    $18 shipping to NSW…

    no thanks

  • no DTS or mention of 'straight thru'.

  • Hmm, it is quite cheap for a HD Media player. But the sucky thing is it doesn't play WMV files.

  • or a bunch of other formats!
for an extra $10 get yourself that Strong stb or even the Lenoxx stb, they play mkv/mp4 files as well as having a hd tuner pvr!

    • which model of Strong stb or Lenoxx stb are you referring to that can play mkv/mp4 player as well as hd tuner pvr? can they also play rmvb and flv?

  • itestate have for $45 got officeworks to match price (like 3 months ago and got for $42ish)

I was starting to kick myself for buying the theatre+ last year for around $70 when I realised this is just the regular theatre.

    • I agree. I had the same reaction given I also purchased the theatre+.

This device is still good value for what it does.

      • I had absolutely the same reaction.

    • lol we bought the Western Digital Media player for $199

  • Btw, do you guys here know any box that will play wmv, flv, mov files etc? My last resort is connecting my pc to my tv…

    • htpc systems built around asrock ion 330 are usually good and affordable. dunno if it's going to be superseded though. have a google, good luck with it.

  • very good price for a media player

  • +2

no H.264 or MKV support - Completely useless in my situation

  • Hi Guys

What you think of this one

    http://cgi.ebay.com.au/Astone-EP-05-EP05-Full-HD-1080p-MKV-H…

Astone EP-05 EP05 Full HD 1080p MKV HDMI Media Player
MKV H.264 RM RMVB Card Reader USB Host Free HDMI Cable

    • I think its Astone and plagued with problems, if you like to tinker then go for Astone

I like to tinker but havent bothered with Astone yet!

  • Hm. Sticking with WD for the moment, this doesn't quite cut it, and doesn't scale.

  • thanks Mikinoz what about this one

    http://cgi.ebay.com.au/Noontec-A3-Full-HD-Media-Player-HDMI-…

Noontec A3 Full HD Media Player HDMI MKV H.264 AVI RMVB

    • Noontec is the same or better than astone, the v8 pro being the better model.

It might be better to bite the bullet and go for the AC ryan playon or WD

It's a shame it's through Centrecom, otherwise it might be worth getting. But as far as I'm concerned it wouldn't be worth getting for $1 from Centrecom. Centrecom has worse customer service than MSY, now thats saying alot.

    • C'mon, they can't be as bad as GameDude computers we have here in Brisbane lol; do a whirlpool thread search and you'll see what I mean haha.

      • +1

Never dealt with them personally but yea they look to be very bad also. But your not meant to compare bad against bad then judge one to be good. Places should be judged against what is already good to get a real idea of whether they are deserving of your business.

  • I have this at home. Its a good media player. I just have my own external drive plugged into it. However no HDMI and also it doesn't play MP4.

  • Whilst not a bad deal, I really want the + version, anybody know of any deals for this?

  • +2

i brought the + version a few months back for around $100 from harris technology and hate it.

It has a horrible interface you would not expect from a brand like seagate the ethernet streaming from PC is BS the feature is useless as even full HD video is streamed slightly blocky and with standard 700mb avi movies forget about it also with streaming even though it says you can fast forward and rewind you can not. I also found it did not play some formats that it claimed it could and the remotes range is about 2m and it has to be pointed directly at it.

Playing files from usb though once you load it up its normal and plays them fine.

This is a crazy cheap price though and if you dont want it for steaming and dont mind a really bad interface circa 1996 go for it.

    • I use my + with a Seagate Freeagent Go and find it to be perfect for what I need however I do agree with your issues with it.

      • The remote, while functionally good, is terrible when you're not pointing it right at the box.
      • Every time I turn it on it needs to "cache" or whatever the files on the HDD. Unnecessary to do this on every startup and wastes a lot of time.
      • I haven't tried networking so can't comment there, but I did try 2 seperate USB wifi dongles and neither worked so that's it for that.
    • Upgrade the firmware and the interface completely changes, also try using decent batteries in the remote and make sure there isnt any other interference between the unit and remote. The batteries provided are crap

      The caching on boot sucks

      • i think i did upgrade it when i first got it through the unit itself?? not 100% but i am reasonably sure i did and it made minimal change. but is there another or better version from seagate? if so where from?

        • Go to the seagate site and check the support section for your product

  • whats the best media player that can play rmvb format and i can connect a usb wireless dongle to play videos on my NAS (network storage)?

    • I use a PS3 networked (hardwired) but you can wireless, and use Mezzmo media server. Anything the PS3 can't play the media server transcodes on the fly. I also use this for a Samsung 32 inch LCD, which originally wouldn't play anything off my NAS, Mezzmo does it seamlessly.

      • thanks beachmuscles, is there a media player besides the ps3 that is under $100 that can do the same thing? i dont have a ps3 :(

        • I was using a Noontec System that i paid around $100, that it had a hardwired ethernet connection that worked ok (clunky interface). You could get a wireless dongle but it was another $50. Most media players are Linux based, so you don't have great options for wireless dongles unless designed by same manufacturer (proprietry crap - aka Apple) You'd probably struggle to get 'good' wireless from under $100. Xbox 360 is another option (again more $$'s) I use my PS3 far more for media than games. Most good telly's these days has media players inbuilt and Samsungs have LAN with DLNA.

        • I picked up an Astone 110D for ~$70 a year ago and it plays RMVB, 1080p MKV and pretty much any other format I throw at it. Interface is ugly and somewhat clunky, but the unit is otherwise very reliable (upgraded to the 1.99 firmware).

You can get a Astone WiFi dongle for it, but I sourced a much cheaper option from Dealextreme:

          http://www.dealextreme.com/p/802-11g-b-300mbps-usb-wireless-…

The Dealextreme dongle is 300Mbps 802.11n (despite the description) and uses a Realtek chipset, so it's fully compatible with the Astone unit. Rock solid, with no issues streaming 1080p video from my NAS over WiFi.

        • yeah i was thinking of getting an astone 110D too since it is fairly cheap. do all realtek chipsets work? i have a wireless N dongle that uses the realtek RTL8192U chipset. will that work?
          cheers

        • dealsniper: I think the 110D has drivers for most if not all Realtek WiFi chipsets; the Dealextreme dongle I use has a RTL8191SU. The RTL8192U in your 802.11n dongle will almost certainly work, as confirmed by Astone in their forums: http://www.astone.com.au/forum/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=89#p355

  • @ozchilli, the strong 5428 and the lenoxx hds600, the strong is slightly better with regular firmware updates, and no, they don't play realmedia files, flv didn't try that, youtube videos are generally crappy i don't bother with those, i prefer mkv

  • What would be the cheapest way to play 1080p MKV and AVI movies from my 2TB usb external hard drive?

    • Through your computer ;)

  • This things cheaper at ARC Computers and that's the normal everyday price no special at all! I dont get why this made it on here as a Bargain? ITS NOT! ( product http://www.arc.com.au/pub.php?gid=23361&pid=38754&p=product )

A quick http://www.staticice.com.au/ will help next time people!

    • yes, i agree this is jus a regular price. nothing special and plus its from scamcom

    • Wish I'd seen your post a couple of days ago when I ordered this! The cheapest I could find on staticice was $45 though.

  • Ordered on Monday, TNT tried to deliver today, sadly I wasn't home. Pretty happy with Centrecom's quick service, despite what others have said here.
