Konka 55" OLED Smart 4K HDR TV $1,499 + Delivery @ Dick Smith/Kogan

00

Hmm,

I've been keeping an open eye on OLED since i witnessed the PURE GLORY of an LG panel about a year ago - still not going to buy this as they want $150 shipping to Hobart metro … sure…

I'd guess its the real deal, as OLED is only made in 55 and 65" as far as I'm aware. So it must come from the same plant making the LG and Panasonic panels - possibly Innolux… who knows …

BTW, as a purist, QLED is not OLED. LG holds the OLED patent.

Still a wild guess as to how it performs, though its got a quad core + android smart functionality even comes with an "air mouse" remote ….

The user manual paints a woeful picture of actual tv usage, the UI looks like garbage and might not play many formats off of USB …

For me, if this was in a bricks and mortar shop and I could take it back physically for a replacement then i'd bang. not if I had to pay huge return shipping costs etc.
Its a good sign for the future, but i'd simply not bang with that in mind and that ridiculous postage price. its not 15 years ago when $150 shipping may have sounded within the bounds of reason. NOT now, a clear attempt to jack the price.

For those that like OLED —— well… this is cheap.

  • Price in title please

  • An OLED should have infinite contrast ratio

Is this really OLED? I love the move by LG in to the cheaper end of the market if so.

    • Not an LG panel.

  • +2

How do you read the reviews. This only get 3 out of 5 by 11 reviewers. That's the worst you'll see for such an expensive tv

  • +3

Brightness: 300cd/m² and it does HDR? Maybe the spec sheet is poorly written but I'm curious if it's actually doing HDR at all?

  • +6

Why would you spend so much on a 2nd rate brand?
    Makes no sense to me.

    • Says it switches off after 4 hrs and shouldn't be switched on again straight away … I don't think I like the sound of that. …… to protect the fragile OLED's haha

    • Wtf its got a keyboard on the back of the remote … nice

  • +4

Wait to boxing day specials and buy a branded OLED such a risk at this price compared to $1699 for the LG model last year.

    • +5

OLED such a risk at this price

I'll probably be negged, but I don't care.

I consider OLED currently to be risky at any price because of image retention and would never buy one until the tech matures.

      • +1

Yeah but at least the big companies will look after you if that happens ?

True, but I’ve got an early Gen Pioneer Plasma in another house that is still going strong probably over 10 years later. It was an $8k TV back in the day (50 inch, 720p) plus another $1k for the set top box and it ran the risk of burn in. It’s never retained an image and it still looks great, the colours are still better than any TV I own including last gen Panasonic Plasmas, and latest Gen 4K HDR TVs. Only OLEDs look better (apart from the res, you do notice that).

        • We still have a Samsung 55"? Plasma, makes lots of heat and burns kW but still rocking on, had to buy a HD converter for it, super heavy too, gives you a idea how old it must be

      • I don’t know why you would/should get negged, PIR on OLED in certain conditions is unavoidable.

      • I've got an LG oled55b6t and according to the tv I have used it for 2518 hours. Image retention does happen, not gonna lie. Even after short exposure to some images, sometimes as short as a few minutes, but it's only really noticeable if you're looking for it. Haven't had any permanent burn in and coliurs are still as crisp and strong as when I first bought it. I do a lot of ps4 gaming and haven't had any issues with game HUDs burning in

  • 90% this panel isn't from LG and is from some Chinese company I can't remember the name of atm.

    • Rank Arena, PYE, or HMV? :-)

    • Panel is by Chinese company BOE.

  • +1

If the screen was made by LG you can rest assured that Kogan would milk that fact, so i would say its not

  • +2

Not sure who makes the panel but I wouldn't bother with it. The peak brightness is garbage and it would only be tolerable in a darkened room.

Besides, spend 300 more and get an LG B8.

    • This.

Hisense have an OLED out @ 55” but they want $2.7K for it?! Yeah, nah.

      • hahah Hisense trying to play with the big boys lol, Would rather the Sony at that price point

        • +1

Oh for sure. 100% Sony @ that price. Hisense, you’re dreamin’.

        • Why would you want a Sony? Sony is using last years technology this yea so the Panasonic and LG tvs are both cheaper and better tvs.

          • +1

@C0mbat: Woah settle mate we didnt say we were going to buy them haha

      • +2

But as it's Hisense it'll come down dramatically in price. My money's on the Hisense OLEDs being an Ozbargain favourite in the next 6 months.

The value proposition isn't there versus a B7/C7 or C8, and I was honestly expecting these to start dropping significantly in price.

A 55" C8 will be priced near to $1700 in the coming months, and it is a far superior unit.

The question is do you bang?

I remember when I was a teenager my parents brought a Konka as our first flat screen TV. It was pretty big for its time and they raved about how cheap it was. That thing lasted years and years, never had an issue with it. Would I buy one now? I'm not sure. It's still a good price for an OLED but the specs aren't great. As others are saying, you should be able to get a good deal with Black Friday/Cyber Monday on a C8 or TH55. They've been at the 2k mark before and would be a much better unit.

  • You would be nuts to get this.

  • Wait for boxing day…oled55b8s are coming.. i think black friday the panasonic oleds will go cheap too

  • I would be very cautious purchasing from this lot. I just bought the 58' smarter TV about 8 weeks ago, tv out of the box loooked amazing. This all ended when I realised pretty quick with the Xbox one X that it did NOT have HDR, well it does but it has a very basic version. I tried to get a refund based on this as nothing was in advert about being incompatible for HDR gaming and guess what, I presume they had 100's of complaints (well I know this as I can see them all over forums) and now there is a disclaimer int here they now claim was there from day 1 - it was not, I looked over this TV's specs for days and nothing mentioning basic HDR was in the ad, nothing about it not having HDR 10 (which a technician in helpdesk had me believe for weeks there was but we just need to flash the TV, this went on for weeks).
Now Kogan point blank refuse to refund me base on the grounds that the TV was sold under false description but It does look like I am getting a refund based on the TV being an absolute crock

Netflix built in works about 20% of the tinme
Chrome cast built in has never worked
My dtv channels frequently go missing
HDMI produces a lag on sound on HDMI 2
Screen regularly crops aand zooms in to an image that is unwatchable
Navigating the screen is clunky and slow
TV now turns on and off when it feels like and my soundbar and a friends do not work on it as the HDMI doesnt control sound like it says and optical will not work plus on my TV there is no 3.5mm for sound

All in Kogan have been woeful from Day one on this. There support is in ontario canada so lag between emails in incredibly long, they do not have a number to call and it took about 7 weeks of pummeling them with emails to get a call back and not even satisfied with that. They had me record and send HD videos of all my issues to a dropbox then share but now they still want technicians to come onsite at my home to ensure it doesnt work, then it goes back to kogan for 14 business days to asses ann already effectvely assessed TV and I am hoping for refund but if im honest I doubt it based on their level of support thus far.I'll prob get store credit that i will 100% sell for like 20% off just to avoid using this lot ever again

Long story short - stay away

    • Sharing your story here makes me very grateful - THANK YOU!

I will never touch kogan / dick smith crap ever.

I had a good/ok experience with a BIG W 4k JVC 48" tv which was nice, for the 360 price about 18 mths ago but had screen banding and the UI interface was complete garbage.
