Wouldn't it be cheaper buying at DJs with discounted giftcards/cash rewards?

    • indeed - DJ gc are usually 10% off, making this ~ $314

      • +4

Bundle this with the AMEX DJ Offer; ~$287.10

        • +1

How is this possible? If you pay with gift cards purchased at 10% off you can’t pay with your AMEX.

        • Uh.. You can pay with either giftcards or AMEX, but not both…

          SNAP. Beaten by 4 seconds.

        • How?

        • However, Cashrewards (less 10% once rebate comes in) and AMEX (-$30) = 284.10 which is pretty great.

        • @readeral: that’s what I thought too but in checkout, there’s the option to split the payment across gift card + AMEX

  • -2

Pay with afterpay and use cash rewards to get a total of 30% off (20% + 10%)

    • afterpay not available on it.

      • I think you need to check out as a guest for some reason

        Edit: nevermind, it's not working

  • Can I buy giftcards with AMEX offer (-$30) and then use it through Cashrewards (-$35) to get it down to $284.1 ($349 - 10% - $30)?

Apart from price, are these any good? I have a double brick two storey house and always have problem with wifi. I have two routers in the house at the moment and need to switch between the access points manually every time I go upstairs/downstairs.

    • I have two routers in the house at the moment and need to switch between the access points manually every time I go upstairs/downstairs.

What router(s) do you have at the moment? How are they connected to each other?

If you just set your access points to have the same SSID, your devices should roam between them automatically. Roaming is a responsibility of the device (rather than the router).

I feel like mesh technology is still a gimmick … if you switch to google wifi mesh, I'm not sure the hand-off between two access points will be any more slick (given it's a device responsibility). You'll just save on running a cable between the two or three access points.

You might be better off looking at a router with more bands, eg Asus RT-88u. If something like that can cover your whole house, then you don't need to worry about hand off between access points.

      • +1

The routers are from the ISP (NetComm and Technicolor) and I have run a cable downstairs for the second one.
I have setup the same SSIDs but the handover ("roaming") is not as smooth as I expected. Sometimes it doesn't happen because the device (smartphone/laptop) keeps the connection to the weaker one.
        Any recommendations?

        • I have setup the same SSIDs but the handover ("roaming") is not as smooth as I expected

This was my experience with a 2 router set up too. I can't see a mesh system being substantially better at handing off from one access point to another.

          Any recommendations?

Sounds like your existing routers are pretty basic. I switched to an ASUS rt68u … seems to cover the whole house with 1 router. I believe teh rt86u and rt88u have even more bands.

        • @salmon123: thanks

@salmon123: We went from having 3 routers (Netgear) with the same SSID, to having 3 mesh points (Google), and they differ a lot in their behaviour.

With the Netgear routers on the same SSID, it's as you say where it's the device's responsibility to decide which to connect to and when to switch to a diff router on the same SSID. Often devices wouldn't switch to a closer router while walking around the house until they are down to 1 bar or the WiFi first becomes unstable. Some devices tend to switch more aggressively, and some laptops have WiFi settings to adjust the WiFi switch aggressiveness. There's also a momentary disconnect and reconnect when connected to an ip camera and the phone switches routers. WiFi cameras located in the middle of two routers will also always remain connected to the one it initially connected to, regardless of loads on each router.

With the Google mesh, we always have full bars while walking around the house. It seems the mesh network is managing the connections, as the devices now no longer wait for the signal strength to drop to 1 bar first. There's also no obvious momentary disconnect as it switches between mesh points - IP cameras continue to stream without any pause or disconnect and reconnect. WiFi cameras in the middle of two mesh points also dynamically switch mesh points as needed for load balancing, eg when a bunch of us and our devices move from the games room to the living room.

For our place the Google mesh is overall faster and far more reliable than our Netgear routers, even tho the Netgears are rated faster. We're in a congested WiFi area which the Google mesh seems to be handling far better.

Yeah - I've read that mesh wifi systems are better at the hand-off between access points, I'm just reluctant to believe it, given all the other literature saying it's a device responsibility.

What model netgear routers did you have? Is it possible that the mesh system just uses more bands and given better coverage around the house and your devices aren't actually moving between access points that frequently?

  • Thanks OP - I got it with DJ Gift Cards + Gift Card from Points. With 10% CR, great price - couldn't pass it up.

  • This or Ubiquiti ?

    • Ubiquiti. My two cents (worth very little in an anonymous comments section).

      • agree with Kontiki

    • Depends. Having used both, the Google is great for ease of use and also for connections into Ethernet.
I have all 3 of my mesh connected to the house Ethernet and it gives me a full speed connection everywhere.
Being able to set schedules or give my kids time out form the internet with the press of a button, is also handy.

    • Ubiquiti.
Please do not ask silly questions. :)

    • +1

i'm running two of the normal unifi ap not the pro and it already covers a single floor of the whole house. though i will admit, it does take a bit more to set up than google's.

    • If you don't own the house Google wifi is a lot smaller and looks nicer sitting on the desk.

If you own you can mount the ubiquiti to the roof and run POE cables it might be a better option.

I also like the ethernet ports on Google wifi my PC has crappy in built in wifi so ethernet in to Google wifi point works well . Also 2 PC's still connected by gigabit ethernet in study handy for copying steam games etc.

Turns out a single Google wifi router covers my whole house they have surprisingly good coverage. I purchased the 3 pack only ended up using 2 just so I can cover the backyard with full bars .

  • dang, looking for just the one.
    EDIT: https://www.davidjones.com/Product/21395426/Google-WiFi-(1pack)

    $139!! Great deal there.

    Thanks OP

where is this amex $30 offer? I have an amex explorer card can't find any DJ's offer?

I looked at these when I decided to go with a mesh network.

    Two things stood out.
    - It does have a bridge mode, but only if you have one unit - https://support.google.com/wifi/answer/6240987?hl=en-AU. In other words, if you want to run it in bridge mode you'll only be able to use one of the devices, meaning no mesh.
    - It's only a dual band solution. It has 1 x 2.4Ghz band and 1 x 5Ghz band. The more expensive ones (ie Velops) have a third 5Ghz band which they use as the mesh network. If you're connected to a dual band Mesh network the band you're connected to also has to act as the band for the mesh network effectively "halving" the speed.

I ended up getting 3 x Velops (which are significantly more expensive) but which are Tri-Band and support mesh in bridge mode. HN at the time were selling the triple pack for ~$500 while JB had them for $750. HN had run out of stock so I got JB to price match.

Now, I'm a power user, so these things matter to me. Google WiFi will probably be a great solution for the average user.:)

    • Indeed they lack advanced features, but they are super easy to use and setup. Would recommend.

    • what speed can you get with the google wifi and the velops

      vs

-just getting a repeater e.g xiaomi
-OR putting another access point or wifi router in another location

Would an average home really need these mesh wifi networks?

      • Would an average home really need these mesh wifi networks?

Most homes will run fine without mesh, assuming one router can reach the whole house and can handle all the WiFi devices connected to it.

-OR putting another access point or wifi router in another location

This would work "pretty well", but it's a smoother experience to have either just one router or to have mesh.

        • +1

A repeater essentially halves the maximum throughput. It has to receive the signal and re-transmit it.

The Google WiFi's should be a little bit faster than a repeater as while it suffers from the same limitation, it has 2 WiFi channels 2 use.

Note: All of this is assuming that that your backhaul is all wifi. If your Google Homes/access points are plugged into ethernet as their backhaul you should get full speed.

  • I get "Sorry, this colour / size combination is not currently available." when I try to buy online.
I've been looking for these a bit cheaper for a good while as well.

  • Remember it also band switches frequency when it feel like you cannot lock onto a frequency, unless the device your connecting has that capability.

    • That sounds like an awful feature. How does it decide which band it wants to use? Signal strength?

That's the problem with a lot of shit these days, try to make everything as noob friendly as possible for the technically inept and don't give options for people who do know what they're doing to tweak stuff.

  • Seems they have removed the purchase button ?

  • there is a bug for Google WIFI. you can’t force your mobile connect to 5GHZ, as 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz using same SSID. there is no solution yet.

Work around, disconnect the wifi and reconnect, you mobile will connect to 5ghz.

but, it is not an issue for most users. 2.4ghz suitable for them.

How is the ping for gaming?

    • It probably depends more on the ISP and server than the router or mesh network. Our WiFi speedtest pings are the same when connected to either a Netgear router or Google mesh, both at 5ms.

  • Can we still buy discounted gift cards from somewhere?

entertainment book - if you have access to one?

These aren't that good - do your research before purchasing. I got the Orbi and am very happy.

    • +1

Apart from a few advanced features I don't see any complaints. Tons of good reviews as well.
      Care to elaborate?

      • -1

Mostly that they're slow, they frequency hop and they don't have a dedicated backhaul. Most indepth reviews say that a two-station Orbi gets better coverage than the three-station Google setup.

        • I've not seen anything saying they're slow. But the other 2 don't really bother the average user.

    • i've only been hearing great reviews on these, so your feedback is important, TIA

  • Damn I had been waiting to get a set of these for this sort of price for ages… already sold out. Not sure if my local officeworks would match this given the nearest physical David Jones to me is over an hour away and they no longer have them online to buy.

  • Anyone received their Cash Rewards tracking email yet?

  • Paying money so Google can listen in and market to you more effectively? Sounds legit 🙃

  • Bargain!
    Bought my set for $330.
    Worth every penny!

  • Pricematched OW in Cannington, they only had dummy boxes though (all sealed in shrink-wrap). Even the one in their cabinet was an empty sealed box! Weird

Might only need one, I just want to use my smart bulbs and have better wifi at the other end of my place

  • Got this price matched at Office works (osborne park, WA) this evening. Cheers

  • +1

Not sure why so many negative comments. I’ve two of these covering my place and I find them great.

Super simple to set up. I’m not experiencing any halving of speed when not on the primary module. Being able to lock down my kids devices from adult sites and put them on a schedule are all great features.

Mine have been nothing but rock solid. Strong recommend from me (i realise that means very little)

    • They are definitely good devices for the average users. The reason it did attract negative comments from power users is due to its performance when compared to half decent routers.

I had bought my google wifi 3 pack and did a test before and after the installation. Before installation (with my TP-link router) i was getting 47mbps 2 rooms away from where the router is positioned. AFter installation, the speed dropped to 40mbps eventhough i had a gooogle wifi point sitting in that same room which is 2 rooms away from the main wifi point.

In summary, the mesh network does give a better coverage, however the speed is slower at locations where the solo router would cover anyways.

I also find that sometimes it takes 1-2minutes for devices to switch wifi point causing a lost of signal when moving about. Would be nice if the switching time is shorter or more seamless.

      Cheers!

  • Anyone got a photo of the instore price so I can try pricematch at officeworks?

    • Can't you price match with the website price? Still shows $349!

  • This morning I clicked on the image of the deal, showed that at OW and they reluctantly matched as the DJ link doesn't state its out of stock

  • has anyone had their order shipped?

  • I just asked in store and this promotion is running until September 5

  • Shipped!!
