  • You can also get WD Green M.2 480GB ssd's for pretty cheap, just $102.40 after PODCAST however it's almost sold out, 8 units left.

    • +2

This is a better deal - same price per gb (~$0.21/GB) but faster

        • You should be able to find Cheaper SATA drives with the same speed

        • +3

This is a SATA M.2 not an nvme M.2. There is a difference in speed.
SATA maxes out at around 540MB/s while nvme goes around 1500 upwards.

          • -8

@Taleria: My point is that no one should buy SATA M.2 if they can avoid it. and NVMe M.2. goes much higher than 1500. I was just stating that as minimum speed I would want from M.2. drive

            • +3

@jd3shaw: Because there are laptops that only has 1 M2 drive along with 1 traditional 2.5" drive. You would be using 2.5" for cheap HDD storage and you don't need NVMe which does nothing for 99% of users in term of speed. So a cheap SATA M.2 to speed up that 2 cores ages old laptop while being sensible in terms of $ spent.

            • +6

@jd3shaw: What happens if the end user does not have an nvme M.2 socket on their motherboard?
SATA m.2 is a good compatible small form factor storage medium for this price.

            • +4

@jd3shaw: Not all M.2 slots are NVMe, some are only SATA.

              • -3

@dheywood: I know this. I'm just not sure why people are commenting this is faster than the WD Option if speed doesn't matter, just buy the cheapest if you're going for SATA.

          • +2

@Taleria: Yeah but if you don't need the speed, this is better for cable management.

            • @idonotknowwhy: I fully agree with you which is why I voted positively for this deal!
I bought 1 to free up an HDD bay while utilising my spare M.2 (SATA only) slot.

        • +1

          There's a difference between a M.2 SSD and a M.2 NVMe…

        • -2

Don't listen to me I only have a couple of 970 Evo's and 2x1080Ti I clearly don't know anything about cheap average hardware for laptops

          • +4

            @jd3shaw:

            970 Evo

Yep, I can tell. You didn't go for the pro version like I did, because you're cheap, and now you have a sluggish joke of a computer ;)

  • It seems SanDisk one is around 40% faster than WD Green based on userbenchmark. 8 bucks more will be totally worthy I believe.

  • are there any nvme ones at this price? why is msata always so cheap

    • +11

Faster = more expensive. Not hard to understand

    • Also looking for a NVMe drive. Keen on a paticular lenovo laptop but the hdd lets it down. Would quite happily buy a ~500gb replacement and swap out myself

    • +3

Honestly the speed difference from a SATA to an NVMe drive will be fairly negligible in 99% of real world applications. Literally split second differences in loading times for most people. Having said that, I did personally opt to pay more of an NVMe drive over a SATA one when putting together my build earlier this year, but that was before SATA M.2 drives were this cheap.

      • +2

I opted for SATA so I can have ALL my stuff on SSD for very fast access. 2.5TB and counting.

It would be a fortune to get that much on EVO 960/970.

        • +1

Yeah. I have 1.5TB of SSDs and a 4TB HDD. With these kinds of prices…. I can see myself replacing my 4TB with SSDs very very soon.

        • I have a sff build with 2x m.2 & just enough room for 3x 2.5". I decided it would be best to have one high performance m.2 for boot & a large secondary m.2 for data so these sata ssds in a m.2 form factor are extremely helpful. still waiting for a larger performance m.2 to go cheap as I only have a 256gb 960. 3.2TB so far!

      • Honestly the speed difference from a SATA to an NVMe drive will be fairly negligible in 99% of real world applications

A load of honest garbage that you can disprove by simply booting Windows.

        • -1

how many times do you load windows a day? I do it once a week maybe?

          Maybe use another example?

  • +2

This is a really good deal for m.2 SATA. pity they don't do 1TB

  • Stupid question. Does it fit into a 2.5" hdd bay?

    • Then go for 860 Evo would be easier.

    • +2

No - this is an M.2 which is usually directly on your motherboard, if your motherboard supports it. You can get adapters for it, but 2.5" form factor SSDs are readily available so there's little reason to not just get one of those directly.

    • 2.5" are commonly discounted. Just give it a few days.

  • Ozbargainers…I need a 2242 M.2….any good deals out there for them?

  • +1

You can get a Samsung 860 Evo 500GB for $119 at MSY, regular every day price. I'd probably go with that.

    • -1

Yep, people going off at me about this same point above…
