dont forget to get 10% off catch cards with 7 11 fuel app. 18mm is an unusual size. is that a typo? 19mm is 'standard' for spanner sets

    • +3

One hell of a typo. It’s etched on the side of the spanned itself, visible in the 3rd photo.

      • I don't think it is a typo - a google search brings up a lot of references to 18mm, and according to Mitre10 website the part number for that one is '9118D/18 mm'.

They're rather crap sizes. I'd only use 8 10 13. The rest is for imperialish sizes.

      • I agree. The odd sizes are probably why they are going so cheaply.

      • 8/10/12/14 will undo most fasteners on an engine.

17 would be a good inclusion, but these geared wrenches are more useful for reaching fasteners in cramped spaces that take ages to undo with a regular ring spanner (like ones that you can only rotate 10 degrees before repositioning the spanner). I'd say 95% of fasteners in those locations would be 14mm or smaller.

These are specialist tools for specific situations. If you can reach a fastener with a regular socket wrench then that will be a better tool to do the job.

Definitely not how these are marketed. I have an Aldi set which looks very similar and IMO they are easier to use in all situations except when you need a breaker bar or need to hit it with a hammer. I was thinking of buying this set if it comes with a warranty so I could do just that

Just a note my set has 17 and 19mm, I think I picked it up for 20 bucks

        • Unfortunately I don't work with cars. But usually need both a spanner and socket set to compliment each other. Should of clarified a perfect set for me would be 8 10 13 16 17 19 24. Everything else in between is just fluff.

no one really uses 15 and 18!

Just so people know you can get flexible ratcheting spanners which are more handy than these. They can get into tighter spaces more but they are more expensive. https://m.ebay.com.au/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=m4084.l13…

    • +3

The flexible heads can become loose and flop around. Very hard to use like that. Cheaper ones will likely be more susceptible to that I'd imagine.

      • +1

At the end of the day, no single spanner set is going to undo everything you need to undo.

For example, geared wrenches like these are pretty much useless for any fastener that has minimal clearance around it because the ratchet heads are way bulkier than the equivalent socket or standard ring spanner wall width.

So sometimes a flex head gear spanner will be more useful than a non-flex version and vice versa.

        • Ive also had even good ones jump when trying to really torque down some bolts (this was for a worm gear on an intercooler charge pipe pushing 28psi…). Fixed wrench was way easier

          • +3

@Hellman109: These wrenches have tiny little gears and components in the head and are not designed to torque down or crack bolts loose. They are ratcheted for a reason, that is, to hasten the removal of bolts that would otherwise take ages to do using a fixed wrench.

Oops 17 & 19 are imp sizes which are missing . I wont pull the trigger on this one But nice find OP and thanks for sharing

    • +4

17mm and 19mm are metric sizes, not imperial.

    • Usually for a 10mm and 12mm bolt or nut.

  • I’m a snap-on tools kinda guy and I came across grear wrench. I have to say that these are brilliant, they come with a lifetime replacement warranty. I second the flex head ratchets down vote, they will become floppy and become a nuisance

  • Do these come with cable ties?

  • +1

BE WARNED these look to have quite large heads on them, which means you will struggle to get them around some bolts that don't have a lot of clearance around them.

They'll be good spanners still and are a great buy - but compare them with some Kincrome ones (which will be 5-10x the price admittedly) and you'll see what I mean!
