  • Bought 2 more, now have 2 running Tasmota & 1 spare. One plugged into the other. First has 16hrs up time. Other just plugged in.
Noticed vcc reported by each 3.126v & 3.190v
So both running down the low end of the working voltage range for the TYWE2S (ESP8285).

And an update to the power supply in these units, they use a LM1117 regulator. But even so, a 1/2 wave rectified input is still crap in, crap out.
    No firmware will fix this.
It would be interesting to put a CRO across the 3.3v rail and see what the noise level is. But right now, I like living & I like my CRO.
But I do honestly expect the DC rail to be connected to the AC rail at some point. That's how the AC monitoring chip is wired in the Sonoff units; across the 0.001ohn measuring resistor in the Active line. As least in the Medion it is in the Neutral line. 1/2 safe!

    • Where'd you find more? I went looking on the weekend and couldn't find any! (NSW)

      • Have you asked the staff?

Many stores moved stock to the front of store, so it wouldn't have been visible.

    • How are you finding the Tasmota?

Does the power monitoring seem to be working well?

In theory we should be able to flash these units with Tasmota without opening them up. Probably needs someone that really knows what they are doing to work it out.

  • Thumbs Up to Jovan and Median for hopefully resolving. Has anyone tried alexa with Median app or is that still a no go anyway I will find out tonight.

I've been using with Echo Spot & all 6 plugs connected since day 1.

      Whats the issue you're having?

      • Some/most people had trouble connecting to Alexa via the Medion skill. They had to use the Tuya skill instead. Supposedly the Medion skill now works.

        • I've had no troubles at all since day 1. Connected beautifully,..the only issue I had was the random switching, but that works perfectly now.

  • +1

Has anyone had any success incorporating these into Home Assistant? I have failed.

    • I failed too :(.. anybody got any detailed steps how to flash tasmota?

    • I finally got the Medion plug working (mostly) in Home Assistant using the old tuya.py method.
      See https://community.home-assistant.io/t/tuya-device-help/39597…

      • Thanks for posting that! Can I ask how you got the local_key?

          1. I installed an old version of eFamilyCloud (google for version 1.0.7), another app in the tuya family.
          2. Connect android phone to PC and enable USB debugging, run adb logcat > logcat.txt (this diverts the output from logcat to the logcat.txt file)
          3. Add the Medion smart plug to the eFamilyCloud app like you would to any of the tuya apps
          4. Look in the logcat.txt file for the localkey

What I hadn't realised earlier is that each time you add the plug to an app it generates a new localkey.

          • @Pterry: Thanks for explaining. I'll give that a crack later.

I've had the intermittent on/off problem too. I raised it with their support desk ( [email protected] ) and they advised tonight "We’ve released a firmware upgrade overnight so please open the Medion Life+ App, select your device and you’ll be prompted to upgrade to firmware version 1.10. You’ll need to do this for each device."
I've upgraded one plug, and up upgrade message reported "New Fireware 1.10 Fixes intermittent on/off switch".

  • I've just upgraded the firmware too. I'll see if I get woken up overnight by my lamp coming on 🀣

My local Aldi have these reduced half price now. I wonder if quite a few people returned them before knowing about the firmware update.

    • Which Aldi store? :-)

    • Buy them all!

    • I suspect even if told at the store that there had been a firmware fix, which I doubt would have happened, that most people wouldn't have persisted.

  • So far so good I think it has been fixed and you can use medion app to connect to alexa.

Even if there were half price I wouldn't buy any more they are just too big and takes both spaces in double power point.

    • It depends on your points. I have a a newer style that fits both the medion & a normal adapter.

      • I have standard Hpm double powerpoints i purchased a angled double adapter so now i can plug three items. Next smart plugs I buy i will use medion as a reference how much smaller it needs to be.

        • All smart plugs are somewhat chunky. As you've done you can use a double adapter or a powerboard. Both work perfectly in other areas I've installed them.

        • I find over time that the bottom device often slips out of these connectors. It is a solution, but not a great one.

          • @whats up skip: If the bottom device is slipping, then the prong/s are out of alignment. Re-adjust and you should be good. Plugs should never have the ability to fall out of a socket.

            • @the Insider: I am referring to the double adapters that are set at 90 degrees to each other. When placed in an outlet that is vertical, one lead or device will have the continual load of gravity on it. Over time with the expansion and contraction of the connections and sockets they will slip. There is little that can be done. Bending the plugs prolongs the failure, but ultimately something like cable ties are needed to hold them against tug of gravity.

              • @whats up skip: Honestly, there are that many options for adapters on the market, just head to a local Bunnings. You also have the option of converting a 2 point power phase, to a 4 or even 8 point power phase quite cheaply.

For 19.95,..I can't see how anybody can complain.

        • It won't be at 19.95 or cheaper,..that's why we're on OzBargain :-)

          • @the Insider: There was a ebay Plus special for the TP-Link HS100 for $20. It won't belong before better designed devices sell around the $20 on a regular basis. The sales volume in these sorts of devices is now increasing rapidly.

            • @whats up skip: Better designed? It's only a plug, Lol. We aren't talking about a fashion piece. Most people are able to hide room plugs behind furniture. I've seen bad looking plugs, and this really isn't.

              • @the Insider: The better design I refer to is the ability to plug something in next to it on a standard double power point. This is one of the biggest complaints about this Medion Switch.

                • @whats up skip: Haven't got an issue personally. I have a toaster plugged into the point next to the Medion & both fit fine.

Again there are a number of different points available on the market, so simply head over to Bunnings if yours is narrower.

  • I have checked a few stores now and I haven't seen any discounted.

Is anyone still having problems after the firmware update?

    • I haven’t seen any fullstop! I wouldn’t mind another one or two…

      • These stores are on the Southern Gold Coast.

  • so I have soldered the wires and ensured that gpi0 is grounded upon boot. Having problems with esptool detecting the device:

    esptool.py v2.5.1
    Found 1 serial ports
    Serial port COM7
    Connecting…….._____….._____….._____….._____….._____….._____….._____
COM7 failed to connect: Failed to connect to Espressif device: Timed out waiting for packet header

A fatal error occurred: All of the 1 available serial ports could not connect to a Espressif device.

I am using a W10 computer with one of these I bought: https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/FTDI-FT232RL-USB-to-TTL-Serial-C…

I have tried powering off the usb serial device as well as plugging 3.3v and gnd to an external atx power supply, but just seems I can't get it connected. Has anyone had the same strife? Might end up returning these and getting an easier to flash plug….

    • can you see any output on the serial port when the plug powers up? Even garbage? If not swap your TX and RX line around and try again.

      • Output being the led's on the usb serial adaptpr? If so, yes, the led's light up when the device is plugged in as well as when trying to use esptool. Is there another methid of viewing serial output?

I have also tried swapping rx and tx, no luck

        • No, you should see output in a terminal. Open putty and you should see some output. 778000 baud or something similar should show the bootloader info when it reboots.

          • @demod: This is the output on Com7 upon applying 3.3v and gnd to the device. tx -> rx and rx -> tx already applied

            • @dkstorm: If you set the baud rate to 74880 You should get something like (sorry, i just guessed the speed above)

              ets Jan 8 2013,rst cause:2, boot mode:(3,7)

When you get that you know your serial is working, and you can look elsewhere to figure out what is going wrong.

              The plug still works though?

              • @demod: plug still works yes. Some progress using the baud setting you mentioned. Via Putty upon power up:

                I will keep fiddling.

GPIO not grounded, I get boot mode: (1,7) but no additional text

I must be on the right track here, just pity esptool still times out.

                • @dkstorm: definitely good to go. nothing wrong with your hardware there.

I've only used the arduino IDE for flashing. Can sometimes take a few goes to get the timing right. I usually hold the pad grounded, then when I know its about to start the flash I reset or power-up the device. Once it starts uploading you can let go grounding the gpio.

  • Is the power consumption monitoring supported under Tasmota?

Do you have to configure or select a particular model that the Medion is the equivalent of?

    • Choose the "Teckin" module, and everything except the button will work.
You can get the button working by creating your own profile and assigning the button to GPIO3. BUT its useless, the line is so noisy flicks off and on at will.

They have performed some sort of software magic to make it work in the stock firmware, I can't fault their implementation at all. Would love to know how they did it. Ive tried changing the debounce values in tasmota, but nothing works. Even tried smoothing the noise via hardware. So I disabled the button by using the Teckin module again!

      • Thanks.

Does the button problem then mean you can only switch on and off via the app/web etc?

        • yep, unfortunately

  • Just bought 2 of these yesterday but cannot for the life of me get it to work with Google Home. Whenever I try to bind it to my account, it just times out with a Gateway Timeout..

    • Yes, I was getting that too. It says it's compatible with Google and Alexa however. I've put it on the back burner till I can be bothered to try again.

    • Which Aldi did you get then and are there any left?
