"Select" Surface items being a single 4GB model of the Surface Laptop :(

    • Yeah, not the best selection…

      • +4

Tip-off from another user says the deal starts tomorrow, so the rather sad-looking list of 1 laptop and 11 Xbox games may still be incomplete.

I'm guessing start time is 10AM like all the P-deals on eBay.

        • That probably explains why the T&Cs aren't available yet. Thanks

        • 10:12am and it is only listing the single model

        • +1

          @Piccolo455:

Yeah, at least they reduced the price.

However, all their other laptops and tablets qualify for the 15% off coupon for ebay plus users. If you're not on eBay plus, you can use POINTY for 10% off.

When I see a deal for a “4g ram” laptop, the deal instantly becomes a no-deal to me.

    • +20

      Thanks for letting us know

    • +2

A lot of people don't need any more than that… Yawn

      • They'd be better off not buying a surface then though to be fair. $900 can get you something that will give you far longer life span than this for the kind of person that would only do the occasional email/facebook/pornhub combo.

        • +2

Start with email and it just goes downhill from there…

        • +2

Not with the same slick build HW / form factor, some people would easily pay the premium for thin/light/metal/display etc

        • +1

@spillmill: Buyers beware, The surface book is lined with alcantara fabric which can leave stains that can be hard to wash out. For more heavy usage of the above applications, I'd consider getting something else.

  • +4

There's a Microsoft event in two weeks with Surface product refreshes.

The latest Intel processors are a substantial improvement.

  • +4

wake me when theres a decent deal on surface book 2

    • +14

      Go back to sleep!

  • How do we know if MS will not be going to jack up the price?

    • +1

Not on a 4GB model mate. So 2013…

      • +1

Seriously how much extra will be the material cost on putting in 8GB instead of 4GB, i can imagine it will only be 20 usd extra if not less. It's all about they can charge more for 8GB version.

        • Thank you!!!!

        • @AussieGargain:

Yeah I am the Captain Obvious for today…

        • Yeah I wish there was such option. I can live with 128gb storage but not 4gb ram.

        • While I completely agree this model shouldn't exist, ram prices are insane at the moment so it's certainly more than $20.
But as I said, this line shouldn't even be offered.

  • +5

4gb paired with an i5 and SSD is perfectly fine imo.

    • 4GB isn't a problem for low demanding tasks, I agree. But why not get a cheaper Android tablet for those activities? It seems in a weird position to me, consider its RRP and then compare it against Android and Apple tablets that are designed to work well on those same simple tasks.

      • +7

Because this is perfectly fine for word processing and most other types of basic content creation that you can't reasonably do on a tablet. Tbh I have used flash CS5, Corel draw, acrobat pro and Photoshop on worse specced machines than this. With win 10 and a good SSD it would be perfectly fine for most tasks apart from 3d studio max or gaming. Honestly if I could justify it I would definitely buy one of these, it's a good price.

        • +2

I'm definately fine with 4GB of RAM, I was concered more about the price for what you get, with Word on Android. But I like your points and I prefer Word on Windows.

    • BUT can it run Crysis ?

      • +2

Given its an ten year old game? I'd reckon so.

        • Wrong answer

  • -6

    horrible deal

    • +1

      Better option?

  • I had one of these. 4gb is not even enough to run Chrome. even if you wanna use it for education/uni it is inadequate to have word and websites opened at the same time. Glad I sold this for 1.2k and picked up a surface book 1st gen for 1.5.

    • +5

lmao why make shit up mate? 4GB is plenty for W10, Chrome, Outlook, Excel spreadsheets and more to spare. How do I know? Most of my workplace have 4GB of RAM.

      • +1

Its not making shit up.. Just giving my opinion as a uni student :)
Try doing a research essay with 20 chrome tabs opened and while using word at the same time.
But to adjust the original wording: it is too sluggish to be productive.

Be nice. Downvotes just because someone else offers a different opinion lol.

        • I consider myself a reasonably heavy user of my MacBook pro and when I use this I'm just a bit more conservative with how I run it.

Keep tabs below 10 in chrome. Only have a couple of excels open and outlook and it runs fine.

I actually use it more than my MacBook now.

        • +2

But to adjust the original wording: it is too sluggish to be productive.

For you. I know plenty of people who are very productive on their 4GB machines.

Downvotes just because someone else offers a different opinion lol.

It's because you weren't offering a different opinion, you were assuming everybody uses laptops the same way you do with these statements:

4gb is not even enough to run Chrome.

That broad statement is completely wrong. Chrome runs absolutely fine on a 4GB machine. It may not be fast enough for the way you use it, but for plenty of people, 4GB will absolutely do the job perfectly.

even if you wanna use it for education/uni it is inadequate to have word and websites opened at the same time.

Once again, that broad statement is completely wrong, simply because different people use their computers differently. If you actually described the way you use it like you did in your later post (20+ Chrome windows etc), then it would have qualified your statement and it would have been fine.

If you intend to open 20+ heavy websites in Chrome and switch back and forth with Word frequently, you would want a machine with more RAM. If all you do is "standard" work tasks like open a handful of webpages, read emails, and type a Word doc or three, 4GB is absolutely fine now and for the next ~3 years.

You have to remember that not everybody lives on their computers - some people don't give a crap about computers and simply use it to get work done - after that they shut it off and do things IRL.

        • @eug:
4gb is fine for the next 3 years. Lol.

      • Most of all workplaces across the country

    • If it is too sluggish, you can use Microsoft edge, it is decent.

    • -1

Pro tip - don’t use chrome

  • +1

Will this deal actually be $799.20? It is showing for me as listed at $999 before the 20% discount for tomorrow.

I'm looking at a laptop and really would prefer 8GB ram also, but for this price it's really tempting.

  • +2

surface laptop 4GB is now listed for $999 and hopefully $799.2 tomorrow with the 20% off.
Feel bad for the person who just bought one for $999

  • +6

I'm using one of these laptops right now and can honestly say it is the best laptop I have owned. I've had it for a few months now and am thoroughly satisfied. I previously have always purchased Dell laptops around the $1,000 mark with higher specs following recommendations from Ozbargainers. I was not expecting much when I bought this one but found the build quality really good. Performance has not been an issue either having used it daily for work (remote desktop mostly). If people have general usage requirements, I wouldn't get put off by people commenting about the 4GB RAM.

    • +1

I recogn this is better than my 2015 XPS13, this is good pricing

    • +1

Totally agree with this. I use it everyday and now use it more than my MacBook pro.

I have been pretty careful with it though and refuse to install anything on it to keep it running smooth. (Luckily 100% of my work is on chrome)

  • Win10 and office365/2016 together require 3 GB RAM as minimum system requirement. Chrome as we know hoards memory unless you cleanup your tabs. Forget about other apps.

So unless you are like my next-door-neighbour who meticulously clicks close button before switching from browsing to word processing to spreadsheets to solitaire, you may experi nice frequent hiccups.

4GB is definitely not future-proof for another couple of years, and you’d invest in a laptop to last for at least that long?

    • +1

If you want a future proof laptop you pay $3k not $800

      • Ignorance is bliss.

      • In 2013 I paid $1200 for a Lenovo Thinkpad T series ultrabook with 8GB of RAM. It is still going strong and I expect at least another 2-3 years out of it.

    • +2

Or you can not use Chrome? Edge is surprisingly good sometimes.

      • Scrolling with the touchpad or touchscreen is much, much smoother on Edge than Chrome. Hopefully Google doe something about that soon.

  • +1

    4gb is perfect for sure

If you're planning to run maximum of 20 rows in a Excel spreadsheet and have a maximum of one tab open at a time in Chrome

  • Deal highlighted for an 30-40 min or so since there has been a price drop for the Surface.

  • Buy now or wait?

    • I'm on the fence, but figure they are clearing them out for the new models, so I'd say wait.

      • Apparently there's an event in October. But this is a great price

        • +1

It's hard to see how they could get it any lower than this.

        • @josho9: But this is their cheapest model, so we may see the others getting cleared out.

    • Paid $879.20 four weeks ago for the same laptop from the same Microsoft eBay store.

It seems Citibank Guaranteed Pricing doesn't cover eBay sales :(

      • What the point of price guarantee?

  • +1

Thanks chibot, I saw it in my list of spam. and manage to order 2 for my kids. It is for School and 4 gb is plenty. but I agree, pricing based of RAM is crazy. Just like when Apple started it with ipod eons ago. now every manufacturers are doing it… :(

  • I was wondering if this would come with the bill, so I could claim the GST?

    • +1

Will come with a tax invoice.

    • +1

Comes with a tax invoice at the original $999 price.

    • Thanks guys

  • +1

Thanks OP, this is perfect for my parents.

  • +1

Thanks, I have purchased this laptop.

  • Would you get this or the new Surface Go for a similar price?

    • +1

Depends of you want a tablet or a laptop. This is a much better deal than the Go imo.

    • It depends on what you want to do on it and how you intend to use it.

I would personally get this over the Go as it is cheaper (after adding the Go keyboard) and has a faster processor. It can also balance on my lap and on uneven surfaces more easily than a tablet.

But if you find the tablet functionality useful, then the Go is worth looking at. Or maybe even a used Surface Pro 4.

    • It is for my mum who has a cheap 5-6 year old Toshiba that she paid about $500 for. It is laggy as hell now and it is a brick! She just needs it for all the Office applications, browsing, spider solitaire and looking at photos. She doesn't like buying new computers often so do you think this will still handle all those tasks reasonable well in another 5 years?

      • Sounds like my mum haha. I bought her one earlier this year (exact same spec) and she loves it. She uses Excel, browsing a few websites, and that's about it. Perfect.

I bought her a Chromebook before but she didn't really like it (can't run full MS Office, had to jump through a few hoops to print to the home wifi printer, a few other things) so I decided to just get her a Windows machine that's more capable.

        • Reckon it’s worth paying an extra $300 for the 8gb version for sale at Harvey at the moment?

        • @mitch21: For my mum, no. For yours, it depends on what you think she'll be doing in 3-4 years time. :)

It’s windows S , so you can only install apps from microsoft store , it’s kind of limiting . So , no thanks .

    • Free to upgrade?

    • +2

You may switch to Windows 10 Pro at no cost.
You can't revert to S once you switch to Pro

  • Purchased for $720 using the code + eBay giftcards offer (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/404441)!

  • Received it today, there are some minor scratch marks at the bottom of the laptop, do anyone have the same issue?

  • Bought one yesterday. Thanks!

  • Bought one too, It is light and beautiful. Upgraded to Windows Pro for free. Installed recommended apps and created a restore endpoint. Around 50GB out of 117GB space left.
