Does Coles Chicken Thighs Have a Really Strong, Gamey Taste to You?

Ive tried cooking them a few times (simple pan fry) and they always have a very strong, gamey taste that makes it really hard to eat. Oddly enough, their chicken breast is fine but the thighs just taste really weird.

What are your experiences with coles chicken thighs?

I think you will find that chicken thighs will naturally have a more gamey taste compared to chicken breast, regardless of where you buy them.

As chickens walk around the thigh area obviously works pretty hard while the chicken is standing, walking, running, etc. compared to the breast area which just sits there doing nothing.

I for one absolutely love thigh, and the breast is meh.

Same here. I'm usually a breast man, except when it comes to poultry.

To the tune of Buddy Holly's Oh boy!

Smells like fish, tastes like chicken
You don't know what you been a lickin', oh boy!

    • Its just the coles brand though. Lilydale free range ones seem fine to me (but are way too expensive for me to buy regularly).

      • Have you tried Woolworths or other non-free range?

        • Not for ages. I usually order from coles since it has free delivery…pretty sure woolies doesnt. Local butcher sucks so i dont go there.

        • @Question:

So you're comparing the taste of free range chicken thigh to the taste of non-free range chicken thigh.

Maybe that is the difference, and not the fact that one is Coles branded and the other is a different brand?
They would be using different feed for them, so that will contribute a lot to the taste.

        • @Drew22: Well i guess its possible that free range thighs in general taste OK but non free-range does not. Tried using thighs instead of breast because its supposedly more flavourful but the coles ones at least seem pretty bad.

Have you tried the coles ones specifically?

        • @Question:

I've never had a chicken thigh I didn't like, and I've eaten Coles ones before.

  • It is just Coles Chicken Thighs?

I don't mind gamey meat flavour.. I suppose it's what they tasted like before they were bred to be meatier and grow faster.

    • Its just the coles brand though. Lilydale free range ones seem fine to me (but are way too expensive for me to buy regularly).

      • I dunno… try buying them from the local butcher.. Coles chicken isn't that cheap anyway.

        • The local butcher here is pretty awful.

        • @Question:

Try Aldi, no problems with their chicken.

        • @JB1: Sadly, aldi doesnt deliver :(

        • @Question:

So just to summarise, you're after chicken thigh that doesn't taste gamey, is local and can be delivered to your door?

Not asking for much are you.

        • @Lorindor: I never mentioned "local". What do you mean by local?

        • @Question:

If someone suggested a good local butcher, you probably would have shot that down also.

  • I have 100% faith in Curtis Stone's quality control. From California.

  • Reminds me of why the only chicken dish I will order at a Chinese restaurant is chicken wings.

  • A bit, though I try to dilute the taste by adding lots of spices and flavours to the chicken.

Coles chickens are shot whilst on the wing, using genuine lead shot, so yes, expect them to taste gamey.

Delicious stop complaining Aust chickens best in the world cook and enjoy ok.

  • Maybe they substituted Tasmanian turbo chooks or bin chickens.

I have previously read that MOST/MAYBE ALL SUPERMARKETS use a vinegar wash for all meats chicken etc after they have been on show in their deli cases for 1-3 days,I assume that they would also use the same or something like the wash that is used with their meats to prolong the live of their butchers sliced meats, have a look at their store packaged meat (steak etc)most times it looks like it is painted with clear gloss paint, it is not paint it is the preserve they use so the meat will not turn a greyish colour which makes it look like all the blood has leached out of the meat,

  • I go through kilos and kilos a week, I think a lot of the flavour depends on the batch. Every now and then your going to get a pack that tastes a bit different no matter where you buy.

The deli thighs from woolies are also much cheaper.
