Can anybody comment on the quality of these hand grinders? I'm tossing up between one of these and a porlex.

these grinders are just generic with different logos on them. i bought the exact same one from rosegal a while back for about $8 - it works ok.

on the finest setting it's decent for espresso; not the fastest process, but good enough for the price. also the handle is a separate piece, so i recommend using a rubber band to keep it with the main unit while not in use.

        This guy grinds.

I bought one on a whim to see how it compared to my porlex tall.

The main things I noticed: the inner burr is 'floating' but the outer burr is fixed to the outside of the unit, which means it never seems to quite line up perfectly. It probably means the rougher the grind, the more uneven the results will be - depends on how much you care about that.

I haven't used it much but I've kept it for spare parts. The fitting is identical to the tall and the whole zanmini is cheaper than a single replacement porlex part.

The porlex is definitely a better grinder but they're at very different price points.

    • What Mister Plod says.
They are all generic with different logos.
I bought one a while ago for just under $9 and it works fine.

    • Anyone know if the parts might fit the hario mini mill?

  • can you use these for salt and pepper?

    • +4

Salt probably, however I wouldn't recommend it for pepper corns. Pepper corns are considerably harder than roasted coffee beans.

  • Noob question. Non coffee drinker here but just curious. Once the beans have been grounded, does it become like instant coffee or does it need to go to a percolator or something like that?

    • ah yeah you'll need to filter it through something first, as coffee grounds don't dissolve in water like the instant stuff.

    • +1

      Unfiltered is Turkish coffee.

This would be used with a plunger (french press) or moka pot. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moka_pot

      • Actually I've seen those who make Turkish coffee using a manual coffee grinder. They would wait for the waiter to boil in some kind of coffee cups, then put a few teaspoons in, stir and put back on the hotplate and wait till it goes up as coffee act in a similar way as milk when cooking. it wasn't bad coffee, though they do drink a lot ☕
