My gut feel says this is a good price.. I'm not in the market for such a device though.

  • these sell at BigW for about $350

  • Hmm. We ordered one off COTD a few weeks ago but it shit itself and died (not this model, a beyonwiz)

They said they would send a replacement, but if they didn't have any we'd get a refund. This might do the job anyway.

Just need it for taping purposes, EPG and media streaming from a portable USB, so this looks like it would do the job??

    • ive had just about every brand of PVR them all pretty unreliable and missing basic features, even the top of the line models or they just fail. ALso had a beyonwiz that failed as well and it was the best model. IN the end a PS3 and a Playtv does all I need, it might not record two items at once but its been going for years without fail.

My toppy 5000PVRt Black Panther is awesome.
It's getting a bit old missing out on the HD channels now though.
This is a great price for a great PVR.
I never got into the tap scene & only upgraded firmware recently, so haven't missed that part of it.
There's a quad recorder, hmmmm, might have to look into that.

  • Very good deal. Just bought one to replace my old SD Topfield PVR.

  • Hmmm. tempting, but I would want TAP support as well. I love using my toppy with MyStuff and a few other TAPs running.

    • +4

Pardon my ignorance, but what is TAP? Google not helping me on this one, unless you mean your topset box sprouts water. I'm trying to assess whether this device could suit my future needs.

        http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Topfield_Application_Program

Custom written programs for the Topfield box. I have been using a Topfield PVR for almost 5 years without using any TAPs, but some people find them useful. The $199 Topfield does not support TAPs.

        • +4

          http://www.tapworld.net/

They are custom written "programs" that extend or change the functionality of your PVR. Doing things like adding ad skipping buttons, or increasing the fast forward speed, or different looking program guides, or things like better control timers to scan the EPG for your favourite programs. There is a good chance that newer PVRs don't need TAPs as anything popular has probably been incorporated into the PVR itself.

I use MyStuff as my UI. http://www.tapworld.net/index.php?option=com_content&task=vi…

        • Thanks, Cluster and Sarakoth. I thought it might have been a new codec or something, but customisations I can probably live without.

        • I wish my Beyonwiz had something like this! But no, all I get is millions of buttons and a very confusing interface. :(

Has anyone seen this note about Topfield pricing? Interesting reading.

    • Awesome… I am hanging out for a quad recorder to replace my old SD twin now they I have a HD TV but can't record the few dedicated HD channels.

What the hell is so good on TV that you need to record 4 different shows at the same time?
I can't even think of a single show that's worth recording (that's not more easily downloaded), let alone 2, 3 or 4 that are being broadcast simultaneously!

        • +1

While I agree with what you are saying and find DLing much easier for some shows, the fact is while it can record two shows and view another, you actually have view a channel on the same network ID (or something like that)… also because the TV channels screw around majorily with telecast times, we have to pad the start and ends of shows quite a bit to avoid missing something.. so in fact if you record a single show at say 7.30 - 8.30 and a different show at 8.30 - 9.30 (on a different channel). Therefore at say 8.20 you are actually recording two shows at the same time and then have issues with watching something else. Also in a family with 2 kids and 2 adults, with our own preferred shows, often there can be minor conflicts.

  • Good deal, but no TAPS or IceTV.

  • This bit from the box's manual got me interested:
"Media file formats that you can play back with the digital receiver are as follows:
    • video: DivX, XviD, VOB, MKV, MP4, and AVI"
Especially the MKV bit there. Would anyone be able to confirm whether the box can indeed play H.264 encoded content? And whether it could do this over a network connection from a shared drive or just from a USB drive plugged in locally?

    • Hit and miss apparently…from the Toppy forums:

"I bought a TPR-5000 last week. All is going well EXCEPT

It will not play MKV files, some just don't start, some seem to start momentarily then stop, some start and look great but there is no sound."

"Since my post I read that some other users were also having issues with MKV files so it's entirely possible that the PVR is 'picky'"

"The Topfield supports some, but not others, and it is not expected that they will attempt to turn it into a media player that can play every format available."

  • Does anyone know if you can use ICE TV with this unit as i can't find any info?
Also a link to the manual if you would like some more information.

    http://www.itopfield.com.au/data/download/TPR-5000_Eng_Manual_13Oct2010(0).pdf

    • the item page lists Icetv as not supported

Manual p.68 states 1080I as max resolution not 1080P.

  • can anyone confirm if this has the inputs required to record from Foxtel?

    • Nah no can do : (

    • Hello Racerm911,

This unit only has an antenna input for recording free to air TV not foxtel.

    • Most PVR's dont have the necessary inputs to record from Foxtel but there is a blu-ray/pvr combo player from Panasonic that has inputs for recording Foxtel -

Expect to pay around $650 at JB Hifi.

  • can this record satellite tv? (i've got a satellite dish to some asian channels)

    • +1

      Hi Venu,

No it cant record satellite it can only record free to air

  • Can recorded content from the TV be transferred to a USB disk? If so, what format is video recorded in (.avi, .mpg, etc.)?

    • +1

      Hi Mdippa,

Yes it can, the recordings are done in .MPG and if its recorded to the internal disk then it can be transferred to an external drive after.

  • If someone can confirm if this will definitely play Mkv files I will buy one

  • Unfortunately these have now sold out.

  • Great deal, thanks rep, missed it though. It appears you can still buy it, at $289 with postage. Still a good deal anyway.

  • Just received mine today. It's not actually a "Topfield" product. That name appears nowhere on the box, instructions, or the product itself. Rather it's a "TOPPRO" but looks and acts exactly like a Topfield product. Did Topfield change their name in Australia? Anyway, it works fine and is easy to use.
