    I take it that rooting = getting "root" permission = getting administrator access

    What the benefits of rooting?

      You get full control over the system (e.g overclocking the CPU to get faster performance or underclocking it to conserve power),
      move applications to SD card to save internal memory
      ability to use custom ROMS,
      ability to backup the phone entirely (e.g can use Titanium Backup to "image" the phone)
      remove apps you don't need
      install apps that won't normally work on an un-rooted Android phone

      AVG antivirus app on my phone told me that a rooted phone (with Administrator-level access) can be more easily damaged by viruses… Don't know much about viruses on android phones so I can't verify what the real risk is here.
