Help Regarding Return of Memory Module Bought from MSY

Hi

I would like to ask if it is possible to return the memory module that I recently bought from MSY.

I asked the MSY guy to give me a RAM that will be compatible to Dell Precision 5520 Workstation. He gave me a Kingston 16gb 2400mhz (KVR24S17D8/16) but the recommended one is (KCP424SD8/16) which they don't have in their store.

Is it still possible to return this product in exchange to Crucial which is more compatible to the Precision laptop? The other thing is I opened the packaging already.

Thanks.

    • While this is true, OP started with single-channel, so should never see reduced performance regardless of which combination of RAM module(s) they install. (Up until they use all the available RAM, of course).

The speed boost from more RAM is probably much better than the small hit from single vs dual channel (as always, it depends on the workload), so I would keep 16+8.

Good point about ESD, you should only hold the absolute edges (i.e. the white-ish cut fibreglass, not the green bits! I've seen people say "I was holding the edge" when they're holding it 'near' the edge… ), and not the edge with the gold fingers…

    • During the 486 days I remember pressing hard on the chip to install the CPU on the friction fit sockets, same as the memory chips on the S3 savage PCI video card. There nothing wrong touching the grey/black memory chips, they are epoxy. Touch all you like!

Just don't touch the gold contacts and wear ESD protection.

I bought a motherboard from MSY about 5 years ago and when I opened it up and tried to install, it I noticed it was incompatible as the plugs were wrong for the other hardware I bought. Just a few letters different on the product code and it was completely my fault. The guy at the shop was nice and swapped me for the correct one. He simply swapped the identical metal brackets or whatever they were to ensure everything was still fine.

    Good luck.

    • Thanks I'll try if I could do it. Let you know about it

  • You will not notice a difference between the 2 types. And I severely doubt it is less "snappier"than before.

  • Have you updated your system BIOS? Suggest doing so to ensure you benefit from the incremental changes (Check 'Other versions'notes for older changes).

    https://www.dell.com/support/home/au/en/aubsd1/drivers/driveā€¦

Rams sticks will sync speed to the lowest common denominator so should work fine together.

    • Bios updated already

  • Pretty sure the recommended one is the old (outdated) version of the one sold to you.

  • Managed to used the CPU-Z in both 8gb and 16gb but don't know how to post screenshots here.

    P.s. - sorry newbie here

If it boots and runs without blue-screening the ram is compatible.

If you only had 1 stick 8GB previously, then plugging in a 16GB module even with mismatched size (not speed) ram, you are still running at the same single channel speed as you were originally

ie you have the same memory bandwidth but 24GB rather than 8GB of ram

      Relax and enjoy it

Single Channel vs. Dual Channel hardly make difference nowadays anyway, it mostly affect the performance of the integrated graphics, and if you are using integrated graphics then you are probably not gaming anyway. I don't even bother with Dual Channel builds anymore, I'd rather Single Channel so that I have more slots free to buy more RAM in the future.

This falls firmly within "Change of Mind" because you misdiagnosed your PC's slowness as being an issue with the RAM amount or speed, but when you were giving RAM which is up to spec the slowness continues because it wasn't a RAM issue in the first place.

The memory supplies is completely up to spec according to the specifications provided.

Memory manufacturers are constantly making new revisions to RAM modules and new model numbers go with that every time. It would be very difficult to find the exact model number in stock anywhere once it's out of date, and nor should you because any memory module to the same specification is perfectly fine.

If MSY had had a look at your PC and determined that you need to buy X RAM to speed it up but it didn't help then you'd have a case, but it's not their fault if they didn't diagnose it.

    • But, package is open, hence he should just be really nice when he asks to return.

He can ask, they might even accept with a restocking fee, but MSY are not under any obligation to. It would be nice customer service.

Don't get me wrong I don't like MSY very much, they have been quite difficult at times even with 100% legitimate returns, but in fairness they didn't do anything wrong in OP's case so it would be wrong to let some people get the wrong impression about them based on this particular story where they didn't do anything wrong this time.

It would be nice customer service.

I honestly rather they didn't. Good customer service isn't free. If you wanted good customer service, feel free to go to the dozens of other computer stores that exist - I'll keep going to MSY and pay less because I know what I'm doing and don't need the customer service.

Everytime I go there they do not advise of what to buy, for what machine etc purely for this reason. There is nothing wrong with the ram, you were just a little lazy and didn't research yourself. Your faulty, not MSY's.

    Noobs shouldn't shop at MSY.

      sorry, out of stock! NEXT!

So you asked the store guy to suggest something and then paid for it. You opened the item after it arrived and then realised you wanted something else? Why didn't you do your research on what it is that you wanted?

Unless they do a change of mind refund (which is highly unlikely now that you've opened the retail packaging), tough luck.

  • If the system had 8gb adding more memory wIll not make it snappier, unless the device is paging to disk.
Best value upgrade for most users is to get a good ssd or flash drive.

If you use memory intensive programs like photoshop and some games then extra memory may help

If you only had 2gb then different storey

      Or 200 open chrome tabs.

What does "more compatible" mean? Surely either it is or it isn't
