Ok this is my first submit so be kind :)
We got one of these for where I work and I could not believe the price for a 1RU rack server with 2x CPU's.
Specs
CPU's 2x Intel (R) Xeon (R) E5606 2.13GHz, 8M Cache, 4.8 GT/s QPI, 4C
Memory 8GB Memory (4x2GB), 1333MHz, Single Rank LV RDIMMs for 2 Processors
Optical drive 8x SATA slim DVD-ROM Drive
HDD 500GB 3.5-inch 7.2K RPM SATA II Hard Drive - Non Hotplug

You can customize the servers as well, we personally customized it so it eventually cost 2700 ex GST which had 16 GB ram, 2x500gb hard drives, sliding rail, hot swappable HDD's and a 5 year NBD warranty.

They also have similar offers for a variety of different servers such as the R610 which has has 250 off.

    There's only one problem with this server - it's a DELL. :)

Dell's support is light years ahead of HP's tho…

    • Any rack server suggestion at this price point with 3 year Next Business Day onsite warranty?

HP DL380G6 for $2200 with free laptop (needs hard drives though):

        http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/40644
        http://aztecit.com.au/products/21-HP-ProLiant-DL380-Servers/…

        • Compare apples with apples.

This is a 1 RU server with 2 processors, twice the ram, newer processor and has hard drives.

That is a 2 RU server with 1 processor 4 Gb of Ram, a older processor with no hard drives.

        • Err not really comparable. This is an 1RU and DL380 is 2RU so probably not in the same class. And

          • Dell R410 — 2x E5606, 8GB memory.
          • HP DL380 — 1x E5504, 4GB memory.

and the free laptop is an old model with C2D-T6670. Okay HP Proliant is fine product as well, warranty wise I think on-par with Dell. Just not the best bang for the buck if you are looking for a rack server.

        • @kasp & @scotty - True but I've had bad experiences with DELL so given the choice, I'd choose HP. However, if you trust DELL and the budget is tight, this DELL is obviously the better choice for this situation.

        • Just curious have your bad experiences been with the business products? (I have heard tonnes of horror stories with their home products however this was 5 or so years ago)

If it has been with the business products what has it been? Bad support or bad hardware?

        • @kasp - yep, business products - PowerEdge and PowerVault. We inherited the gear through an acquisition a couple of years ago and we had unending hardware faults. Our company uses HP so we eventually migrated all their gear to HP.

        • @Stix
Finding faults in (possibly old) hardware which was inherited through an acquisition is not surprising, not everyone works to the same standards.

I've used HP and Dell equally and had more hardware faults with HP then Dell - atleast double.
But then, the HP hardware we have is generally older which helps explain that.

Both companies have been great when it comes to replacing said hardware.

      • @Radar - In this particular instance, an email server stored on a PowerVault DAS running RAID completely died. It's all well and good if the hardware is replaced but the recovery process is the most frustrating.

That being said, I haven't dealt with DELL gear recently. Each to their own I guess. :)

We now run blades, SANs and virtualization but hardware loyalty aside, this is a good deal for the specs though…positive given…reluctantly. :D

    • I've always found Dell's business products great. However I can say I have never needed to call them for anything ever, so can't really testify to how their support is.

Even their home range has improved over the years (Still don't trust it 100%)

  • Only 4x HDD bays :(

    • +2

Don't really know how many drive bays you were expecting with a 1RU server.

      • Ive seen them with 6 and 8 2.5" bays so you can run a proper RAID 0/5 setup on a remote site…

        • True, I was talking about 3.5 drives.

I wouldn't have thought of a Raid 0/5 for a 1 RU server but I suppose it could be done with 2.5's. I still have not used a 2.5 drive except in a laptop. They might have a chassis which supports it, perhaps contact them. They have several chassis's to choose from for this model however they all have the same uninformative description so you never know.

  • Need one of these to run OzBargain…

The 386 starting to play up?

I wish. I know I shouldn't trust that guy who said "640k ought to be enough" when I got that IBM XT-compatible.

  • Dell servers are fantastic, as is there support. I`m running 6 of them now and have been for years.
Will also continue for years to come.

edit. Back on topic, is a good price also

    • Agreed. their support is better than IBM / Lenovo and no complaints from me

Shame it wont take a a SAS raid card

    • It has SAS 6/iR Integrated

      Or you can add
      SAS 5/E Controller Card $172.70.

As for plugging in your own Raid card, I very much doubt it, a 1 RU server is pretty tight space wise.
