This is a great receiver, I got one a little while back from Videopro for $585. When updated to current software it has Google Chromecast built in which is a great feature if you like online streaming etc. It sounds much better than my previous Yamaha htr-3066 receiver which came as a pleasant surprise.

    • And to add I have an older expensive Magnat speaker setup that suddenly sounds much better than my few years younger Yamaha with this. Maybe the speaker setup for MCACC is better than the older YPOA now,I don't know. Great value for the bucks is all I would say.

  • I've got an old cheap yamaha receiver i've been using for years now. I have no idea about these things and i'm wondering if buying one of these will make my speakers sound better. I'm running a set of Jamo 606 5.1 speakers and they sound fine with my amp at the moment. I'm wondering if it's worth upgrading to this receiver. Anyone have any thoughts?

It will be worth buying if:

      • You have the latest 4K TV with HDR & Dolby Vision pass-through HDMI.
      • Like to use an app on the phone to control the receiver.
      • Like internet radio.

It sounds good for what it is however it is an entry level 7.2 channel receiver. Don't get fooled by the wattage ratings on it.
      I reckon it will push 70 - 80W RMS per channel @ 8 Ohm, 2 channel driven… and that's being generous .. I reckon even less.
Don't think that this will blow you away with loudness and clarity as it is OK for the price.

If you are after a significant difference, you have to spend on an LX series.

Not sure what Yammy receiver you have but if the main reason is for sound, then stick to your Yammy.

But for this discounted price, you can't go wrong. Not worth $1K+ RRP

Btw: The replacement VSX-933 is now available hence the discount IMO.

      Cheers

      • Thanks for the super detailed reply mate. I'm not home at the moment so can't find out the actual model of my receiver. I don't have a 4k TV and don't want internet radio so i think i'll pass on it seeing it won't be much of an upgrade from what i have already. Really appreciate the info!

      • Apart from all the bells and whistles, you can simply plug a USB stick with FLAC files into the front and just play music :) Two different zones even.

70 watts, keeping a little bit of headroom up your sleeve, with efficient speakers of say 93 dB and you are laughing at the price.

        Also excellent for BluRay movies.

        Good buy.

      • Hey Vinni,

        Great info there!

I was just seeing what you would recommend for me? My 4K tv only has one HDMI port that displays in 4K (HDMI3), but I have two things that I want to display in 4K (Xbox and Foxtel). Would something like this be good for me or what else is there to consider? I currently have the HTZ818BD Blu-ray HOME THEATRE SYSTEM which is 5 years old so I am ready for an upgrade!

        • This receiver would be ideal.

          • 1 x HDMI input on the Pioneer for the Xbox
          • 1 x HDMI input on the Pioneer for Foxtel.
          • 1 x HDMI input from your existing Bluray player (HDMI out bluray to HDMI in to Pioneer)

          • 1 x HDMI out from Pioneer to HDMI3 in to TV

Switch on the receiver which HDMI input you want to display.

Your existing speakers can connect to speaker out from the Pioneer receiver

          Cheers

      • Thanks for that. I'm actually considering this because I currently have an old VSX-524 which is great as a basic ARC receiver and AV switch, but with my new Samsung 75 4K HDR TV (which replaced my old Sharp 60 FHD), I don't have enough HDMI inputs and the VSX-524 doesn't allow 4K HDR passthrough (with HDCP 2.2).

I ended up buying a cheap sub $50 HDMI switch off eBay which worked reasonably well (in terms of supporting HDR, 4K, and the video and audio going through the TV's 3 HDMI inputs - one of which is the ARC) however occasionally I get flicker/flashes where the video cuts out for a split second (ie goes black) and it disrupts the movie watching experience. I found that when plugged directly into the TV such as my Apple TV 4K, it works perfectly. But my Xbox One X and PS4 Pro both have the flicker every now and then and I suspect I'm not getting the optimal quality.

So the question is whether this receiver might be the one to replace my VSX-524 and allow me to get the switching capability. I'd like to get some kind of feature improvement (Airplay?) just to help justify spending the coin on something which presumably won't actually improve sound quality out of my Pioneer S-11/S-51 speakers… but it's not like it would get worse right? (or have I just assumed 9>5?)

        • Cheap external HDMI switches and the like are glitchy.

I wouldn't waste my money on them IMO.

This unit is ideal as it is HDCP 2.2 compliant on all HDMI inputs/output.

It also has Apple Airplay Certification.

IMO, this unit may improve the sound quality however it has internet connectivity and features that are ideal.

I mean $535.20 is really not much to spend considering that you will keep this for another 5 years

EDIT: If have intentions of purchasing this receiver only for improvement of sound quality, then you may be disappointed. This receiver is good for connectivity, updated HDMI/HDCP 2.2 switching and some cool features.

For example, if you the latest TV with HDCP 2.2 and have an older receiver, it will not output video due to copyright protection.

For improvement of sound quality, you have to look at the sound quality/format input and also the combination of the system you have … e.g. Speakers, receiver, DAC, connectivity … etc.

          Cheers

        • @vinni9284: Are there any other similarly priced receivers which might be slightly more expensive but actually offer me better sound quality than my existing VSX-524 and offer the same switching features (HDCP 2.2, etc).

        • +1

          @jace88:

That's really hard to say tbh as not many 7.2 Channel receivers sell for around this price. A few months ago, HN sold a Denon X2300 for around the same price but I think you can't find them atm.

The reason why I recommended this unit for you is that the Pioneer S-11/S-51, are entry level speakers; usually they are not sold separate and are part of the "HTP" Home Theater Pack. The HTP usually comprises of the entry level VSX-3XX receiver, with very limited connectivity and spring clips for speaker connection.

The combination of speakers and AV receiver should synchronize. That is, you want a higher end AV receiver, then you need the next level(s) of HT speakers.

This unit will be more than enough to drive your system effortlessly.

          Cheers

        • @vinni9284: So if I go with the 932, will it also set me up for the future should I want to upgrade to better/larger/newer speakers? Or am I bottlenecking myself?

        • @jace88:

The 932 is an overkill for your current setup however, yes it will be future proof for a while.
You can still purchase the 932 and keep your speakers and when you are ready, upgrade the speakers to match the receiver.
You don't have to spend mega $$ for speakers as the 932 is an entry level 7.2 channel receiver.
Possibly, an entry level Klipsch, Krix or Polks .. You can go to HN, or even an AV/Stereo outlet.

However … sometimes, retail outlets have a 7.2 AV receiver & speaker bundle deal so you can save when you buy complete. For example, boxing day & EOFY sales.

Many here say Klipsch speakers have a higher efficiency/dB rating however, and I know this as I have several … it does make a difference a little .. but they still need heaps of power for them to "sing" properly.

          Cheers

  • Mine arrived last week.

    replaced my RX V379 Yamaha.

i dont like the slight hum noise the Pioneer VSX-932 has . The yamaha didn't have that.

I also had issues with upgrading the firmware with Wifi. The first update works, then said there was a second update. It kept failing and had the message constantly on my unit to update and came with an ERROR 0-05! on the HUD.

I had to download to USB and use a USA firmware update to resolve the issue as the AU website didn't have any. So now my unit is USA.
The remote app doesn't work and cannot detect the unit.

    6.8/10 rated unit.

My The cheaper $599 RRP Yamaha V379 was 10/10.

    • I don’t have a hum, but I’ve noticed when switching sources you need to press the volume button to get the volume to “turn on”.

I’m on wired and had no problem updating firmware. Can you move the unit close to your router and hardwire to fix firmware?

    • Absolutely no hum on mine and no problem switching sources, volume works ok each time. The only small issue I had is I thought the MCACC Auto microphone setup had set the sub woofer volume a bit high but that was easily fixed via the App.

The remote app running on my Nokia 7 Plus Android phone works just fine.

I have had no problems updating over wired network. If you have problems updating via wireless do a USB update instead if no wired connection is available. I never trust wireless updates on gadgets if I can avoid it.

I have not tried yet but it should have Amazon Alexa integration by now. Google Chromecast was activated about two updates back.

      • So when you turn the unit on, you cant hear the slightest hum from a meter away?

        • Hi jt0505t, absolutely no hum or noise at all from the unit turned on with my ear a few cm from it. Maybe you got a dud?

        • @Palamedes:

          Hey thanks for your reply.

          I've uploaded the noise here

          https://youtu.be/Dx2AlTaj3O0

Turn up the volume and you make need to repeat it 2-3 times. I'm using an iphone so its not the best sound recorder. But it shows what i here…. So you dont here that noise?
          cheers

        • @jt0505t: Still cannot hear it on your video even with volume cranked up. I have tinnitus so if it's a high pitched hum at the same frequency as my tinnitus tone maybe I wouldn't hear it.

        • @Palamedes:

Oh ok, no problems. Thanks for your input about your unit. Gives me some confidence to enquire to Pioneer/Supply.
          Cheers

Seeing this post on the receiver, it just occurred to me there will be no more cheap Denon deals from Amazon Germany/UK anymore available to Australia :(

    • yup, i thought the same.. I was hoping to get one of the new Denon with the Alexa integration.. but it seems that I am a few years away from getting it at a decent price locally.

      • and now looking into receiver, it seems like hdmi 2.1 with eARC is only just making it into high end receivers …. so maybe good idea to wait. Denon x3500h has just come out and looks pretty impressive…but the price

      • But the bullet and got the new Yamaha 685. Kg out of stock on eBay with the 20% coupon so got from elite on ebay and used the eBay plus 15% coupon. About $20 more than kg. Getting a new tv this week so couldn't wait for the next time kg get stock in. 685 will supposedly support earc with firmware update. Let's see how Yamaha deliver on this as Sony has failed me in the past with promised updates on their 2000es receiver. Only the Denon 3500h will be getting earc, not the 2500h. So that's put Denon out of my price range anyway.

  • I’m planning to have a receiver with a set of tower speakers for my living room..
Any recommnedation to pair with these pioneer receiver?

I wanted To stick with a budget of 1-1.2k for the speakers..
Was originally planning to have just spend 1.5k for a recever plus speaker set..

Any advice would be appreciated guys.

    • Something with high sensitivity and high ohmage. Klipsch fit this bill. Try for 8ohms and around 95db sensitivity’

      • Saw a review of klipsch yesterday. Nice looking cones… and good reviews as well. A bit pricey thou.. will check a few. Thanks

    • Loads of nice options open if if willing to buy speakers 2nd hand

      • Is it worth it? not sure if there are any risk on buying a second hand speakers?

        • For me I have no issues with 2nd hand speakers, they often last many years, don't get outdated (like AVRs) and you can likely be given a listen by the seller

  • For what it's worth, I found this summary of VSX-933 (the newer model) vs VSX-932 (this one that's on sale):

2018 Pioneer VSX-933 7.2ch new generation AV Receiver
    Pioneer VSX-933 replaces the 2017 model VSX-932.

VSX-933 has resolved the 2 major letdowns of the VSX-932 2017 model:
    - low count of HDMI inputs (4)
    - no Zone 2

    Differences from VSX-932:

    • a little more power +5W (130 W/ch (6 ohms, 1 kHz, THD 1.0 %, 1ch Driven vs 135 W/ch (6 ohms, 1 kHz, THD 1.0 %, 1ch Driven;

    • 2 extra HDMI Inputs (HDMI 4 In (4 Assignable) vs (HDMI 6 In (4 Assignable))

    • 1 extra AV (Composite) 2 In (Assignable)

    • ZONE 2 Pre/Line Out

    • Speaker 9 ch Out (FRONT, CENTER, SURROUND, SURROUND BACK/HEIGHT/Bi-AMP, ZONE 2) but there are still only 7 amps - AVR switches between SURROUND BACK/HEIGHT/Bi-AMP and ZONE 2 posts;

    • 30Watt less power consumption (Power Consumption/Standby: 480 W/0.15 W vs Power Consumption/Standby: 450 W/0.15 W)

    • larger chassis (Dimensions (W x H x D): 435 x 173 x 320.5 mm vs Dimensions (W x H x D): 435 x 173 x 370.5 mm)

    Notes:
    - no eARC or other HDMI 2.1 features implemented or anounced!!!

  • Chepest way to get into Atmos…there is a really good review on StereoNET.net.au that prompted me to buy this

  • Is this actually a good price?
Weren't these priced at $384 a month ago?

    EDIT: Yes it was
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/397152

    • if you could find one

    • That was JB Hifi clearing out display models. For those who could find them a lot didn't come with remotes/manuals.
