Seagate 2TB ext HDD (ST320005EXM101) w/ McAfee Total Protection 2011 for 3pcs - $98.00 (HN)

1061

I went to Harvey Norman (Sydney CBD) this morning to grab one of the $99 2TB HDD being pumped on the radio at the moment (as mentioned here http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/40084). They had a number of the 2TB Samsung G3 Station HX-DU020EC for $99.00ea

But, just 5m away from them was this offer:

2TB Seagate External (ST320005EXM101) with a 3-licence retail copy of McAfee Total Protection 2011 for $98.00 - it was previously a shrinkwapped bonus deal for $175.00.

18 units in stock at 9.55am.

At least read the description before you comment! Where do you see the dupe?

  • +2

    I Don't think it is a dup Spida….

  • is this the one Ashlea just got pilloried for?

    • No, it's a different product, and the OP doesn't insult :)

      • +1

OP was given no reason to :) and most of what I said was far, far more polite than 75% of this community is on a daily basis.

    • Move on please….

          Lol I read that as

Jedi business, go back to your balls

  • i'll give a wow and a 1+ for this deal

    well done

  • +1

    Good work with the pictures!

  • +1

Ok 1 for techies - in case I do a HN visit and my local has the same.

Which would be more reliable - the seagate or the samsung

    • I'm pretty sure Seagate is renown for their hard drives :)

      • +3

Also famous for some click of death issues on them too! :p

It would be wise to do some research on this model drive to see if it's affected; or if there's a firmware patch necessary! ;)

    • I'd choose a Seagate any day. I have found them to be the most reliable. Avoid WD!

      • +2

I have found WD to be the most reliable and Seagate the worse.

        • +1

Based on the reviews you hear, I'm fairly confident to say they're around equal, and which one people like or dislike depends on chance alone.

      • I have found the contrary

    • I suffered from the Seagate click of death issue after 1 month :(

      Avoid Seagate at all costs!!!!!!

I own Samsung and Western Digitals and haven't had problems with them…

    • Go Seagate. The Samsung G3 station has many reported problems including slow transfer speed and reliability.

      http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=1489670&#

      • whirlpool are always full of whiners, the hdd from the G3 station does 110MB/s average on eSATA.

whoever thought that 1tb with USB 2.0 is the perfect match should be shot

        • Exactly. But all these $99 drives are just the older USB 2.0 only models. If they they were tthe newer models with eSATA then they would be more popular, but the eSATA models like thge Samsung Story Station 3.0 sell for more.

    • Not sure about the reliability of these particular drives. However, according to the link below, Samsung is on average more reliable than Seagate, apparently because Seagate had some issues with firmware on 7200.11. The other drives may have similar reliability to Samsung.

  • wow, very very good.

    bonus with the McAfee

on a side note - Is the HDD removable from the caddy?

    • +5

as in, is the fat kid removable from the cake?
or is John Elliot removable from the cigarette?
or is State Goverenment removable from speed camera revenue?

Feel free to add. I'm just trying to distract the shitestorm from Ashlea !!

      • :P

  • i wish there was a HN near work :(

  • Does this one have an AC adaptor? Sorry I can't tell whether it would or wouldn't…

    • +1

Yes. All 3.5" hard drives require a AC adaptor.

    • it does.

    • Thanks :)

  • +1

    Thats a great price.
    Same price as an internal.

  • would any HN price match it in Sydney?

  • What is the address?

  • will buy 1 tomorrow on impulse
    thanks ozbargain

    • +6

can you buy something at a later date on impulse? I'm not so sure…

      • Maybe the impulse just wasnt there today…
but they're definately expecting it to be there and uncontrollable tomorrow!

    • +2

actually - if you are a true ozbargainer, you'd realise there is no other choice BUT to buy on impulse. I think we have an imposter here, guys. Now let's rip this rubber mask off you and see who you really are…..

      • +1

Agreed, I buy so many things on impluse thanks to Ozbargain and half of the things I don't really need. They are collecting dust, I'm sure
most of you do the same.

      • +11

Fred: Now let’s rip this rubber mask off you and see who you really are…..

        Gang: Old man Gerry Harvey!!!
Harvey: I'd have gotten away with it too, if it wasn't for you pesky kids & that darn dog!
        Scooby: Rooby-dooby-doo!

  • Just picked up 2 for myself. Thanks OzDJ_

    • Is the McAfee cd sealed?

      • Yes. Shring-wrapped.

  • +1 for the "This product must be sold with a new PC or notebook" photo.

  • Officework Pricematch? interstate?

  • hmm 98 dollars for McAfee +hdd, hdd must be worth atleast 150 as you'd have to pay me more than 50 bux to take Mcafee!

actually mcafee isnt too bad ;)

  • Is it in any other states? Anyone please confirm?

  • I just rang HN CBD and they have sold out of this.

  • +1

    Thank you for posting OZDJ.

  • great deal! thumbs up for this one!

anyone know if this deal apply for victoria as well?

  • +1

Nerts, I left for lunch early to try and grab this deal but was ozbargained to it. :(

  • None in Gold Coast store… also none of the other 2TB drive offer either. Only 1.5TB drive for $107 (no deal)

  • None at the Fortitude Valley store either. :(

  • None at HN Aspley

  • None at HN Nunawading or Knox (for Vic peeps)

  • so if i get the anti-virus, then how much does it cost to renew it every year?

  • +2

Just went to the Sydney CBD store - all sold out :(

  • +1

Save me 10 minutes walk & disappointment :))

  • +1

None at Auburn Harvey Norman (NSW). Officeworks Auburn) had the same external drive but no anti-virus software. The manager said she could beat the price by 5% but it is the external drive only, no anti-virus software is included. Officeworks full price for the external drive is $117. So, looks like officeworks will do the 2tb external drive only for $93.10. This is for the seagate one, not samsung story.

  • none at HN Indooroopilly

  • -2
  • HN Cannington store (WA) don't have this at all. Only have samsung $2TB for $99. More than 20 on the floor this morning. Not sure bout now

  • Brisbane city store only had the Samsung. There were quite a few left when I went at 12 noon.

    • I was there at 12:30.

  • Must have just missed you :)

  • Could not see any of these at HN Preston, Vic. Just bought the Samsung Story 2TB instead.

    • Bell St? My neighbour picked one up there earlier today, must have been a tad too late!

  • +1

I don't have any personal experience with the Seagate Expansion 2TB. However if the following thread is anything to go by people might be wary about buying it.

    http://forums.seagate.com/t5/Other-External-products/Seagate…

Basically if your computer goes to sleep, the hard drive doesn't work after waking up (unless you pull it out and put it back in). People are speculating it is a firmware bug.

There is another thread about problems with the hard drive and once again it seems to be about bugs with the power management.

    http://forums.seagate.com/t5/Other-External-products/Problem…

  • none in broadway, except the 2TB Samsung

  • Plenty in Gepps Cross Harvey Norman SA.
    Got one….

  • Thanks, great price, and good-quality photos.

  • None at HN Highpoint.

  • +1

trying to clear all the USB 2.0 drives to make way for USB 3.0. Shame I don't have USB 3.0 ports yet but I do have eSATA and am impressed with the speed gains over USB2.0. Intel just released their Thunderbolt technology which provides 10Gbps transfer speed. Twice as fast as USB 3.0. We need these major speed gains because the hard drive capacities are huge.

  • no 2tb drives of any brand on dicsount at HN QV when I was there on saturday (26th Feb)

    • thats odd as they even had a TV ad about it…

  • -2

im pretty sure this is a green drive which is quite slow so ok for storing data but not suitable for streaming movies from still 98 is a great price

also avoid mcafee like the plague go with microsoft security essentials its lite does a great job and is free

    • hmmm, if you can't stream movies from (pretty much) >any< HDD your doing SOMETHING SERIOUSLY wrong.

USB 1 might not be able to:
(USB version 1.1 supported two speeds, a full speed mode of 12Mbits/s and a low speed mode of 1.5Mbits/s)
but 480Mbps from USB2 should be more than ample.
even most new slow drives read at about 80MBs (~800Mbps)

so even a hdd like this would be able to easily stream full hd content.
      http://www.blu-ray.com/faq/

According to the Blu-ray Disc specification, 1x speed is defined as 36Mbps. However, as BD-ROM movies will require a 54Mbps data transfer rate the minimum speed we're expecting to see is 2x (72Mbps).

so USB2 bandwith being the bottleneck of the hardware 480 Mbps (drive can easily flood usb2) vs 54Mbps required for full HD….. yeah not a problem even taking overhead into account.

  • i would rather pay 20 more bucks for usb 3 samsung story 2tb.

  • -2

It'd be a great deal, if it was a reputable brand.

Seagate have a horrible reputation, for good reason. Everyone needs to keep voting with their wallet, and avoid Seagate products.
