or if u wait 8 months u can have the ipad 2 at the same prices. :)

    • +2

wow the ipad trolls are up early this morning…. Why not a generic comment instead. PS3 with new patches PS4, Galaxy tab, android 4, HTC desireed plus plus, Iphone 44 and so on.

      • +2

there literally are rumours that they are planning to release a new ipad in september.
not like an ipad 3, but more an 'ipad 2gs', just a little update.
        he no trolling.

        • +5

Yes he is, the point being every product has "rumours" like ps3 galaxy tab etc. So why even make the comment. As for the discount, that will totally depend on how the stock is managed, there is no rumour that can guarantee that like our friend has stated

More to the point is whether the new features of the ipad2 are worth more to someone than the saving here. 2X speed, Camera's the cool cover/stand that clips on magnetically.

        • -2

Got an email from Apple, apparently iPad2 coming out March 25.
          http://www.apple.com/au/ipad/features/

Dual core A5 chip, 9x faster, two cameras…

        • -1

I really doubt Apple will release an ipad 3 or whatever in september, therse rumors are baseless. Apple has incredible secrecy surrounding product launches.

        • -1

O.o whats with the neg on my comment??? Simply stating the facts from an official Apple email/website.
          No opinions expressed.

      • +5

mate its a known fact that there is a new ipad goignt o be out in september/oct. most probably with the retina display. Oh n by the way. im an android person. not apple. and keeping up with the time is what i do. Sorry if that bothers you.

        • -1

New iPad is out mid of this month in the US. They just had a press release with Steve Jobs.

        • -4

yes mate, just refering to the next one. which will have the retina display

        • +4

"Known fact"? Rumours sure, but no facts that I've heard of. What's your source?

        • -1

I think Ipad has different display tech? LED back-lit display instead of retina display? My opinion.

        • +5

Rumour mill is that new iPhone will be out September, not iPad. Apple are not going to release a new one in 6 months. That would piss off too many people. Today's iPad is like the iPhone 3G to 3GS. Bump in speed, a few new things, that's about it. It's an 'interim' update. Considering Apple just released the iPad in Russia and some other countries, the chances of them replacing this in September are minimal (and the cost of a "retina display" this side, is still prohibitive at this price point). I think you need new sources:)

        • +2

I've read some rumours about ipad 3/2.5 in September, but look at the trend.
          iPhone 2G - released June 2007
          iPhone 3G - released July 2008
          iPhone 3GS - released June 2009
          iPhone 4 - released June 2010
The original ipad moved about 15million ($9.5billion) units since release in April 2010 according to Jobs' presso. If Apple release another ipad in September after only 6months, they'd lose out on a lot of money (billions). And in the end it all comes down to profits.

        • +1

iPhone 4's retina display allows for twice the dimensions of the iPhone3gs (320x480 to 640x960).

Putting a retina display on the iPad would result in the dimensions going from 1024x768 resolution to 2048x1536 resolution. I'd like you to find a mobile gpu capable of pumping out that much graphics without sucking away battery life. A resolution so high it's even higher than most monitors, even higher than 1080p (Full HD), and far beyond what 99% of games would bother outputting.

The rumors you speak of was speculation that Apple's hardware suppliers could not keep up with manufacturing demands for the new device, and that Apple would instead announce a hardware upgrade to the existing iPad, then launch the iPad2 later on in the year. This has since been proven false.

I wouldn't ignore a possible hardware upgrade, but there's no way you'll see a "upgrade" to a retina display within the year. If anything, it'll be a completely new model.

        • Sorry, how does Apple releasing another iPad soon lose them money? Either way, Apple wins. It's like the IP4 leak. People staved off the 3GS for the tail end, but wound up buying an IP4 for more in the end.

I highly doubt there will be another one in September, the rumours are way too sketchy and are coming from completely different sources than the ones that hinted at iPad 2 back in Q2 2010.

        • nevermind, comment unpublished

        • @Strand0410 Of course they'd lose money, not literally make losses but i mean lose out in terms of the opportunity cost.

    • -2

iPad 2 is launched internationally on March the 25th. Time flies when you're ignorant.

  • +6

I told my Dad he should just wait another month or so. =="

  • These are the prices suitable for Australia…
Apple should make Australian pricing as same as in US.

    • Keep in mind we gotta pay GST so our prices are essentially the same once you add tax on in america (not always depending on where or how u purchase it in america, but generally you do). Apple are pretty reasonable with pricing, i'm going to america soon but i'm going to purchase a MBP here and get my GST refund, works out to be almost the same as buying in usa.

      • +2

iPad 16G is priced US$499. Let's say it's AUD 499, plus 49.9 GST, So it's AUD 548.9, still cheaper than the 629 RRP.

        • Just add the US State and local sales Tax to the price as well. So depending on where you buy in the US the price increases by up to 10% (eg California average rate is 9%) so US price is $540 so Aust ex GST (629 - 63) = $566, which if traveling might be worth it, but if you buy before you go, you can load it with stuff you can use on the trip….

And the Australian prices for ipad2 haven't been announced yet.

        • +1

@ozpete: don't forget if travelling overseas, you can also then claim the GST back via the Tourist Refund Scheme (TRS). Just make sure you take the iPad and box/adaptors along with the receipt, and claim it back. Makes it cheaper than using it in the USA (you do need to purchase it within the 30 days prior to departure though).

        • -1

mate, the price is not determined only by that. it's completely different market. you can always buy the US version online though (or by any other means). think about labour cost for once.

        • Preaching to the choir. But it's not going to happen.

GST here + retail tax in the US closes the margin significantly, if you take into account high tariffs and population base, it makes even more sense.

And the AUD/USD conversion is unusually high, it can drop like a stone any time. Apple is international, they'll price it higher so they can ride it through the potential 60 US cent trough years.

        • Hey it's not as clear cut as that (as ozpete suggested).

I was going to the US, saw the prices over there and I'd wait until I get there to pick one up. I forgot to add the US sales tax (in CA).

The US cost of my 16GB + WIFI + 3G + CA sales tax was the same cost of getting an Australian one and having the GST refunded via the TRS. Plus I had to get an Australian power plug (only a few bucks though). Unsure about warranty either.

In hindsight I wish I had have bought locally, then I could have configured it all before the trip.

Granted - if you're not flying OS you won't be able to use the TRS.

    • Agree, AUD now worth more than USD.

  • +12

Who uses flash or usbs these days? Errrrrrrrrrr everyone

  • +3

Let me premise by saying that I have nothing against the general uses of an ipad, and I will +ve this deal, but who is going to use an ipad for a camera? or for video chat? I know a heap of people with netbooks/laptops/web cams and maybe one/two that have ever used it for video chat. Same goes for people who can do it with their phones. And I can't imagine a much more awkwardly designed piece of equipment for taking a photo.

    • +1

Just like a huge camera :D

    • I use my Netbook for Skype, because it has a camera, and I can carry it everywhere around my house.
So a front camera is nice to have, if you use skype.
Front camera… dont know, i cannot see myself at a birthday party taking pictures with the Ipad.

    • I know a heap of people with netbooks/laptops/web cams and maybe one/two that have ever used it for video chat.

it's great for those that need to travel a lot and are away from there families a lot of the time… I know lots of people that use it daily to catch up with their kids that they only get to see on weekends due to work…

Personally, I won't vote for this as a +ve because this is now the standard price for the old models, so it's not really a discount…

  • The speed increase and weight drop sound good on the new model, however the only thing that could get me to upgrade my iPad is a larger screen.

This price drop is good for those who don't need the cameras which would be most people.

    • -2

So you want an iPad with a 21 inch screen? You are crazy.

Unlikely they will come out with a bigger screen, a higher resolution is possible in the future. But who cares, it will not make much difference.

      • i would like a full bleed A3 display. would be very handy for presentations and proposals.

seeing things full size is very desirable

      • I'm not crazy, I want less bezel. An iPod screen could go up about 2 inches and not get any larger physically. Why are you commenting if you don't care?

Right now the iPad does everything I need it too, I'm happy with the resolution, I don't need a camera, it runs pretty fast as it is and I could give or take a magnetic cover.

  • Anyone think Apple resellers will beat these prices? JB hifi currently sells the 16GB wifi version for $32 below the original RRP…

    • +1

Personally I wouldn't be rushing into this old model deal yet, as it's value must be taken into account against the price of the new model. The original ipad prices were set when the Aussie dollar was set around the 80c mark.

    • how much off is it from the original RRP last july?

  • -5

I think this bargain is quite okay and I do agree with the rep's comment, however the rep make himself sound like a smart arse which draws me back. How can anyone in the service industry be so rude and sarcastic to his potential customers? totally unacceptable!

    • +12

      Lol what rep?

      • +1

haha I was thinking the same thing.

      • lol, hes dissing our mod :P

    • of course. lol.

    • Lol what are you talking about?

  • +1

hmm i personally would wait, sis got a ipad
    its great
but the lack of camera is annoying,
would have been awesome to video skype (she from hk)
    but voice skype is ok

    • yeah no camera is a big turnoff, although people have modded theirs to attach external (chinese) cameras

  • I have a 1st Gen and there is nothing in the 2nd Gen that would prompt me to upgrade. Definitely buy @ JB or somewhere that will better Apple's pricing.

  • +3

You may possibly save an additional $10 using an EPP link..

    http://store.apple.com.au/epp/XXX

where XXX is the big bank/technology company you work for …

Anyway.. I just checked out the US pricing … new models start at $499

    http://store.apple.com/us/browse/home/shop_ipad/family/ipad/…

The EPP pricing in the US is showing it at $489 for the new ipad2 16 model.

Given the 2 cameras, better processors, thinner/lighter etc.. probably best to get one from the US!

    • thanks for that great tip.

      • I'd then take the EPP pricing into JB and get them to match or beat! :) JB will beat most Apple pricings. As I am a teacher, however am on maternity leave at the moment, I would go in there with the Education price, 10% off, and they always matched or beat it. Something to note though, there are no Education prices for iPads, at least with the 1st Gen there wasn't.

        • -1

          iPad Edu price 16GB $440

  • +2

The refurbished prices in the Apple store are now even more expensive :-). They should update this soon and then you should get a iPad 1 even cheaper …

    • yeah..thats a good idea and im going overseas end of this month..will be more saving with GST return

      • should they even charge GST on refurbs??? the GST on that item has already been paid…

        • Not really, if the customer returned the item for a refund - original GST refunded. If returned for an exchange, then the original GST is carried over to the exchanged one. Does that make sense?

    • It looks like the refurb prices will starting at 389 AUD for the 16GB WIFI … :-) (it is in the Apple store already … but marked as sold out). . Looks like Apple adjusts the pricing to the exchange rate and we also should see the iPad2 around the 550 - 580 mark (personal opinion).

  • By the way, IPAD 2 has been confirmed to be released on 11 March 2011 (US Release)

Details can be found at the bottom of the official IPAD page
    http://www.apple.com/ipad/features/

    Australia's release date is 25 March 2011

    • Where did you find Australian release?

      • +2

It was said during the keynote.

This is my first iDevice purchase at the launch date. Can anyone tell what is it like? Not as crazy as when i4 was release right.. line ups etc..

I'm thinking just rock up a JB on the 25th. Is that ok?

        • +1

Never underestimate Apple launches!! :) However, you'll be fine if you buy it somewhere other than an Apple store. I picked up my 1st Gen from DJ's walking in and out within 10 minutes, while others lined up at Apple stores for hours. Depends how you feel about launches, some people love to line up at Apple to absorb the hype and/or experience the excitement!

          it's white…
          33% thinner and 15% lighter

  • Can one view non purchased ebooks on the ipad (said the noob)?

    • yes .pdf, .epub all work

      • Just get the app GoodReader for PDF's and Stanza for epubs.

  • I just bought 16gb wifi with original case.

    • +2

I am planning to travel overseas in 2 weeks, then I can claim the gst :)

      • Just be aware that if you're going to bring the iPad back into Australia at any time that it counts towards your tax free allowance.

  • any chance of price match elsewhere??

  • What would be a resonable price be for a as new 16gb wifi now there dropped in price…

  • +3

why would you buy original ipad? Im not even impressed with iPad 2 to be honest.

    • +4

      it's all about the apps…

  • Does Ipad has retina display? I though LED back-lit display?

    • -1

      Does Ipad has retina display?

No, you have to wait for the iPad 3 in September for that…

  • what's with the moneybackco reference? they do NOT give money back on iPad or iPhone sales.

    • I think they give money back on something else in the store, so it shows the icon.

      • If yr a Velocity member you can get FF points on the Apple store.

  • +3

What's with all the idiots in this thread claiming a new iPad will be released in September? There is absolutely no proof of that at all and would alienate iPad 2 users.

It would be a terrible business move.

    • +5

The fact that Apple never releases its road map for future products leads Apple fans to endlessly speculate about the next release date. Whenever an OzBargain post is made for an Apple product there's at least a few people claiming we shouldn't buy product X because product Y is coming in Z months.

It's just obvious that a new, better, faster and possibly cheaper version is coming. We're talking about computer products here. There'll be a time when the iPad 2 is worth $20 at Cash Converters.

      • iPad 2 for $20… I mean, it's a good price… Do you think Office works would beat it by 5%? If someone can confirm then I'll + the deal…

    • +3

Agreed. In recent years Apple seem to have generally established a pattern of annual product updates.

    • It would be a terrible business move.

      that is just your opinion…

apple are getting more and more competion in the tablet market and need to keep a step ahead… or suffer the same fate as Palm did who were the leaders in smartphones…

      • They also have a lot of competition in the smartphone market and yet they still do well, despite the fact they don't have the best hardware at the moment.
It's unlikely there will be a new ipad in September because they need to 'keep a step ahead'.

      • +2

No more - keep on topic about this being a bargain or not. Discuss iPads future in the forums as much as you like. Thank you.

Note hardly anyone who likes this deal by voting cares to comment… so who are you talking with

  • +3

not sure this is a bargain, its just a price drop because the new model is coming out and they know they won't be selling old models anymore.

i won't negative but i personally don't think this deserves to be on ozBARGAIN

  • +1

Hopefully this drives down the "used" market - currently more expensive used on eBay and Gumtree!

    • +1

Sold my iPad on eBay about six weeks ago, because it was pretty obvious that this was going to happen. I got $520.

  • Do we have an estimate of the price under educational pricing in AU? what about in the US? Given the current currency rate, it may be a better idea to get on shipped from the US.

Also - with the wifi+3G model - if bought in the USA, it is locked to the service provider (AT&T)? Can someone shine some light in this regard?

    Thanks!

    • +1

The WiFi+3G iPad sold in the USA is not carrier-locked.

Given the stronger exchange rate this time around, the initial price discrepancy between original US iPads and Oz iPads (USD499 vs AUD629 for the 16GB WiFi at time of release) should be smaller. I'd guess the base model iPad 2 will hit AUD549-579 at list price.
