890 rating.
Price drop due to the i7 9th gen coming out soon.
https://www.theverge.com/2018/8/12/17680384/intels-9th-gener…Expect more expensive Z390 chipset boards, knowing Intel.
That too - however the 9th gen has been confirmed that it will work in the last generation Z370 boards too.
Looking at the cpu score of my current vs new CPUs, https://www.cpubenchmark.net/mid_range_cpus.html
is there anything other than the speed increase that I can expect?
Eg I have i5 3gen, if I go i5 8gen I get a bit over 50% boost. Which is nice but it took 5gen to get there. My 2nd Gen is still faring well too, especially with the overclock of the K series narrowing that percentage margin.
same, and if I want to upgrade, i'll have to replace mobo + ram as well
If you ran CPU/thread intensive apps you'd benefit from the L3 cache increase (6MB to 9MB in 8600k) and cores from 4 to 6 plus slight overall clock speed increase and turbo. If you're just an average user of office apps/browsing, not heavy gaming or compiling etc. it probably wouldn't be worth the upgrade considering you'd need at least a motherboard upgrade also. RAM is way overpriced at the moment too.
Fair to say most people looking to buy something are waiting to see what happens with 9th gen Intel, new nVidia cards and how they stack up against AMD.
I do some photo editing, that's the most intensive thing I do. Not sure if it is considered CPU/thread intensive in the scheme of things, I'm sure it's less than gaming.
And yeah I'd need to go >16gb ram too.Your 4 core i5 is probably fine for what you do TBH, you'd get more benefit from a fast SSD/m2 drive (for OS and apps) and a healthy amount of RAM - if you don't have those already. It's always nice to look at a quality monitor as well.
I think you'd find 16GB of RAM plenty lol, when you start looking at 32GB (2x16 modules) it's up near $500 just for RAM, and then you say - well I might as well get that new i7/i9 processor and RTX graphics card and all of a sudden it's a monster, there's nothing left in your wallet and all you want to do is edit some photos!
Lol at the coupon code used to buy an Intel chip…
Hahaha.
Am I missing something? this has been $420 AUD delivered in the past.. how is this a deal or are prices really that bad right now or was really good a few months ago?
It's that bad. It's a terrible, terrible time to build a pc.
This isn't news worthy. Too minor a discount. And unless ur chasing the maximum frames per second, amd makes more sense as a general computer.
how does this compare to i7 4970?
http://cpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Intel-Core-i7-8700K-vs-…
Roughly 44% increase in performance for the 8700K over the 4790
26% over the 4790K variant
oh wow, I was expecting not much increase with day to day programs and games
8700K is a beast even over previous gen hardware it holds its own.
Combine with ‘phenom’ ebay code for extra 10% off
