How is cheap mdf environmentally preferred when it warps, the veneer comes off, and it ends up in the waste system within a few years?

What has become annoying in recent years is sellers who have NO CLUE about what they are selling trying to jump on the eco bandwagon and call their product eco friendly to drum up sales even though the product is not eco friendly. Just drop the claim about being environmentally friendly is what we're saying. Hell, people can buy MDF by choice for all I care.. that's totally fine. It's cheap and it's good enough, I get that.

Anyway, your claim is outright BS based on at least two arguments:

        1. Chemicals. Formaldehyde! In both particleboard and melamine resin. Go do some research.
        2. Longevity. This is what jesseboy89 was saying. Cheap furniture does not last. I am not saying that your product is 'uselessly cheap' perhaps its better than other similar products… not that you can tell, with no photos of the joints, backing, statements on MDF thickness. Your images can't even decide whether it's medium or high density particleboard nor what its supposed to be stronger than. Regardless it certainly won't outlast solid wood.. I can tell you the last time I engineered a timber bridge refurbishment I did not find a strength grade for MDF in the Australian Standard!

How about we go look at a document produced by the Australian government?

        www.fwpa.com.au/images/marketaccess/PN03.2103 furniture review WEB.pdf

        Key Results
The major results of the study were:
        • Timber from sustainable forestry practices is a renewable resource whereas the production of plastics and metals is not.
        • The use of other materials in the production of timber furniture (such as metal and plastic trimming, glues, varnishes etc) drastically increases the environmental burden of the furniture.

If someone wants eco friendly, get solid wood from a sustainable resource (yes it WILL cost you) and don't coat or varnish it. Probably not a very tempting option. Or hit up gumtree and save a (probably non eco-friendly) bit of furniture from going to the tip (easy, and there's great stuff on there).

        • Man im always surprised at the time people waste lol

Seller lesson. Just sell the product for what it is, no need to try put fancy spins on things. All deals can be ripped apart so dont give the Ozbargainers a chance to.

          • @worthy1: Yeah I lost my voice and had nothing left to do at work until I got it back :p

  • Needed a set of these a few months ago and ended up going with a set of IKEA Malm drawers. Very happy with those although these look nice to for the price.

  • I wonder if when you open all the drawers like in the picture the whole unit tips over on top of you?

    • if you had a look at the link you would see it has safety fittings on the back.
