There is a farm in Thirlmere, near Picton, about a hour south of Sydney.
      just search strawberry picking Thirlmere
Open in second week of NSW school holidays.

Bit more expensive though. You pay for entry then $10 a kg for what you pick.

        • +3

$10 is what I pay in store per kg.

          • @liquid metal: If you pick ripe strawberries, you'll have a much better tasting berry.

          • @liquid metal: Yeah but you don't pay Colesworth to enter the store and stack the shelves for them.

Might be worth it to put WA in the title.

    • +1

    • +13

      $8 for $2?

      I’ll take seven!!!

  • How much is normal price?

    • Tough crowd in here. No jokes allowed!

    • Clearly BYO.

    • +1

      Dick , head.

    • only if you're lucky!

  • +3

$8 a box at Kien's strawberry farm which is just a bit further down on Badgerup Rd. They also had $10 a box pre-picked.

    • +4

Yeah, reality is this year really so much strawberry unpicked and would go wasted soon and hit the hard work of the farmers for the year, just because of some stupid act by some individuals .

      • Then why are we seeing very high prices on strawberries?

        • +1

Cost of picking, packing and delivery. My family used to farm stone fruit, but their last season in the late 90s they were paying $2.30 to pick and pack per tray, but couldn't get that much per tray from the agents. Had to let all the work go to waste.

So it's mad food goes to waste, but we can't expect people to lose money at the same time.

I imagine the farmers are in the same position as my family. They would be trying to minimise their losses and perhaps composting the crop is cheaper than the loss they'd make harvesting.

Food waste really upsets me BTW.

Edit: there would be a lucky few producers close enough to population centres that could do pick all you can for $x, but the majority are too far away for schemes like that to be viable. They'll let their mates go to town, but there's only so much fruit of one type a friend circle can absorb at once 😀.

Kien's is not as good as this one. We have tried both this morning. I would happily pay at least $5 more for this one. For some unknown reason Kien's strawberry has no or very little taste.

Went there today, beautiful strawberries and easy to pick (AND LOTS OF FUN)….

Is it me or like 80% of strawberries i buy are not even sweet? Went to america and their stawberries are really sweet.aybe its gmoed..

    • +3

Most strawberries are tasteless here. My grandmother had a small farm in eastern Europe and strawberries she produced were sweet and soft.

      • Most strawberries I buy are lovely and sweet. Perhaps you need to change stores.

    • The cold weather makes a huge difference

    • I shelled out for strawberries at Wimbledon and they were amazing.

    • personally I believe the bigger the leaves the less the taste. I always pick the type with smaller leaves if available. Sadly most supermarkets sell the one with huge leaf.

    • Yeah I don't bother with them anymore. Taste like sand.

  • Someone ask the farm about shipping directly to customers or listing on https://www.megafresh.co/
I'm sure a lot of people who don't live near strawberry farms would be interested.

    • It’s a good thing farm workers never have anything to be disgruntled about.

Why are farmers letting people onto their property to pick strawberries? Sounds counter-intuitive to me. Free access to their produce where people can do whatever they want to the fruit.

    • +2

I don't think the farmers are planning on picking the crop they allow the public access to.

    • +2

probably a pick your own place, theres plenty of farms that do that. Especially small places in the middle of a city lol, this isn't a big commercial strawberry farm - its tiny.

    • Pricing at $10 a tray, even a big tray, is far more than they would get through the usual channels.

Also, as already commented, a lot segregate a patch of farm for just this purpose only. In my experience, usually areas they've picked already and they left some non-ripe fruit on the patch

    This is a sharp deal!

    • +1

Finding deals like this is a bit like trying to find a needle in the haystack

  • +2

Just came from there at one of the farms at Gnangara - $8 per box.

    • +1

You've got to try this one. Wish I went straight to this one instead the one few hundred meters further down the road.

  • +2

I've been to this couple of times in last few years and can confirm this price (10$ per box) has always been there for picking fruits yourself. If someone is wondering whether this is because of the needle drama 'no it's not'. They were very sweet (especially close to end of the season when they are ripen enough), nothing like those sold in stores. My family had a wonderful day out. Pity I can't go this year as I'm no longer in Perth. If you're in WA, you would be mad to miss this. Such mouthwatering strawberries..😋

  • Anyone know any that are open tomorrow? I've got the day off work and would love to take the kids.

    • +2

Pick your own strawberries should be open in Bullsbrook, they’ve been open for a couple of weeks 7 days a week and the strawberries are very good!

  • +2

I bought a box of pins the other day. When i got it home and opened it and it was full of strawberries!

    • Wow what a bargain!

  • -1

The location is north of Perth far from Melbourne. Not for me.

  • I came here for the needle comments :o

      That's a poor joke…

Just imagine, you earn good money, something happens and you loose 70% of your income.

You don't have any money, you cannot provide for your family.

Your kids might go to a private school, you have to take them out.

I love joking but in this case, very poor to joke about it.

All hail tanastra, (strawberry) field reporter on the scene :)

    • Cheer mate :)

Oops. how do i unchecked this “associated “ check box ? I just accidentally pressed it on my iPhone …

  • +1

Seems a bit pricier than others. I've found quite a few places around Wanneroo doing 3kg boxes, either picked or pick your own, for $8

  • Bugger. Need this in Vic…

  • Can you eat while you pick as well?

    • No. The strawberry 🍓 police will be watching you

    • I had a competition with my kids to find biggest ones and ate them afterwards, so I ate about 6 big ones and totally filled up . The place were so quiet with only about 30 of customers were there and 2 sales ladies in the tent so that's why I posted this event Just to help.

  • +1

We all should buy the strawberries to show your support to our farmers - just imagine what if there is no more strawberry next year

    Any bargains on sewing needles?

  • Are they open for picking on weekdays? Thinking of Thursday. Any contact details?

    • They should be open weekdays too Although it’s “formally” busy in the weekend . Thanks
