Seagate Expansion Portable 1TB Hard Drive $79 @ JB

1040

Cheapest 1TB 2.5" external drive I've seen so far. From page 17 of the JB Hi-Fi printed catalog that was delivered last week, dated 23 March (surprised no one else spotted it already). At first, the price made me think I was looking at a 3.5" model, but the product title, image and code match this:

http://www.jbhifi.com.au/computers/storage/seagate/expansion…

Unfortunately you don't get USB 3.0 for this price. On the upside, it doesn't have a non-removable VCD like some WD models, so it can be partitioned cleanly.

Apologies for posting this deal at the worst time of day - just before the stores are about to close :D

UPDATE: see JLsBB's post below indicating this is a misprint, and OwneddMuch's post showing a JB receipt that indicates some stores may still sell at this price. Good luck to those who'll be making a late pilgrimage to Officeworks :)

    • For a 2.5" drive?

      • +7

This is why it wasn't spotted sooner. I'm sure people saw it but lept to the same assumption that it was the 3.5", without looking closer.

        • +1

          Yep, good pickup.

    • this is portable 2.5" version so yes, it is cheap, although still $139 on the website

      • so online it shows 139 but in the shop they'll go for 79? i'm in WA btw, any difference? thanks!!

    • Show us where else u can get 2.5" 1tb at this price?

    • -5

      durrrr

  • Does anyone know if this has a SATA interface on the bare drive if I rip it open? I know it will be 12.5mm high I can live with that, I'm more interested in running it SATA.

    • It is on the 3.5". Don't know about 2.5".

      • apparently many if not all branded 2.5" 1tb drives will have the usb connector fused in (no sata)

    • IIRC, only the short drives are not SATA. Also, this is an old model, so it probably is a SATA interface.

  • Don't think they make ide at these capacity. Very good price
    I paid 127 bout 4-5months ago.

    • I think stumo meant run it off the sata interface with the computer instead of having it run through usb

  • Good price. I'll have to pick one of these up.

  • By far the cheapest 1TB 2.5" Ive seen advertised

  • The USB Port is fixed on the hard Drive itself, in other words, it no longer has sata interface inside.

  • nevermind, please delete

JB Hifi has corrected their error (not sure when though). Check out the following link: http://www.jbhifi.com.au/corrections/

Bugger, price match at Officworks ??

      • best bet to try
        bring in catalogue

        • Don't worry, they have got JB catalogue opened to that exact page stuck onto the wall at OW.

Pretty surprised to see that when I went in to price match.

FYI, there is at least another 10 units at Chadstone, and they are open till midnight. Get it before they change their minds.

        • Anybody have any luck at OW?

        • Just went to OW in South Melbourne. They looked up price online and to see $139 and refused to match to $79.

    • D'oh!

    • +1

      lol damn

    • Nice spot :-/

Looks like we may be too late to the party on this one, though I just googled and the only other reference to this deal I can find is a small thread on Whirlpool, in which someone says they called the Knox store and was told it wasn't a misprint.

Congrats to those who snuck in and got one before the error was noticed. Hopefully there's still a chance for some.

      • That would be me, posted the receipt for you guys. Look down.

  • Is it USB powered?

    • yeah
      no ac required

  • Damn.

However, WTH is this about hdd's having an internal USB connection for data transfer and not having internal sata connection? Since when did that happen? I always thought the HDD was sata connection as standard, and it was the caddy that included a sata<->usb adaptor). I was about to buy a portable 2.5" drive and dismantle it purely because it's really the only way to get a 1tb drive for my ps3. Buying 2.5" drives standalone doesn't seem to happen, according to staticice.

(comments on ps3's not fitting 12.5mm drives not required, I'm using one of these http://www.dealextreme.com/p/sata-7-15p-data-power-extension… )

    • Just use a 3.5" HDD ?

      • I was under the impression that voltage supplied for 2.5" and 3.5" is different 5V vs 12V. I'm sure it can be done with an external power brick, I'm trying to avoid going that route.

    • Native USB hdds have been around for a while now. I think Samsung was the first one to do it around two years ago. These drives are specific for externals and the native USB interface reduces the bulk and manufacturing costs. They even should most of the SMART function as well.

  • I had to go dig out the JB catalogue from the recycling bin (courtesy of Mrs. mediumsliced) to check it out. Nice spot!

    • Lol, did the exact same thing.

      • What Mrs. mediumsliced also threw out your catalog? :)

  • Does anyone remember the 2Tb HDD that Harvey Norman had for $99 few weeks back? http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/36904
Was that a Desktop one & USB powered? Just comparing that one to the 2Tb one in the JB catalogue.

    • +1

that was a 3.5 desktop, AC adapter powered

    • the usb powered one was 1tb @ $99

    • Just wondering, how much is the 2Tb HDD in the JB catalogue and which brand? Thanks

  • Managed to get one of these yesterday. Guy at JB said the usual price was $99, and it wasn't a mistake. On the box there is a $99 pricetag as well, really odd.

I'll try to post a picture of the receipt if I can get it.

      • oh nice, pricematch-able

        Bah,
        Here it is again:
        http://img715.imageshack.us/img715/662/img201103281901052.jp…
(For when there other link stops working)

        • Doesn't say it's 1 TB though. OW can say it was the price for the 500GB?

        • Take a look on the catalogue notice board that OW has got, see if the JB's catalogue is there.

Chadstone had the catalogue open at that specific page pinned on the board.

      • Hey can someone tell me if these price-match dockets work interstate? It seems like the majority of these posters are from VIC, and I've always wanted to know whether stores generally accept them in, say, NSW.

        • just go to your local JBHIFI and get the catalogue, they should have it

        • Oh sorry I meant if it's possible to price-match interstate receipts.

          Apologies for the confusion >.<

    • Are you sure you didn't pick up the 3.5" model?

      • +1

It's got the SKU on it, you could try using that somehow? I think the 1 dignifies the 1tb, but it's not very helpful, sorry.

And yes, I'm quite certain. :P I looked over it as a 3.5" drive too, but I assure your it's 2.5"

  • dammit…i am sure officeworks will realise the very soon if not already…i would really get the drive for the bargain tho i dont quite need it. still have 350gb on my external.

  • Pity they've changed the price. Definitely the cheapest 1Tb portable HDD that's been advertised. I'm sure 1Tb drives will drop in price again. I'm personally waiting for the 1.5TB and 2Tb ones… already got a 1Tb drive which I don't have anything on at the moment so don't need this one.

  • Surely they must honour it if it's in the catalogue.

  • Anyone know what the hard drive model is inside? So we know how fast it is, if installed inside a laptop.

    • +1

      Most likely 5400RPM.
And it'll be 12.5mm thick too, normal ones are 9mm thick (or was it 9.5mm?) so yeah, doubt these can fit inside a lot of laptops.

      • No good then :(

  • 56485 SEAGATE 17 Expansion 1TB Portable Hard Drive ($147.00) Price Correction $79.00 $139.00

    late again :(

    • So, JB have change the price in their system? Am I right?
If we show them the "cataloger", will they still make the deal?

      Thanks.

  • Anyone "Success" in getting price match with officework?

    • +5

Gonna try in the morning @ 8am so OW can't call JB :)

    • Officeworks Geelong priced matched with 5% discount

  • Can someone with the catalogue please scan the whole page?

  • just bought three by price matching at Office Works morley galleria, ended up being $75 as they also beat it by 5% :D

    • so it does work in WA,muahah, gonna head to the one in Vic park tmrw =)..which pic did u use?the catalogue or the receipt?

      • I Used catalogue. Some poor guy was ahead of me in the queue bought one of these, and I thought he knew about the jb error. I didn't hear him saying anything about pricematching so I assumed he paid full price for it. Lol

        • failed to use the catalogue!!! THEM OW PEOPLE KNOW ABOUT OUR MASTERPLANS!!!! =(

    • So were these internal sata or usb?

Get me one if its sata. I can't make it, it'll be too late by thurs night :(

    • Hey can u post receipt so we got one for WA? Gonna go get one this weekend.

    • Went to OW, HN's & DSE over the wknd, none would price match… words out & they're on to us…

      wow nice

people should have no problems now

    • +3

      Absolute legend.

  • $75. -beep-ing sweet.

  • I just phoned officeworks in Sydney, and they said that when you come in to do a price match they have to phone JB Hi Fi to check stock. I assume that aas long as JB Hi Fi have stock then I would assume that OW would be able to do the price match immediately.

However, not sure though if a JB Hi Fi staff member mentions the price correction over the phone, if the OW staff member will be able to do the price match - anyone got a work around for this issue?

anyone got a work around for this issue?

      http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/41877#comment-423374

Gonna try in the morning @ 8am so OW can't call JB :)

      • I've had OW refuse a price match when they can't call the competition to check stock. By all means, give it a shot but I wouldn't have too much faith.

    • What do you mean by "work around"? A way to scam them into price matching against an incorrect price?

  • Bought one at MSY when on sale at xmas time for $99. That corrected price is not cheap at all. Good drive so far though!

  • anybody have a receipt from Brisbane?
