Lowering language barriers for US Troops in Afghanistan
If you’ve ever been a "foreigner” in a non-English speaking country, you understand the value of communicating in the native tongue. As our troops continue to bravely serve overseas, they require the tools to break down language barriers.

Operation Speak Easy launched in order to gives the troops the resources to "lower the language barrier" that currently exists in Afghanistan.

The USO, in partnership with The Boston Foundation, Playaway® and Pimsleur® Language Programs, developed audio-based language training courses in Pashto and Dari, the key languages spoken in Afghanistan.

Operation Speak Easy features FREE DOWNLOAD of the Pimsleur Pashto and Pimsleur Dari courses via the USO website and includes the distribution of over 4,000 Playaway audio players in each language to U.S. Troops, both those about to be deployed and those already on the ground in Afghanistan. Playaway audio players are preloaded and completely portable.

It would be nice if they gave out a French course.
    Rather learn that then Afghani.

Isn't this link meant for those who are serving in Afghanistan?

    • +1

      Yes it is.

On both the Pashto Course & Dari Course pages it states very clearly : (@ the bottom)

"The downloads offered on this site are for the exclusive use of active members of the US armed forces."

      • +1

Yes, please change the description to include the above. It is clear the offer is not intended to be for "any one from any nation to any age".

        • I suppose you did not download this course. Anyways ill leave the final option to mod to decide to delete or keep this post.

    • -4

      yea
However the link are not password or server protected.
so basicly they have made it online free for anyone and everyone that visits the site.
So nothing restricting people from downloading.

      • No I didn't download this.
Just because they did not password protect it does not mean its free.

        • I already contacted them I will post you their confirmation once I have a reply, then it will be finalized.

    • Ah yer, I guess thats true.
Good for people serving in Afghanistan.

Nice find OP. Maybe someday they will provide free weapons training. :P

  • Whilst it is nice and free I don't think we should be taking from the Armed Forces who actually need this stuff!

    • +2

You aren't taking anything from them. As stated, they have made this freely available. It is still there for those who need it. So you aren't denying the person anything by downloading it, especially since this isn't a commercial publication/product.

Your statement insinuates people are depleting a set quantity.
I saw nothing there stating it was limited to "X" number of downloads, so while your concern is admirable, it is also unwarranted.

      • Except that the files are hosted on the USO site, so you're using their bandwidth, which presumably costs them money.

        • Doesn't US Gov have a lot of money?

        • Hey Xanthorrhoea,
          I don't get a reply button under your post…?

          Anyway:
"The United Service Organizations Inc. (USO) is a private, nonprofit organization that provides morale and recreational services to members of the U.S. military…"

It isn't part of the government.

        • To stylecrime:

Okay, I didn't know that. From the title I thought it was related. Anyway, thanks for pointing out. :)
