Hey everyone. I've been looking at Felco 7 secateurs for a few weeks & the average price is around $120 inc delivery. I found this for $99 including delivery.

It seems like a lot of money for a device like this but if you are a gardener you would understand the quality of this product compared to a $10 item.

  • Excuse my ignorance, but how are the felco compares with the $6 Bacho? (Note: The $6 Bacho promotion has been expired of course, current price is $22)

I wouldn't even compare it with that model, The site does even give proper specs. A higher model in a Bacho may be compared but I have never used Bacho.

Alos have a look at the Bahco PXR M2 Slightly cheaper great quality and the Spring in the Bahco tends not to fall out, and use your 5% code for ebay…

    7 Pruning Shears $99

So about $14 each… That's not too bad.

You can often find some at Bunnings for < $10 though.

  • Have you ever had one? If so how was the spring coil, for this price I expect the coil doesn't fly off if you accidentally let the handle loose

I expect the coil doesn't fly off if you accidentally let the handle loose

Don't worry if it does, you can pick up new springs for around $20

    • Spring coil holds well and they cost between $2.50 & $8.25 for two at Bunnings if needed. This type of spring is better than a coil as twigs don't get caught in it.

If considering have a look at the other models listed as you may not like the revolving handle.

      • For that price I expect it won't even fall out and no need for spare coil

        • Nah they don't tend to. Can be lost if you throw em around.

  • Insert Poll Question:

$99 pruning shears -Or- hire a gardener from air tasker for $90 & spend $9 down the pub?

    • Most perennial plants & fruit trees require yearly pruning. $9 won't be enough at the pub haha.

  • Pity they don't have Felco 10 Left Hand.
    Great secateurs.

For those asking about the value of felco secateurs:

They are a very different beast to others in a lower price rang- other than lasting for longer, having swappable blades and responding well to whetstones:

A set of felcos will cut through a branch of about an inch diameter like a chefs knife through a block of cheddar. A set of lesser secateurs, however, would typically have you reaching for a set of garden loppers or a saw. The cut will also be clean- with no splitting or tearing.

    There are 2 benefits here:
    1. You can cut thicker branches (obviously)
    2. The lesser force required to do any form of pruning is much less tiring if you do a lot of pruning.

The 7s are good for long hours of one handed pruning of smaller branches (like cane pruning on a vineyard). For more occasional gardeners I'd recommend felco 13s- these will accommodate 2 hands and can basically replace both standard secateurs and a set of loppers- replacing two low quality tools with 1 professional quality tool is also pretty good value.

I used to cane-prune grape vines with felco 7s, thin branches, 8-9hrs a day during pruning season. For home gardening, however, I just have one pair of felco 13s and would recommend those instead.

I've had my Felco 9s for 28 years now, and they are still as awesome as when I bought them! I used to work as a gardener, and still use them a few times a week. Only ever replaced the blade about 10 years ago. Don't buy landfill people. Buy something of good quality, once.

    • So they have a 10 year life before you have to pay more on it
