • I've seen an assembled one in bunnings and it's build quality is very poor compared to the kogan / kambrook.

        • +2

I wouldn't say the build quality is poor, more average. It's a fairly solid unit with a reasonably heavy base. The front cage is held on with a strap as opposed to clamps and is a pain in the arse to get fitted properly. It runs nice and quiet at low speeds, with no rattles or abnormal noise at any speed.

The display is a horrible mish-mash of fan speed (blue LED number segment), power (bright or dim red icon for off/on), mode (blue icon), and then lights behind each of the buttons (blue LED), which seem to be overkill as the aforementioned icons already tell you if it's on/off etc. In fact the buttons when lit light up the whole casing rather than just the button itself, and looks really cheap. Also, the noise emitter that sounds each time you make a speed change or turning off/on needs smashing with a hammer.

Live in Melbourne, can't justify it for the occasional heatwave. great offer though

    • +1

And sadly, even these fans don't work during summer blackouts, which is what Victorians are being warned about today.

      • +8

If everyone bought one of these instead of blasting a 3kwh+ Air con during killer days there would be no blackouts, infact i dare say we'd lower power prices by a few % and pay for the fan itself.

      • +1

Some of the Xiaomi fans have a rechargeable battery, perfect for blackouts on hot days.

    • occasional? As a brisbaner, melbourne sounds like hell.

      • Depends on what floats your boat (climatewise)

      • Sounds like hell? I've heard it's pretty hot down there…

I must be the only person on the planet who prefers a loud fan at night time. I like my fan drowning out other noises when I am in bed.

Quiet fans are great for the living area though. Just concerned 28w wouldnt be powerful enough to feel in my living room.

How do these compare to high velocity fans? The fan I am looking to replace is a 140w high velocity fan. Hard to imagine these come close yet reviews seem to rate this very highly. Just not sure what that's in comparison to.

    • +1

      140W, man I admire you
I mean if you are man

Thats the one I have which is too noisy for my living room. Ever since getting my first high velocity fan ($15 clearance one from Masters) I have gone for these types of fans. But I was upgrading from $12 kmart fans.

Of I could match (or exceed) the airflow with a quieter fan thst would be great.

    • +1

I like my fan drowning out other noises when I am in bed.

What noises? Like your own wind?

Just concerned 28w wouldnt be powerful enough to feel in my living room.

Unless it's the size of a basketball court it won't be a problem.

    • You're trying to compare input wattage to output across different units, you can't without more information

Between the 28/140w power draw there's a motor and other electronics plus different designed fan blades that move air differently.

Just because the high velocity fan draws 140 watts does not mean it's better than a lower wattage fan.

  • +2

I rigged up a "silent fan" for myself by rigging up 2x2 surplus computer case fans together (120mm Scythe case fans) and hooking them up to a variable voltage 12V DC supply. It obviously doesn't move super amounts of air but enough to move air around on a warm night to be able to sleep while still being pretty quiet (I'm a very light sleeper, unfortunately). I'm surprised at these review comments above about it actually being a lot more quiet than a stock cheapie pedestal fan that it looks exactly like.

Asking seriously here; for those who have quiet case fans like Noctua able to give some feedback on what sort of noise-airflow are we talking with this?
I know bigger fans are more efficient obviously but is there $90 difference?

    • +2

Have you read any of the comments here from the multple people who own one or more of these fans?

      • +2

Clearly not. You can't help some people.

        • +1

          It's painful isn't it!

I'm personally glad for the comments, so many have helped me make decisions I'm happy with.

          • +2

@bm: It's why I love the comments on here and reviews on Amazon as they give you all the information you need to a decision!

      • +1

I have. I also know there are lot of different standards of what people consider quiet. I've bought "quiet" fans, or "quiet" watercooling systems which were anything but.

I know the question is a long shot, but it's a specific comparison - at least there's a benchmark other product to compare against.

I can read thanks … can you?

        • can read thanks … can you?

Why be so rude, these fans are silent and dozens if not hundreds of people have confirmed this.

        • +7

OK, I'm really sorry if I misjudged your genuine question.

If you have one of the junk $10-$20 fans from bunnings, this fan on its lowest setting blows more air than the junk fan, but it's inaudiable.

The junk fan has a 100hz hum since it's an AC induction motor. It's less efficient but when you're only talking 20 watts, it's not the end of the world and it'll take many years to break even.

But at setting 3 or 4 (of 26), it's about as powerful as the junk fan at full speed, and at setting 3, the wind noise only becomes minisculy audible. Speed 1 and 2 are inaudible for me. I can hear the hum of the SMPS in the plasma TV on the wall over the fan.

I don't know how that compares to you since I don't watercool or overclock so hopefully it's useful. Good luck.

          • +3

            @bm: Group hug time!

            Sincere apologies from me too.

        • I have one of these fans, it's absolutely dead silent on only the lowest of the 26 speeds (ie: 1) but still moves a lot more air than two quiet computer fans, speed setting 2 is just audible.

    • Why are you surprised that this fan with an efficient DC motor and blades is quieter than a $10 cheapie? Especially when you were just saying you were using more efficient pc fans with better blades to cool silently!

      • +1

It's usually not the motor (esp just saying it's AC vs DC) but things like the bearings. Similarly if it's only quieter purely because you can adjust the speed that is also not really related to the motor.
To put it another way, what if it's only quieter than most because you can ramp the speed down lower than just 3 pre-set buttons? I'm not knocking the product or price at all, but it does give a good comparison to other fans or set ups like this.

        • +3

I'm sitting in the lounge with the fan on normal 01 (out of 26) and it's great. Plenty of air and I can't hear it with tv on and with the tv muted I can barely hear it. On the lower of the 9 silent settings below they can't be heard in a bedroom at night no matter how hard you try.

The motor is more efficient, the blades are more efficient and it has over 36 speeds.

          • +1

@Maverick-au: heh sounds heaps better than the Dyson AM05 which is still pretty loud at speed #01 :(

  • Thanks OP. This came just at the right time, as I needed to replace two 6 year old Target specials.

Hope they are as good as everyone says!

Would love to see the Xiaomis at this price, would be great in my Mi Home setup.

  • Is this suitable for people renting?

    • +37

      No.

Having one of these fans in a rental is a guaranteed reason for your landlord to evict you.

      • Why?

        • +2

          sarcasm is strong in BM

    • +1

Oh lordy. I must be out of the loop.

    • What answer are you expecting?

      • +1

I understood the sarcasm. I couldn't for the life of me understand what the original question was about. Pretty much likened it to will the landlord evict me if I use a DeLongi toaster. What kind of landlord does this person even have to ask such a question.

        • My reply was for swiggity swag. A landlord making comments about a DeLongi toaster, surely it is their attempt to be funny?

  • I got a $30 off code from a Domino's order yesterday and I thought this would have been great to stack with, until I saw the minimum spend of & 1249. Sheesh!

    • +1

Still trying to figure out what your comment has to do with fans

      • +4

After you finish a Domino's order, often you'll have an option to get coupons/offers for some businesses.

    • Some of those Kogan coupons have a minimum spend. The last one I got was $120 Min spend, maybe check for that?

Just saw your edited comment. Yep, Min spend is a gotcha with those.

    • Hey mate, can you PM me your code if you're not using it so that I can put it to use please? Ta! :)

Info on new fans in this video - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4adAomx_wG4

  • I bought one in August and the screen turns off automatically after a few seconds so I wonder if it’s been updated.

The only problem is that it creaks and grinds as it oscillates so it’s not that quiet.

    • Mine did that too - they replaced it under warranty but it took a few weeks.

  • Just bought x2. Efficiency should be good for hot summer nights off grid. Never understand this this sensitivity to LEDs. I shut my eyes and go to sleep.

  • I have a couple of questions for anyone who has one of these already:
Does it save its settings when powered off? I want to use it with a smart plug so need to it to continue where it left off when the power is restarted to it.
Approximately what size is the base?

    • If you cut the power, it won’t turn back on, it’ll stay in standby.

    • It does not save settings. It always starts at "normal operation" 10 speed. I usually turn it on and then immediately dial it down to "quiet operation" 4 speed.

  • I bought one of those DC fan from Kogan, was quite noisy, the fan blade was thin and doesnt seem fit tight enough as so fair bit noise when it running. Good with people need white noise to sleep.

    • What would you recommend instead? Under $100 if possible

    • That's cause you bought the cheap one :p

  • Bought one last year, good fan.
The only negatives i have are
    - Remote doesn't register too well, have to be pointing directly at it.
    - Every time i turn it back on it starts at the default speed of 10? Not at the last setting used.

  • +2

Bought it based on comments here. I trust you guys

  • -1

    Anyone tried the code "TAKE30"?

  • How does it compare to a vornado?

  • +1

I have two of these fans. I highly recommend it purely based on the silent fan modes alone. You get a very nice breeze going and basically no noise. As others have said, the only downside is the extremely bright blue LCD display however I covered mine with red cellophane tape.

    • +1

bought two a month ago , each costs $100 with the use of vouchers.

can vouch for it. Quality built and quiet.

somehow the blue LCD display doesn't bother me. The display turns on when you adjust the speed through remote control but I don't consistently change the fan speed and the display turns off after few seconds anyway

  • May I ask what’s the difference between this model and the ‘non premium’ one which is sold as $59

    Thanks

OP, OP, OP. I did not need an $89 fan, and have 3 bunnings cheapie fans. Next to useless noisy little bastards they are too. I just bought and paid for an $89 fan that i did not even know existed 2 hours ago! Berjezzers. Thanks stevelo. Excellent fist post Mate

Just grabbed one of these 10% off Kogan giftcards from this deal 10% off Kogan, 10% off Webjet, 15% App Store & iTunes, 15% off Google, 15% off RedBallon @ PayPal Digital Gifts on eBay and the giftcard came through like 5 minutes later. Bought with the giftcard, what a breeze! $11 credit left in the Kogan account, 40GB prepaid SIMs here I come!

Not sure that the fan was really a necessity, but my existing cheapo Kmart one has been starting to become pretty noisy. Guess with all the + votes I had to jump on the bandwagon! OzBargain force too strong, must be a really cool product… Couldn't help myself.

    • +1

Excellent idea. Thanks for sharing mate.
Same thing Not sure if I needed one but cant resist with so many positive votes and comments.

      • Ozbargain FOMO is a thing.

    • 2.5hrs later I'm still waiting for mine :(

      • Got my giftcard. Yours should take long too.

        • Took 4hrs but I got there. This really should be added to the OP IMO

From the User Manual, it seemed that the screen problem has been fixed.

    New manual:

Screen will turn off in 30s if no operation.

    Old manual:

Press the ON/OFF button for three seconds and the screen will turn off, ………

Great! Might get another one then, and consign existing one to the spare room. The over-bright display was the only problem I have with this fan.

    • Youve just doubled my excitement

I have this fan, bought it last summer and also bought similar fan from MYERS (Kambrook 40cm Pedestal Fan with DC Motor: White: KPF849WHT40cm) you'd be mistaken for thinking the more expensive and brand name Kambrook would be a better fan, but it's not, the remote sucks as it requires perfect direction to work and assembly it no where as good as the Kogan (yes I was shocked) now the kids both fight over who gets what fan in thier room as the both prefer the Kogan, just like I do, when it's on sale like this it really is great value, it's so much better quality than those $15 Target,Kmart cheap crap that eventually fall over when the feet bend and fan power is lame. Go the Kogan it's a proven winner, solid, powerful, great remote control response, quality look and you can turn off the annoying lights if you choose.

    • On my Kambrook I don't even need to aim at the remote at the fan and it turns on. Tested facing away from the fan and it still works.

  • +1

Would the high speed setting be considered as powerful as other "high velocity" fans around? That is would it push air well around a large room (open plan kitchen/living room)?
Also, is the high speed setting considered quieter than others as well or is it just the low setting?

Thanks anyone who can help answer!
