    If only they'd gone 32GB…

      Has an SD card slot

    • +1

I'm with you. Our old 16GB Note 10.1 is constantly reporting near full memory, and I'm regularly having to move apps to the SD Card. It's never been an issue on our 32GB devices.

  • No software update is also a problem.

    • What are you missing for the newer android platforms? On a tablet, not much.

Not many android tablets (apart from Samsung and the old Pixel C) really continued update the OS anyway.

      • +3

As a Samsung tablet owner stuck on 4.1 i beg to differ. Terrible support. Cant even install new versions of some apps.

      • No security patch is a concern. That is reason I brought iPad instead which is just over $400 when it is on sale.

$299 is also the standard price at Officeworks at the moment.

    • I think that is a lower spec model

      • +2

Actually I think it might be out of stock at officeworks. Same model tho.

        • Sorry same model but yes out of stock

  • Also at $100 more, this could be the better by for those that want a faster CPU and 4x the onboard storage:

    https://www.jbhifi.com.au/computers-tablets/tablets/lenovo/l…

Extra 1gb of ram too (4gb)

    • $100 more is $100 less in your pocket

      • True.

Bummer with both these tablets is they don't play HD Netflix out of the box and you have to used a hacked apk to get them to work.

Otherwise I'd pull the trigger. I've been keen on the tab 4 plus for a long time now.

    • The sd450 in the p10 (8x a53 at 1.8ghz) is not faster than the sd625 in the tab 4 plus (8x a53 at 2.0ghz). They are however close enough that you won't notice it.

      • +1

True. sd450 is a newer processor but still 11% slower than a sd625 apparently.

Is this a good replacement for 2013 nexus 7?

    • It is if you want a 10"tablet.

  • Any tablet you can use as a phone?

    • +3

      Don't..

      • For my parents, it's bigger than a phone and they are not tech savvy (don't even know how to tether)

        • +5

Yes 10 inch tablets fit perfectly in the elderly hand to use as a telephone

        • +1

Maybe the xiaomi tablets are your best bet here.

    • Sounds like you want a tablet with LTE for data access. Check the mobile phone operators for tablets they sell with data plans. You can source these from overseas, but need to be careful with which bands are supported.

The alternative is a 4G Modem. Tablet can connect to wifi at home and 4G modem when they are out. It also enables multiple people to connect.

Lenovo are a nightmare to deal with. Avoid at all cost. Bought their 8 inch Tab through ebay and waited months for delivery. All the excuses. Tracking said it was sent from their depot and then it magically went out of stock whilst in transit. Not good enough! Bought a Samsung one instead.

    • Yeah I've read a lot of Lenovo support transcripts and they just so hopeless and dis-interested.

How does this compare with the Yoga Book for the same price? 4GB RAM and 64 GB storage. Only Android 6, Atom processor. Different form factor, but if you were mostly using it as a tablet…

    • Looks pretty good hey? Android 6 though, you just know that it's gonna give you problems with recent apps at some point.

      • You can also load Windows onto it, if you're really keen…
Might be a viable option for some. We have a similarly specced Kangaroo Desktop mini-pc attached to a TV, it has been chugging along happily for years running Windows 10 (mostly used for Kodi).
If you don't load too much onto it (or run too many browser tabs at once) Windows isn't too bad.

      • there is update to 7 but probably stuck at 7 forever

    • Holy cow. This deserves a post of its own. And 4% cashback at Lenovo too. A gen 1 Lenovo Yoga Book for $299 is a great deal. I can't justify it at present, but I'd considered buying this when it came out, at AUD$700.

    • The Yoga Book looks great, but I'd be worried about the ergonomics of the 'keyboard'. Reviews suggests it's not great for those who type a lot. Very very cool design and idea tho.

A newer version has a combined tablet screen and e-ink reader:

      • The other reviews actually said keyboard is good. so…

$239.20 with PRIZER discount on at the moment from Lenovo eBay

      • OOS, missed it. :(

      • Gah, I missed it too. I was so close to buying for $299 last night, but didn't. I would have JUMPED at it for $239!

  • This is the only model in the Tab4 line not to get Oreo. Otherwise it's a reasonable performer, the latest 7.1 update fixed the 2.4GHz wifi issues.

  • Anyone have any thoughts on how the Tab 4 10 Plus compares with the newer M10, which is RRP $349, but $299 @ JB (and possibly elsewhere) at time of posting?

    https://www.jbhifi.com.au/computers-tablets/tablets/lenovo/l…

Running OREO and 32GB memory, but specs seem pretty similar:

    10.1" Full HD (1280 x 800) Display

    Qualcomm® Snapdragon™ 450 Octa-Core Processor

    3GB RAM

32GB SSD Storage (Expandable up to 256GB via optional microSD)

5 MP Rear Camera/2MP Front Camera

    802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi + Bluetooth v4.2

    • +1

      10.1" Full HD (1280 x 800) Display
That is not full hd thou….

      • Oh good pick up. I just cut and paste the specs from the JB website.

    • +2

APQ8053 is Snapdragon 624, which is a somewhat better SoC than the Snapdragon 450.

Along with the better screen, I'd say the Tab 4 Plus is the better buy.

      • Thanks! I do wish it were as simple as newer = better, but it doesn't seem to be the case with these new models.

Would it be safe to assume that performance difference between the two would be pretty modest if it was just used as a browsing, youtube, google docs device?

I'm actually veering more towards an 8" size tablet - but was curious about the differences of these 2 10"-ers.

        • Honestly the two chips are much more similar than they are different - the 624 can drive slightly high resolution displays and has marginally more memory bandwidth.

I think any advantage the 624 has would basically be spent on driving the higher resolution display. Now, I reckon that display is worth having, but yeah, side-by-side the performance would feel very similar.

          • @ReverseBias: Thanks again, good to know. I'm personally trying to balance what I want re: screen size v weight, so the tech side of it is a secondary consideration.

But you've motivated me to go and try and see if I compare the screens side by side somewhere.
