  • I have global knives in need of a sharpening. Am i better buying this or paying someone to do it? 0 experience in sharpening a good knife. Dont want to wreck them.

    • Are you in Melbourne?

      • Nope - ACT

Get yourself a Minosharp or Spyderco.

Easy to use, won't damage and gets them razor sharp.

    • when u bought JP knives, why not purchase some good JP whetstones. sharpen them like a Samurai.

Different grades for different needs. u can learn how to do it from utube.

i've been using it for 2 years, much better and sharper than any other Sharpener ever could.

      • Anyone know of a good deal on a set of whetstones?

        • i bought them when i traveled to JP. different prices depends on your budget and needs.

they are authentic and much cheaper than from bloody middle-men.

        • Also interested in whetstones, if anyone can recommend a good brand/set

  • These systems tend to chip my knife. Beware of running your expensive knives over this.

For those with Wusthof knives, there is a free sharpening service available in Australia. You have to send them away but they do a good job and it doesn't take too long. I find this is really only necessary when you need a new edge. Details here: https://www.wuesthof.com/australia/retailer-and-service/mail…

  • Many of these type of sharpeners come from the same factory. This one here is the same as the Wolstead here, at half the price.

As Scab mentioned above - the Minosharp, which is similar to the anolon sharpener, utilise a wheel type system. Though the problem with these is that the ceramic discs can separate from the plastic axle. That said, when I experienced this, anolon simply sent me a new one.

If you're not fastidious about your knives then these things work fine.

    • how would the Ikea equivalents compare? I feel like they don't really do too much. Same design, fill with water and grind on ceramic discs.

      Referring to this one: https://m.ikea.com/au/en/catalog/products/art/30289170/

      • Same principle weird design. Do you have one?

        • It does…I don't think it does that much

          • @chillipaste: The finer stone seems to work the best on these. You'd need a stone to sharpen a blunt knife.

    • Just received mine in the mail today… I followed the instructions but my knives don't seem too much sharper?!

Any tips on what I should be doing? The instructions say "4 to 6 strokes" on each slot, depending on how worn the blade is. But they don't talk about the pressure to apply. I tried with no pressure at first, just the weight of the knife. Then a little more downward force. But still, not too happy with the results.

  • "You can cancel it anytime(amazon.com.au) and your trial will still be valid for the full 30 days."

Are you sure? I noticed in a Choice comparison I read yesterday of eBay Plus, Amazon Prime and Shipster, the only one they mentioned as having that feature was eBay Plus.

    • Yes pretty sure unless they have changed anything recently?

      • Can you please advise, how much pressure should I be applying when sharpening knives with this tool?

I just received mine today, have put several knives through it gently with 4 to 6 passes, and I'm very disappointed with the results.

        • Hi clandestino,

Sorry to hear that the item didn't come up to your expectations. I don't own a set myself so I don't know but I am passing your feedback on to the Store Rep to see if they can help. Will let you know once I hear back (Will be after 6th Oct due to holidays in China).

        • Hi clandestino,

I have spoken with the Rep, please PM me your email address with order number and they will get in touch with you to address your concern.

  • The knife sharpening fiends say that you will never get to razor sharp, mirror-edge without stropping.
