1060's are the best value for performance at the moment. Really a great deal.

You could pick up a refurbed dell pc and smack this in for a cheap mid setting gaming rig just under $500

    • +4

This card would not fit into a Dell optiplex refurb right?

    • +5

Most deals here recently are SFF where they have a very low wattage power supply and unable to power a 1060. 1050tis that are low profile are probably the most suitable.

    • +4

A GTX 1060 is more than "mid setting gaming" even with a i5 you should be able run most games in high or ultra at 1080p

      • +8

He means mid-tier, not literal in-game medium settings. 1060 is a mid tier gaming card.

        • +2

Yeah of course. Sorry, medium graphics settings will vary a great deal from game to game, the resolution you are at, and what frames per second you are aiming for.

I should have been clearer, sorry guys. x

  • +2

    :(

    Needed a gift
    Has GTX660 (2 Gbyte) - just bought a RX570 (8Gbyte) - should have bought this.

    • +6

Is this $100 better than rx570 8gb? At $199 i would have thought the rx570 is better value.

    • Better performance out of any of these cards than Sainter_Team 2018…

      • +2

LOL - you cheeky sod - Better performance from an Etch-a-Sketch than Sainter_Team in 2018.

But our game plan of Spin - run - Dance - Draw a Unicorn will work in 2019 - I swear it!

    • +4

That was only $199 though right? this card would be like 20% better or something, if that. not worth 50% more money. So be happy with your purchase, that will last well for ages.

  • A lot of second hand 1070s going for a similar price on ebay, if you're happy dealing with used gear

    • 1070s for 315? Have they dropped that much, last time I checked they were 400-450~

      • I saw one for 310+10 delivery. It was either a mining card/scam though.

        • 1070s are generally $400. Used 1060s go between 200-250. Recently purchased a used 980 for $250 myself. This is a great deal for a 1060.

        • @Forgetfulfoot: Yeah I saw the ones that guy mentioned but they're all scams. New account with almost no reviews, only one stock photo and no description whatsoever of the product.

    • No. There might be a few auctions that kick off at that price, but 1070s are still selling from $390-450, and after the impending RTX series flop prices will bounce back higher.

      • surprised 1070s still go for that much 2nd hand. Accidentally ordered 2x 1070s at the end of 2016 @ $505. Offered to let someone buy the spare for $505 brand new with receipt with no takers.

those are prices before using any 5/10/15% discount codes, like you would as per the deals listed in ozbargain. Quite a few in the $350-360 range before any discounts

  • I know this is a dumb question but for those who know about graphics card and pricing, how much 2060 is likely to cost (at least)? I want to do a build now and don't mind waiting, I also don't game much. I'm planning to get a 1060 6GB or 2060 purely for video editing and some future proofing only. Thoughts?

    • +1

No one can say exactly; but there's a very close approximation. Look at the last series xx60 card and add $100-150 to the RRP. "Founders edition" is a joke and consists of an early adopter's tax yet is vulnerable to supply/demand like any other goods, you can bet your bottom dollar nVidia will be jacking the price up but crypto demand/profitability will determine whether it retails for close to the RRP or at a significantly inflated price. If you're purely doing video editing and don't care about ray-tracing, buying Pascal will serve you better.

      • +1

Thanks! I think you're spot on on the inflated price, even when the mining hype seems to have cooled down a bit. Pascal it is ;)

      • I thought they were not adding Ray Tracing chips to anything below 2070s, so 2060s. They shouldn't cost that much more than the 1060s at launch. A NVIDIA rep stated their were two types of NVIDIA cards coming, those with RT and those without.

    • +1

Video transcoding relies on the CPU, not the GPU. There are ways of using the GPU but it isn't as efficient in terms of compression.

      • 100% - I budgeted more for the CPU, hence the compromise on GPU :D but looks like this is a good deal for an average user like me, thanks!

      • not entirely true.. I use the my GTX 1060 to encode 1080p video down to 720p HEVC and it literally takes just a few minutes per hour of source video.

encoding with the CPU may give a much cleaner output and take hours longer, but frankly my eyes can't tell the difference when I'm watching it.

        • +1

CPU encoders are highly tunable though, that is, you can choose how fast they run. If you're not concerned so much with output quality or compression ratio, you can just lower the CPU encoder's search complexity to make it run very fast.

        • @Yumi: Agreed. If quality and compression are valuable to you for the encode, then stick to the CPU.

  • -6

I honestly don't think this is a good deal for the average user when a card that performs almost as well in games is available for $100 less. If you place that much value on an Nvidia-specific feature, okay sure, but if you're "just playing games" go buy that 570.

    • +4

Completely agree with you mate, but I reckon if someone is looking to buy a 1060 then this is a decent deal.

    • +8

I agree with you in terms of the value of the card.

GTX 1060 6GB delivers on average 10-20% better performance than RX570 (depending on games, and can vary between -20% to 30%), but charges 50% higher price premium. The RX570 is definitely better in terms of value proposition.

Having said that, it is the lowest price available for the card, so I guess it is a fairly good deal for the card specifically.

      • +1

DX12 games has the RX 570 matching the 1060 6GB though. I think in the long term 570/580 is the better choice.

    • +1

Also AMD have a history of squeezing more performance from a card as time goes on, NVIDIA either release drivers that work effectively from the start and AMD doesn't or NVIDIA don't care about their GPUs once time passes.

The Vega 64 now clearly outclasses the 1080 despite on release them trading blows, took a year of driver optimisations from AMD for that to happen.

    • +7

I dont see this as warranting a neg? Voting is for if it's the cheapest price not if you want to swing AMD in front of someone's face…
I don't neg an iPhone deal because a Galaxy phone may be cheaper and perform better? Don't see people negging a Ps4 Pro vs Xbox one X.

Sure if it was cheap powerbanks and headphones where it's a grey area on who makes them and what's different, but NVidia vs AMD does not change if this 1060 in question is the cheapest price or not.

      • Some people just need to understand how the voting system should actually work instead of using it purely as an agreeing/disagreeing mechanism.

      • This isn't a brand issue, since GPUs are usually (not always) bought as a primarily commodity item based on their price and performance. Most people don't actually care about CUDA or FreeSync and GSync when it comes to using their card. For almost every person viewing this post, it is not the best deal available for a new graphics card at this performance tier, and it's not even close.

        Negative Vote

        Purpose:

        • To let others know about issues with the deal, merchant or product.

Appropriate uses of negative vote (my vote/comment)

        • Cheaper price elsewhere; Mention store or URL and price making sure to include shipping.

Inappropriate uses of negative vote (none of these are my vote/comment)

        • No explanation of the vote
        • Incorrect or missing information in title or description
        • An issue with the poster.
        • Expired/Out of Stock.
        • Should have been posted in forums.
        • Pointing out that the product is a grey import.
        • Requiring Facebook/Twitter/G+ to access deal

This deal is getting upvotes based on Nvidia's brand recognition, so people are seeing that it's a good price for a GTX 1060 and thinking that it's therefore a good deal. That's not true for 90%+ of the people upvoting this or viewing this because a significantly better value option with only marginally less gaming performance is available. My vote is in line with the OzBargain voting guidelines which you're touting and I'm extremely disappointed to see this response.

        • +1

You're Extremely disappointed that someone called you out for pushing a personal opinion as an "issues with the deal"?
Then backing that with assumptions of "Most people don't actually care about CUDA or FreeSync and GSync"…

        • -2

          @camshandez:

Referring to benchmark data is not pushing a personal opinion. My assumption regarding non-core features is grounded in reality: if you were to sample 1000 random Australian computer users with a GTX or RX card, you would certainly find that less than 20% of them are consistently using any of those 3 features.

I encourage you to genuinely consider views which differ from your own. I personally own and use a GTX 1060 in my PC, not an RX 570, but all the data suggests that most readers here would get (would have gotten, the deal's expired now) significantly better value for money and similar performance by buying a $200 RX 570 8GB than a $300 GTX 1060 6GB. That's what OzBargain is all about - getting a better deal.

        • @MHLoppy: I understand your perspective and see your point but while the RX 570 8GB may have been better value, this was still a great price for a 1060 6GB for people specifically interested in Nvidia for whichever reason (e.g. power consumption, G-sync, slightly better performance). This is ozbargain.com.au, not ozvalue.com.au. :)

    • I support your neg if only to inform people of the better option, though technically it's invalid, like negging an apple product for being a ripoff compared with products the more tech savvy among us purchase.

It's worth mentioning that if you want to run Cemu or PCSX2 (console emulators with no vulkan support) then this card is much better.

  • got excited for a second, thought it was a gtx1080 for $313…

    • +5

      Ha!

These cards are 2 years old now, how has there not been a refresh yet.

I have been holding off to buy a new GPU because of the age of it.
