Audio Technica AR5BT Wireless over-Ear Headphones $179 @ JB Hi-Fi

130

Free Click & Collect, as usual.

These have previously been down to $209, and regularly retail for $279.

They seem quite well reviewed, notable for excellent battery life, very good sound (especially at this price), comfort, and good build quality.

They have no noise cancelling though, if that's important to you.

There's NFC pairing functionality as well as aptX support.

Overall, good price for some high-quality wireless headphones.

  • no 0.30c no deal.

But no for real, anyone had experience with these?

I had a pair of these until they got pinched/lost. My gripe with them was/is the comfort factor - sore ears after 2-3 hours and needed to often readjust. My ears are long (lobes) but certainly would not classify em as sticky out and the pressure did feel like being against the harder cartilage at top of ear, not lobes.
Plan was to try and source deeper/thicker ear pads but some other bugger got them now and awaiting Sennheiser Momentums as replacement.

Soundwise no issue as in my case have got Viper4Android app on phone so can tweak any cans or in ears to sound as fabulous or crappy as I want according to MY hearing preference.

  • if only these were the QuietPoints at this price…can't go back to headphones with no ANC now that ive gotten used to it on my BB Pro 2, QC35, MDR-1000X and PXC550 (and will shortly buy a pair of zik 3s for good measure)

    • Try the Senny Momentum II's. I find these are brilliant for the price point.

    • How is the sound quality between all of those? Which has the best bass? BB Pro 2/1000X?

      • I can't say for the others, but I do have the WH1000XM2's (newer 1000X's). By default the bass is nothing special. Sony's app allows you to set the EQ and bass-boost if you want. They're nothing like the XB950N1 (probably the best value bassy noise-cancelling headphones there are (if you import them)), but the bass is very well-controlled and quite deep (Diplo's Revolution is a treat, for instance).

sennheisers and sonys are both equal top for sound quality. if anything the sony might be a bit "bassier" but its not how i measure SQ

bose sounds the worst by a country mile, i feel sorry for people who pay $400+ for them.

plantronics SQ somewhere between the sennheiser/sony and bose.

bose ANC is the best, followed by sony, followed by sennheiser, followed by plantronics. ANC between the bose and sony are nearly the same though.

sony's BT pairing is rubbish. only supports connection to one device at once. all the others support simultaneous connections between at least two devices and pairing with up to 5 devices. all of them except the plantronics support NFC pairing though which is very handy.

the sonys are also noticeably heavier than all the others.

so if you are only ever going to use them with one device, the sonys are probably the best bet, otherwise the sennheisers arguably combine the best of all of the features.

EDIT - ive only tried the audio technica quietpoint BT headphones at melbourne airport - ANC was pretty poor and they were very cheap-feeling. would be worth a go for under $200 but certainly not at the price they normally charge. Real shame because audio technica know how to make a decent pair of headphones!

"No highs and no lows, must be a Bose"

Agree with pretty much everything you said, however there's also comfort which is important for many people who use these for hours at a time on planes etc. I've only tried the Bose and Sony personally but I would say Bose are slightly more comfortable.

        • I read that the PXC550 have poor bass?

  • Tempted to get these for work…. No ANC would be ideal so people can still be a pain and interrupt me when needed.

    • +3

There's a lot of misinformation about how ANC works. ANC filters out repetitive waves - like engine noise, AC noise, etc. It doesn't cut out voices, and may actually make them more audible as the other low level noise is filtered out.

    • NC headphones do have the option to act like regular wireless headphones, but if you don't want it then there's no point paying the extra.

    I have these atm.

Pros: bass is not overwhelming. Sound is way more crisp than the Sony1000.
    Small and lightweight.

Cons: no ANC. I feel like this is a pro and con. If you listen to trance and prefer a crisper sound then these are good with no ANC.
Metallic finish. Scratches easily and the feeling of metal touching together is not a great sound or feeling.

If I had an option I would get the Sony's. 7000 or 1000 but would shop for something smaller than these first.

    • Some reviews say these are not comfortable (clamping pressure too high) - what do you think?

  • Delivery so endlessly slow. Order pending for 5 days now…
