Not a good price. Was $440 not long ago

Was also $440 today on their website

  • My 780ti jus died, is this a good buy or should I wait for a gtx 1070ti? Running 1080 but will upgrade to a 1440p

    • +1

This will easily do 1440p, I have one myself.

I'd go the Vega due to availability of freesync monitors (much cheaper than g-sync), as well as value (1070ti is still what, 550-600+?).

      • How loud is the cooler on this btw and how hot does it get?

        • Sorry, what was that? Standing next to my Vega 56!

I don't find it that bad and I have a reference / blower style one. I do undervolt though.

          • @FabMan: What undervolts have you pulled and for what clock speeds? Also what fan speed or is it at the default 2200?

            • @Ostrk: State 6 is at 1070 from 1150, and State 7 is 1090 from 1200, with no direct overclock to GPU core. Memory is at 880mhz, with no undervolt, Power Limit is at 50%. I haven't tried lower voltages or overclocking anymore than that as I was happy with those, they seem to be standard and easily available to most people who recorded their results. I got my unit in August 2017, so I imagine a more recently manufactured card would have better results due to better manufacturing processes.

Lazy Guide to undervolting Vega 56

              • @FabMan: I see. I have an RX480 with a blower and for some reason even that is almost too much for me so I'm begging to think there is something wrong with me if people can easily tolerate vega cards with the same coolers. I pulled bigger undervolts on mine but that's probably because my clock speeds are lower too. I set max temp to 85, target to 70 with fan speeds set at 1500 for min and 2500 for target.
Doesn't power limit +50% mean that when the GPU needs more power it will take it or is it that it always takes more power for maximum performance? I never understood that. I haven't tampered with it because I'm afraid it may be the second one, which I'm afraid the temps won't be able to handle.
Also what are your temps? I just replaced my thermal paste for the first time (it was actually dried up only after two years) and I'm getting 53c on idle with web browser, discord and steam open and dual monitors, is that normal? For some reason it doesn't go to that 1500rpm I have set until it exceeds 70c, so it can go up to 70c without changing fan speeds ON IDLE! is that normal?
It does that for example in madVR GPU video decoding, it's a GPU heavy task but not so heavy as a game so it just idles at very high temps and fan speed doesn't increase because the load isn't high enough and the temps aren't at the target temp.

                • @Ostrk: Blower cooler Vega 56 in an iTX case, should be hotter and louder than other setup's but it doesn't bother me. It maybe because of the undervolt, along with my PC being behind my monitor and my speakers are beside my monitor. So when the gaming is going my speakers usually prevent any of the fan noise from bothering me.

The Power Limit +50% does allow it to draw more power when it needs it and when it is within the maximum temperature set, but from what I understand, this along with the undervolt still keeps it cooler and quieter. My FPS are always capped with FreeSync, so when I could be pulling 90fps, my GPU doesn't allow it past 75fps, saving some of it's performance. I probably should slap on FurMark and listen to my PC become a jet engine.

                  • @FabMan: Oh that's very weird, the speakers one does make sense and I agree but you should notice the noise when you are not listening to anything yes? Capped with freesync? care to explain? I have freesync but I don't see why capping the fps is necessary. Unless if you mean you capped it because of your monitor's refresh rate.
Have you not extensively benchmarked it yet?
The weirdest thing is that my PC is not on my desk but instead to the side in the corner, so noise should not be so loud. That plus the fact that I wear closed back headphones should cancel out all noise but it doesn't…hmm.
I have been told it could be my case, it's a corsair carbide 100r.

                    • @Ostrk: My monitor 3440 x 1440 refresh rate is 75hz, so that is why it can be capped by FreeSync. Depending on the game of course, it can dip below and the GPU gets hit harder.

No benchmarking of before or after, merely, put those settings in and played games without any noticable issue. I could do a before and after with GPU benchmarking tools to see how much it improves the situation. In the past I cared about benchmarks, just after a couple of decades it got boring for me. Last computer I overclocked my CPU 50% and flashed my GPU's BIOS with a modified one, trying to push it hard. Now I just enjoy a smaller iTX system, that doesn't demand too much attention from me.

I'm not sure about that PC case, it could be you are sensitive to noise and since I've got two kids under 3, a fan spinning a little louder pales in comparison to kids screaming over who gets to play with that toy when hundreds of others are available.

        • It's louder than a normal 2 fan setup but I don't find it too bad. I do play with headphones though

          • @Gina Rinehart: Hmm I think there's just something wrong with me. I can't sleep at night with noise in the house and can't play games without being irritated by the noise, bollocks!
I have seen one of these cards on gumtree that interested me which is why I'm asking.

            • @Ostrk: Noise at night use to bother me too, I had to create white noise, a highly repetitive noise such as a fan spinning to help. Chargers high pitch squeal prevents me from sleeping, but another lower pitch sound over the top helps cancel it out. Not sure how that can help you.

              • @FabMan: Hmm unfortunately not the same I'm afraid. The noise problem for me is my family. I've left my PC on for downloading overnight and never had a problem sleeping. I wish I had your problem because I feel like high pitched noise could be blocked out with earbuds yes?

                • @Ostrk: Earbuds definitely do that, I do shift work and often sleep during the day. Fan + earbuds + sleeping tablets for me.

      • Why are g sync monitors more expensive? Is it because of nvidia card support only or are they just better?

        • +1

It's because Nvidia charges money from manufacturers to install the tech while AMD doesn't. Just typical Nvidia behavior.

        • most of the work is done in the monitor for gsync,
done on the card in freesync, and its free….

    • Great buy, got it a while ago and running ,1440p freesync 2 and didn't cost a fortune. Fine wine keeps getting finer

  • I have to be honest I went to team green because my r290 was so goddamn noisy. My 1070 is whisper quiet in comparison, my Xbox oneX is noisier..

    • and the difference in power consumption is considerable…

      that said, freesync
