      Mate I've claimed this deal i think 3 times before. Have 6 vodaphone sims from the $40 sim starter kit for $20 with free $20 netflix giftcard from woolies deal a few months back - as long as i maintain a netflix sub which i always planned on doing, those months of phone service is free. Then on the alternate months I port into kogan on one of these deals - 32gb for 0.49, 4.90, 0.99 etc. My phone bill for the last few months hjas averaged something like $2.50 effectively.

      They've done this a few times - just got to remember to cancel the autotopup otherwise you'll be hit up for $50 at end of the month. This is just a ploy to attract new customers away from the big telcos.

        so how do you do it? Switch to another provider and switch back to kogan? I'm completely new to this, been paying $40 with telstra for 8gb, sad.

          yep port number into kogan. the day it expires port the same number into vodaphone. rinse and repeat. vodaphone is good as it gives you 35 days outside of kogan and there are often vodaphone discounts posted on OZB. Lebara and optus sometimes have sim discounts as well - have used them before to do the same. try not to port on a weekend but if you have to saturday not sunday as the port happens quicker - i ported into vodaphone last monday and it only took 20 minutes to process - sometimes can be a few hours.

            @Wilburre: Cheers. I guess it's just a matter of finding another deal from another provider every month and just port back and forth between providers. Correct? If so, cheers for that.

              @newboz: that's it mate. takes about 15 min of my time each month to sort the port out, and sometimes 20m-2hr without service if you do the port once your plan is already expired (you can avoid this by starting the port before your current sim plan expires but you lose that day). because i have a few voda sims from a woolies deal i only need to find a new deal every second month - but when those run out i might look into the 3 month deals kogan sometimes run, or god forbid have to pay a decent price for my usage lol. As long as the provider isn't the same 2 months in a row you're sweet.

              Good places to look for offers - here of course, vodaphone, vodaphone through shopback, lebara, optus, amaysim, amaysim through ebay/shopback/cash rewards, woolies sometimes have half price voda/optus/telstra sims.

          If you don't need to keep the same phone number, you don't need to bother porting out and back in again. You just buy two (or more) SIMs and take the new phone number printed on them as you activate each one. Because "new customer" effectively means "new account", not 'new person'.

          e.g. My current Kogan SIM expires midnight tomorrow. So I just ordered one 49 cent SIM, which I'll activate the day after tomorrow. That will then expire on 12th Nov. But I also bought a second 49 cent SIM, which I'll activate on 8th Nov (the last day it can be activated). This means I have a 4 day overlap - I lose 4 days of the first 49 cent SIM - but it also means I get (nearly) 2 months and 64GB for 98 cents.

              @tempura: In theory yeah. But from what others have said, you just say you have less that 4 services and nothing happens. Your old numbers will be deleted 3 months after expiry anyway and recycled.

        I thought that porting between resellers of the same carrier took a lot longer than between carriers, has that changed recently? You get Voda to Kogan in under 2 hours now? That would be great news!

        • i did kogan to voda on monday or tuesday last week - 20 minutes. can't remember how long my last voda to kogan took but was under a couple of hours and was on a weekend too. i remember the first time i ported into kogan it took 2 days as it failed because some details didn't match up with the old provider (they were wrong with old provider - was either optus or lebara from memory), but once i changed the details and rerequested the port it was a couple hours. im sure others have had both good and bad experiences, but for me it hasn't been too painful, especially given the $$$ you can save doing this.

            Last time I ported via Telstra, using a free SIM I got from some promotion, turned into hassle too.

          I tried a Voda -> Kogan port in mid September and it took less than 2 hours. I didn't actually pay attention to exactly how long it took cause I expected it to take longer, but it was reasonably smooth!

          its not that bad, takes about 15min a month. Usually don't have to spend much time finding a deal as someone posts one on here.

      • I used to be a sim whore, spent a year paying less than $5 a month. In the end I couldn't be bothered anymore now that plans are so cheap.

      • port in and out like i do - i go back to kogan every second month. The time limit is 30 days - ie you cant go in and out within 30 days of each other. I use cheap vodaphone sims from a previous deal to get 35 days expiry, then i go back to kogan.

        • Or just use the new phone number they give you and do it every month, and make everyone that knows you update your number every month.

        You mean you wish it was for existing phone numbers. Because anyone that buys it - existing customer or not - and simply takes the new number printed on the SIM instead of porting out/in again… IS a 'new customer'.

  • Likely a dumb question, but I am keen to see how Vodafone goes in my area as I get very poor reception with Telstra.

    As these guys use the Vodafone network, would this be suitable? Or am I missing on certain bands or coverage that a normal Vodafone SIM gets?

          • @oblivianz: tbh that could be a bit dicey if you ever get caught - but i highly doubt theyd ever check it. From memory the limit came about due to organised crime, drugs, money laundering etc. I go through some sims myself, but all on the same number ported in and out each month so i actually only have 1 "active prepaid service".

    • mate i do it every second month. i have a bunch of cheap vodaphone $40 sim starter kits. voda for 35 days, then straight into kogan the next day on one of these type of deals. Have done it at least 3 times and been fine.

    Been porting around cheap sim, I think my average phone bill is around $7 month. Is there any repercussion in doing so?

    • i've been fine for about 6 months between voda and kogan. NOTE: by porting the same number around to different services you are not increasing the number of services in your name. The service you ported out of will mostl\ likely be cancelled within 30 days of porting the number out. The key is that they have to be "active services" - if you port the number out and cut the sim in half there's no way it can be active and you should be fine.

    • You are saving more than non-ozbargainers is the repercussion you will have to live with for the rest of your life :-)!

    Deals like these have forced me to use a dual sim phone as opposed to porting number. So much easier.

        My name. I assume after a few months Kogans gonna disconnect the old numbers for non use anyways.

        • I've just activated a second Kogan number. My first one I ported and was easy. This second one I redistered as a new number but I needed to call them. A bit anonnying

  • What's to stop existing customers buying this and then just using the code to recharge? Is there something in Kogan's systems that prevents this from occurring? Has anyone actually tried it to see if it works?

      • I would but I have a 365-day plan which doesn't end until January so I'm not going to do it. Convinced the wife's mother to go with Kogan because it is a lot cheaper than the Optus pre-paid she was using and if I can get this working for her as well then that's obviously a great saving for her.

      • I've never tried it, but i'm pretty sure they can create codes for new customers vs existing - it would be very easy and in their best interest to do so. The codes wouldn't be entirely randomly generated. They'd have to generate them from a secret otherwise anyone could just type gibberish in. They would have different secrets for each $ value of recharge so you don't get more than what you pay for. All they'd need to do is have a set of new customer and existing customer secrets to gen the codes with, then if you weren't a new customer your code wouldn't validate.

    • Tried to recharge my kids mobile phones (already on Kogan) with the recharge code from a 'new customers only' promo today - but it just straight up rejected the code as invalid.

      I think @Wilburre below has nailed it - new codes for new customers only.

      • No. As always with these SIMs, new customer = new account or new phone number (the new phone number printed on the SIM packet).

        i.e. You can activate multiple SIM cards - all in the same name - all debited from the same bank account - but each one must be activated as a new account, using the new phone number printed on them.

      • how do they know im a new customer? i've bought the 1.50 groupon deal last week and plan to activate that soon. if i buy this can i activate it again with a diff name? what ID do they ask to activate the sim?

          If you activate a new number, while using the same ID (you can use drivers licence and passport from what I remember), it still counts as a new customer; but you can't port in your existing Kogan number.
