Why Do Old Entertainers Need to Keep Going?

Just seen former 1970’s singer Leo Sayer on TV, he is now 70.

He has a gruelling tour planned for next year.

I know surely he doesn't need the money, so why would he put himself thru all that night after night?

Gotta keep that cash comin' …

What else is he gonna do?

      Greet people at Big W?

That link, two sentences in, clearly states "UPDATE: This story is false"

why would he put himself thru all that night after night

    Because he enjoys it.

    /close thread.

Oh those people with their hobbies and what not. How dare they continue doing that?!

      • +5

Just saw someone doing their job. Outrageous!!

    • +5

Yeah. Bob Dylan is 77 and he constantly tours. He certainly doesn't need the money and cares not for the reviews. Instead, he lives to perform.

      • +2

        Yep this.

They simply love their work. Working isn’t always about the money. They love what they do.

He’ll sell out docklands stadium in Melbourne.

Bon Jovi is in Melbourne this week. He doesn’t need the money. There have been a few examples like that.

Bruce Springsteen is another. Did a world tour. Because why the heck not?

Add the Rolling Stones and Fleetwood Mac to those mentioned.
Plenty of others, I'm sure - performing is like a drug.

      • And here I was thinking performing was how they paid for their addictions…:b

  • That site is the Gossip version of The Onion :-)

  • To stay relevant.

    drugs aren't cheap you know

    • Depends who you know…. you know;)

    The Show Must Go On

    • Inside my heart is breaking

      • "The Show Must Go On" is a song co-written by Leo Sayer and David Courtney and first recorded by Sayer. It was released in the United Kingdom in 1973, becoming Sayer's first hit record

It uses a circus theme as a metaphor for dealing with the difficulties and wrong choices of life

The lyrics you are quoting is from a Queen song.

        • The internet knows the lyrics to Queen songs, not this Leo Sayo chap.

  • Probably does need the the money

have you been on a stage? do you know the thrill? Performing is addictive - the adulation of 100s of fans, hanging on your word.

    • +1

How bizarre. I HATE drawing attention to myself.

  • +1

The adoration is addictive? Getting paid a bonus.

It's pretty common knowledge now that the main way for most musical acts to make money is by touring. People don't buy whole albums anymore, they cherry pick, or steal. You can't steal a concert ticket.

    Coke is an expensive hobby.

ohh well, even backstreet boys came back as backstreet granddads

just need nsync and westlife to comeback , and it's 90s again

    • Don't forget S club 7 and Vengaboys.

  • I know surely he doesn't need the money,

There's no such thing as "enough money". When your income grows, so do your expenses.

    It's all relative…

  • If they've still got it, why not.

Interesting to see the likes of All Saints, Steve Perry, back street boys, et al, older and with some decent stuff.

He probably gets to shag lots of groupies.

    • probably definitely , they would be there and available, if that's what he feels like doing

  • Entrepreneurial business men convince them to tour. And profit big time off them.

    Had to laugh
Chad Morgan (The Sheik of Scrubby Creek) Is still touring

I don't know about Leo, he's had his ups and downs. Perhaps he does need the money, perhaps he doesn't.
Generally though, it's for the sheer joy of it.
The Rolling Stones are a great example, Keith Richards has horrendous arthritis in his hands, he's in constant pain when playing. His guitars are restrung to suit the very limited movement he has left and he changes guitars many times during a show, sometimes during a song.
Yet, through all this and considering he's an extraordinarily rich man, he's still on stage regularly.
Check the tour schedules, it's amazing.

  • Why does it matter to you dear OP?

    Surely thats up to Leo.

If you like his music then go along.
If not then dont bother with this.

And why does it matter to you why it matters to me?

For all those writing: "doesn't need the money"

    How do they know that?
May have incredible debts to maintain all those visible assets …
    May have family/friends/relatives to maintain.

Are they doing it for free?
    NOPE

    It is the money then.

  • when you get older and have virtually not much to do or look forward to and you only see death in your future you may just realize how ridiculous your question is

  • Probably still needs the money.
Besides, why not? Everyone needs a purpose in life.
I love when older entertainers remain active. Why not?
If they can't perform well anymore then the tickets won't sell.
    Their age makes no difference.

  • They love what they're doing. Not always about the money.

  • As a personal friend of the Beach Boys and yes free tickets, back stage passes mixing with them in the green room with food and drinks I have asked them the same question face to face at a concert in OZ a few years ago. Two of them are in their 70s and still amazingly fit as. They do over 200 concerts a year.

Answer: we love touring and what else would we do?

  • It is not always about money most of the people work for self-satisfaction. They love their job as I love to do the magic show and I will also continue to perform to that age.

  • Alice cooper is 71 and he's touring Australia next year and I'm glad he is as I'm going to the Adelaide concert and taking my son to his first concert

And when Iron maiden tour again I'll also be going along with my son
