I changed from run flats to normal tyres and was hence looking for a tyre repair kit as the car had no spare tyre.

This was the cheapest I could find it for. I price matched at Supercheap Auto.

No spare tyre? I thought that was illegal.

a lot of cars come without a spare now to save weight and space. a couple i know off the top of my head are the swift sport and the civic type r

      • I didn't know that.
Read a review of the Swift Sport, which makes mention of "…an onboard compressor (supplied in place of the spare)…", and a review of the Civic Type R makes mention of a "…Tyre repair kit…". So both of those have some 'solution' as such.

      • Ford Fiesta too, since 2010 or so. My wife's Fiesta came with a compressor and an aerosol can of gunk that expired years ago.

Manufacturers like to pull the important crap out of cars, don't they?

Bring back the side bumper strips.
      Bring back the spare tyre.
Put on a bloody rear windscreen wiper (no matter how much manufacturers pretend you don't need one, that's rubbish).
Bring back a front bumper high enough to not smash your car on a non-mountable kerb whilst parking in a carpark (ok maybe that's not universal.. yet. Stupid Toyota)

99% of cars are all scrapped underneath the front "too low" no wonder the punters want SUV's

      • +1

Rear windscreen wipers are only allowed on SUV's and hatches.

If you haven't used this before, you may want to be aware that the sealant has it's limitations. Works well on a slow leak caught early, but less helpful if your tire runs very flat, or has significant damage.

Doesn't seem like a great deal, would you pay $40 for just that compressor or the box that keeps sealant and compressor together?

The sealant on it's own is available at SCA for $10.

    Compressors are from $10 elsewhere.

If feel like if I'm in the situation where I need to use a compressor, a $10 kmart compressor is risky…

      • Maybe, but is this one any better or just the same one in fancy packaging?

If you read Amazon reviews on the kit from this deal then you'll see that most of the 1 star ratings came from people who had the compressor fail on them or the sealant leak while still in the pack…

        • No I agree, these "packs" are normally the cheapest junk they can find since nobody can confirm the quality very easily because its in a pack.

        • On amazon there are 252 reviews for this with an average of 4.2/5
There are 18 1 star reviews and of those 18 there are 5 that say the compressor stopped working or the unit was DOA which is less than 2%. This kit had many positive reviews on many car forums as well with heaps of people having used the compressor multiple times. I fully admit that the slime will have it's limits. Apparently it also expires, and needs to be replaced even if the bottle has not been opened after several years. I would still also have some plugs for larger holes or holes where the slime oozes out and doesn't seal.

          • @masuta: I wasn't implying it's a bad product. It's probably pretty useful actually.

When it comes to being a bargain though I notice that I can have the same functionality for $20 by buying the slime at SCA and a compressor at Kmart.

I've had one of those Kmart compressors for a number of years, it is noisy and slow, but does the job. Better than one I had from SCA for twice the price that packed it in pretty quickly.

    • Can't see any specs but this one says it'll inflate the tyre in 4mins.

Assuming that's from flat that's pretty good. I'd be surprised if you can find a $10 compressor that can pump up a tyre from flat in 4mins or even at all.

If you use sealants, for the love of god, let your tire place know before they go to remove the old tire. Otherwise things get messy
