  • You mean $135 in title, not $139.

Just be wary of "life time maps" marketing spiel.

TomTom's life time maps = when they choose to stop supporting the device with updates or accessories. If that's 12 months or 3 years from now because of a new product lineup, then that's "life time" to them…. not you.

    • They’re hackable though and even old hardware can be updated.

If they’d just make these reasonably waterproof I reckon they’d sell a ton more than they do. Phone screen’s are almost unreadable in sunlight on a bike, even at brightest settings.

      • +2

That's a good point… using them on bikes is something I didn't consider!

Still… would be nice if their lifespan was longer than 'whenever they choose to bin it".

Lifetime is not an accurate description imo.

        • Yeah I agree, no question. It's a deceptive marketing tactic and in my view unethical but the fact that new maps etc can be added by the user in spite of the official use-by takes the sting out of it.

      • Older models that use TomTom Home and show up on PC can be hacked. So even if they discontinue the map updates you can still manually update. Newer models that use TomTom MyDrive Connect can not be hacked since they don't show up on PC. Only accessible with TomTom MyDrive Connect. TomTom Android is easily hackable as well.

I prefer a mount for my phone and using free google maps..

No idea how tomtom etc are still in business.

    • If you go to some places without mobile signal then your phone GPS cannot work.

      • You can still use offline maps that don’t rely on mobile signal.

        • Correct, but once you're off track you'll need signal to re-route otherwise its game over until you manage to get back on the route.

Nevertheless, been using Phone to get to places without any issues.

If you're in places without signal, you going into territory where angels fear to tread.. :)

@TilacVIP: maybe useful for people constantly driving, eg. taxi, Trucker, delivery…

for rest of us, just download Here app, it has whole world map offline. It used to be Nokia's, but sold to big Germany car cos. that's probably the only thing still good from Nokia…

anyway, u can download offline maps for any country. I have downloaded the whole world map for about 30GB on my phone (as lots of small files, duno for sure how big). i've tested it when i traveled to EU, very handy, lots of details, can do offline search, speed warnings, etc. navigation can auto re-route if u take wrong turn, etc.

GPS uses satellites, not phone towers. You don't need a mobile signal at all. I never use the phone tower setup - too intrusive and it costs data. I'm always off line when navigating using gps. If you're talking about the ability to download maps - I do it for whatever country before going there. Or whatever state of Aus I'm in.

        • @alexGoodwin:

Agree. Free Here We Go Maps on Mobile work great on a mobile/tablet. Only downside. No offline favourites/bookmarks. Just recent history. Although there are many people like my parents who still prefer a stand alone GPS.

I'm wondering why would anyone buy this device when ANY Android phone does at least an equal job with Google maps that are 100% up to date all the time.

You can download map updates for offline use and you can certainly but even new Android phones for less than $135. You can also buy fantastic galaxy 5 for not much $$, or any number of Xiaomi and similar phones for very little.

I do have TomTom, even in my car, and I still use my phone most of the time.

  • Not keen on Tom Tom maps, prefer to use my phone or get a Navman
Great price for something you can use a phone for though :)
