        • Same. Especially when amex is devaluing its points next April

I topped up my opal at Rhodes News, on the ground floor of the shopping centre. No surcharge either :)

  • +7

Just a warning here you might want to take a screenshot of the merchant on shopsmall map before you spend $20 there. I spent $20 at a restaurant thought I was fine as it was on the map. The next day Amex removed the merchant from the map and I live chat with Amex they told me to upload screenshot for proof of the merchant was on the map.

Myki top up success at Racecourse Lucky Lotto and News (the one co-located with Woolworths Newmarket). 3% surcharge which got rounded up to $2 for $60 to-up (3 cards). Got the emails straight away.

Newmarket Newsagency doesn't do Myki top ups at all.

    • I can confirm that Racecource Lucky Lotto does Myki top-ups with a 3% surcharge. I went in today before lunch time and the gentleman that served me had no issue with me using multiple amex cards and myki cards.

  • If there are multiple same-name stores in the State for the same brand, does each store location count as a unique shop? They are listed in the map / data scrape as being different sites, so should be ok to hit up each one?

      Nevermind, chat helped me :

      Correct

  • I play safe today. Called 3 merchants on shopsmall map before I headed over and none of them accepted Amex. Saved me a trip.

    • +1

I’ve had some bad experiences this year. Seems to be a campaign going downhill rapidly.

      • Amex has enough cardholders now so they don't care about customer satisfaction anymore. The overall Amex is a piece of junk.

    • can u still pay and then request amex for a statement credit?

      • Then it is outside the Amex pRomo t&c they will tell you to get lost.

        • In previous years, they are usually very good and credit you. What is the name of the restaurant that was removed?? Is it in thyzdik's map?? I suggest trying online chat again.

      • Sure you can still pay and then request amex for a statement credit.
The question is what will be the Amex response. Good luck!

  • Went somewhere listed on the map, but they didn't accept amex. Where do you go to select the amex live chat from? I can see on the contact us page in my account, it says live chat is "available 24/7", but don't see an actual link to it. Can someone please direct me to where it is? Thanks

    • Never mind, its shown up now. Thanks

No issues with Myki top up here.

Daily News 452 Little Collins St Melbourne

Went around lunchtime, it was very quiet!

The guy only allowed me to do 10 cards.

      Any surcharge?

      • None

    • +1

      Only 10 cards?

  • Anyone here find it difficult to load the shop small map? I have been trying for days and it won't load!

    • +1

Yes many problems. Sometimes works other times not. Sometimes works in chrome sometimes firefox.
I have used this link put up by someone earlier in this thread and has worked for me.
      https://maps.americanexpress.com/en-AU/maps?country=AU&near=…
Alternatively use the alphabetical listing provided on excel earlier in this thread.

      • Thanks! The excel file deserved a new thread!!! : )

Just an update. I've been putting the changes in daily to the wiki and maps (Myki/Opal) but here is latest tables as of 16/11. Also note if you open up the map with your mobile, it will add it as a layer in Google Maps so you can just navigate to the closest one to you. Keep up the comments with success/failure.

Allied Mart only allowed 2 transactions.
Lucky Charm Pavilion only allowed 2 transactions.

City Mart at 614 George St had no surcharge and allowed all transactions I asked for. Emails received.

      • The map location for Allied Mart 379 Pitt is named as City Mart 525 George St. This needs to be fixed.

OK, good pickup. I was creating the map by name, address and suburb using maps but seems to be throwing things in the wrong place so now only mapping based on address and suburb. All fixed now.

      • City Mart at 614 George St had no surcharge and allowed all transactions I asked for. Emails received.

City Mart or City Convenience? Google and the data from last year say City Convenience.

        • +1

City Mart. Emails received as "City Mart 614".

      • 525 George st said machine not working :(

    • does recharge at 3 different The Lucky Charms store entitle to $10 cashback for each store?

      • Yes.

    • Railway hotel on chapel street in winsdor worked , no surcharge for myki.

    • +1

Stanhope Gardens Newsagency, in the shopping centre near Kmart, 2.5% surcharge, so 50c. Used 15 cards. The guy was very efficient. This morning.

  • Fastway Convenience - did 6 cards at one go for Opal Top up, no issues at all. Emails received

  • Meadowbank Newsagency next to Meadowbank station 5 cards with no surcharge. If you have many cards please go on the weekend.

  • Should Westpac branded AMEX work ? I used it for 2 Opal top-ups at 2 places listed and didn't receive email confirmations i.e. at Allied Mart and City Mart 525. Previously I received email notifications for another AMEX card used at these 2 places.

    • +2

Yes, as long as you enrolled/saved the card to the offer.

      • what does one do when the confirmations don't come through ?

        • Contact Amex …

        • +1

Post on ozbargain first, then contact amex

    • I received email for Westpac branded card for transaction at City Mart 614 George St.

It appears Amex has added some extra shops to the map after shop small started so it may be worthwhile rechecking the map again if you haven't done so in a while in case any new merchants have appeared last minute. I reached out to thydzik and he helped me do a new scrape last night.

Here's the link to help those who use the spreadsheet

    • +1

They removed a few shops near where I live even I have called and confirmed they accept Amex. Dodgy Amex

      • Yep same here as well, they removed a shop that I have been going to. It was still there yesterday. Will try today and see what happens. If no credit is honoured, then I will contact customer support since I've got a screenshot of the map previously and the statement credit emails.

        • Okay, so I ended up getting the email for the shop that has been removed from the map. So it seems safe to do it for removed listings.

          • @ronnknee: You are lucky. They asked me to post screenshot otherwise no proof no $10 statement credit.

            • +1

@wtfnodeal: The system Amex have in place is that they email each merchant who participated the previous year and if they do not reply they are considered to be in and on the map accordingly.
              Just like MY HEALTH.
Once a complaint is received then they supposedly adjust the map.
Just went through the process…operator said thanks very much and that was it.
Insisted on supervisor and of course $10 immediately granted.

              • +1

@IanC: I did insist credit $10 to my credit card but the live chat guy called Brian insisted no screenshot no $10 credit. They won't update the map trust me. There was a shop on the map that I went there 2 weeks ago didn't accept Amex and I complained to Amex through live chat. That shop is still on the map. LOL they are hopeless.

                • @wtfnodeal: LOL.

You MUST RING and ask for a supervisor..
Several years ago when they changed the Virgin Free flight to $200 credit I did not receive notification.
Discussed the matter with a supervisor and immediately credited a large number of points in compensation.
If you strike a difficult operator just ring back and try someone else or ask for a complaint to be lodged and insist on a case number
Tell them they have not removed the merchant and are misleading 130000 people despite being made aware of the error

    • Thanks mate and thanks to thydzik. I like using the spreadsheet.

  • +2

Went to 452 Little Collins St Melb this afternoon but closed so will go Monday.
So headed to Prahran Central Pharmacy, no issue at all topping MyKi with 3 different cards, seemed like they had done it before.
Go across the road to Prahran Convenience, different story. Would only let me top up $20 once only, said something about Fair Use Policy… all good, I come back another day and do another card

Yet to try my local IGA, that's on the Shop Small Map that does MyKi topup but unsure if they allow Amex to top up MyKi, will try tomorrow.

I only have 3 amex (I'm a novice) so topping up over next couple weeks shouldn't be too much of a hassle.

    • Can confirm that Prahan Convenience is extremely stingy with this - make sure you top up on different Mykis.

    • Don't bother with Prahran Convenience if you want to use more than 1 card. They have a made up rule against it. Just down the road Prahran Central Pharmacy had no issue at all.

      • I have 2 more Amex to use at Prahran Convenience but think I'll just forget about them. The guy is cranky and not welcoming at all.

Armadale Mini Mart (IGA Exress) Corner of High St and Orrong Road, accept Amex for MyKi topups, no issues, no surcharge

  • Will Amex manually honour a Shop Small if the only thing you have to go by is the confirmation email? Been a couple of weeks now since and I still haven't received the cashback yet (all others have come through, even a couple that I didn't get emails for).

  • Got confirmation email for everything except Roy Young Chatswood which trades as Pharmacy 4 Less. Should I be worried? It still shows up as Roy Young in the transactions.

  • +1

City Mart 525 accepts only one Amex card per person. I do recharge at other stores then come back half an hour later. The staff remembers my face and does not accept second recharge. He says it is instruction from owner. I wonder if the business loses money when accepting Amex for Opal recharge. The store is empty with no other customer at both times.

    • When i have 2 cards on my hand. They say machine not working. My mate then go in with 1 card he did it without any issue or question.

  • I only have one Amex, if I would use it for Myki top up do I have to go to 5 different shops and top up $20 each to get $50 profit? Or can I use the same shop several times in different transactions?

    • +2

      The first option.

    • +1

What danielh said. And only if you registered your Amex

Sydney Opal top up: No surchage. Both are 2 mins from train station.

  • Bay Mini Mart in north sydney wanted a 3-5 dollar surcharge on a 20 dollar opal topup. Too high for me so I left.

Fastway on the other hand didn't charge any surcharge (the one near the station/opposite Zurich insurance)

    • I got $1.50 surcharge the other day and was pissed with that. I read earlier that someone got no surcharge.

    • whereabouts is the newsagency in mlc food court? i couldn't find it. thanks!

  • Topped up a single Myki card at The Summit Convenience on 12/11/2018 successfully. No surcharge!

  • Does anyone know which charities are on the list this year?

    • +2

Hey, I saw RSPCA Tasmania listed so I donated $20 online and it triggered the $10 back. I feel like some of the other RSPCAs might also be covered but not sure. I've not been able to find any other charities unfortunately.

      https://www.rspcatas.org.au/

      edit:

I've also just donated $20 online to http://www.pbcf.org.au which triggered the email.

I used the map and typed in "foundation" and there seem to be a few others but not sure if they have online donation options.

  • Confirming VICTORIA HARBOUR PHARMACY & NEWS (Docklands) for Myki top-ups.

It was amazing! They had a separate counter just for Myki top-ups!

They were so helpful and kind! Highly recommend going down there, even if it is out of your way!

    • How many cards did you use? I'm planning to go there tomorrow or weekend..

      • +1

I topped up with one card, staff member was terse so maybe jakxon was lucky?

I think small topups are okay and consider how busy they are when you go. People with large numbers of cards are causing some retailers to take themselves off the shop small program due to the disruption on the business.

        • thanks, i will go different days.. hope to use 4 cards..

      • +1

I went around 3:30pm. I do suggest always go at non busy times.

I have 12 cards. She told me someone came in with 15 cards last week. lol.

        • oh.. and no surcharge for 12 cards at once ?

  • First time ive ever bern to a pharmacy to top up myki card

Got told since they dpnt make any money cash only unlrss i buy something in-store

    Thats nasty

    • +1

Tell them to not do Myki top ups then! Report them to PTV or whomever looks after Myki outlets.

Shout out to Pinewood Newsagency. Went there around midday (pretty quiet) and they were VERY accommodating. Said I was wanting to top up Myki and they anticipated I was looking to do the AMEX Shop Small on multiple cards. No effort required and no surcharge… Too easy!

  • +2

For those people eat at Din Tai Fun in Sydney, be warn they don't allow split bill. But if you come with several persons and with multiple cards, split your orders on multiple order forms. Saw a couple came together and order each on a separate form, but share their dishes together. Wasn't fully understand until they each pay by a separate Amex later. Smart move.

    • They dont do itemised or split bills?

      • They literally said in their comment that they don't do split bills …

        • Thats a bit of a hard one.

          Itemised most places dont, understandelby

I would expect a straight split down the middle fine.

But wouldnt be surprised for a declibe for $20 x 5

          • @Samsungnote10: Some places (like Din Tai Fung) literally don't have the function to split bills. Others do by using for example, CBA's Albert. Have you worked in retail before? It seems like from your limited knowledge, you haven't …

I'm all for splitting bills, but it's very time consuming from the retailer's side, as someone who has worked in retail

            • @kerfuffle: I work hospitality, so yes im more than qualified to answer.

From your limited knowledge its obvious that ive never come across a system that cant split.

You do know that din tai fung is not a retail outlet? I suspect not

              • @Samsungnote10: As someone who i) is Chinese and ii) last ate Din Tai Fung six years ago had an allergy reaction to peanut sauce in their Spicy Seasame Noodles, which is why I don't eat Din Tai Fung any more, I'm aware what Din Tai Fung is, thanks.

                • @kerfuffle: Then you should know that retail and hosptilaity are different.
Have often do you split a retail sale?
