If signing up to a long term contract usually

      • +1

true, true… it's a good deal if not tied to a contract I guess

    • +4

And a Netcomm too! Throw in a fancy ASUS router and then we're talking.

    • -2

They'd normally give free postage as well

      • Free postage or no lock-in contract. The choice is yours.

  • +5

I'm with AussieBoradband - overall I have had a very positive experience with them. However I feel recently (over the past 6-8 months) their quality has been slipping - our internet now will randomly go down at least once a week for a couple of hours.

Not using this as a forum to complain, just wanted to "warn" potential new customers that their service may have slackened a little in recent times.

    • Are you on HFC by any chance?

      • +1

Have there been issues with HFC?

        • +1

I have a few friends on HFC scattered around BNE and they are complaining that their connection gets dropped randomly from time to time. I told them that it could also be a problem with their line so churning might not do anything to help with that.

        • @geek001: If you're a gamer, a modem with 4G failover is literally priceless.

Many a DOTA2 game has been saved from a disconnect thanks to prepaid long expiry data sims.

          https://www.whistleout.com.au/MobilePhones/Carriers/Coles/Pe…

$180 a year is cheap insurance.

        • @MasterScythe: or go with Telstra/Vodafone

        • @TarquinOliverNimrod: They do cheaper 365day expiry sims?

Because carrier choice on NBN wont affect hardware outages\maintenance.

        • @MasterScythe: they have 4g backup modems

        • @TarquinOliverNimrod: Included in the price? So I could fake a line-issue if I want to download something over the blazingly fast 4G, rather than the cheap FTTN?

        • @MasterScythe: Your mobile backup connection is limited to speeds of up to 6Mbps for downloads and 1Mbps for uploads. Actual speeds will vary due to local conditions and content accessed.

      • Nah - FTTN

        • I think this depends on where you live. I do get outage notification emails regularly from ABB, so regularly in fact, I start to wonder about the reliability of their network but my POI is usually not on the list and the outage is usually for late at night or early in the morning. Whether the outage is due to NBN doing maintenance work or ABB doing maintenance work, I can never tell.

        • +2

Have you logged a support ticket? It could possibly be an issue with the aging copper network or lines inside your house, and not necessarily issues with ABB.

        • -1

          FTTN

          There's your problem.

    • +16

Well that's because you signed up with Aussie Boradband, operated by Borat's Australian cousin.

    • +8

Hi camel_racer can you please PM me with oyur contact details so we can investigate this one further? Cheers, ABB

      • Hi sorry - I missed this message. Will PM you soon.

      • Mate I got a call from ABB saying they are NOT honouring the free modem if not in a 24 month contract.
The free modem is only on a unlimited plans and 24 month contract.
        Can you confirm that?

        • Really?, I can see unlimited plans are all on 24 month contract ( i wont be entertaining contracts), however the other plans do not include a free modem?, can store rep advise?

        • @Polak: they changed it but I got a call from a abb rep and still got the free modem on no contract.

    • +1

What did ABB say about your situation?

    • If you're on FTTN, it's probably not ABB as such.

We're on FTTN and sync at 90/40. Life should be grand, but you can guarantee the internet will drop out every few hours and you have to wait for a resync. I've been with TPG and now ABB and it's exactly the same in every way.

Still worth lodging a ticket for, although I suspect if it ends up in NBN Cos hands you'll just get a "I plugged in the test modem and it synced therefore no problem" type response.

Could really have done with some bloody FTTP. At least you know it can't be blamed on "house wiring" like every fault on every DSL technology ever.

      • I have FTTN and never have drop outs. Maybe once that I can rmember in the last year

      • +1

My brother was connected to ABB FTTN last year and he also has the regular outages. Guess that’s why Malcolm Turnbull opted for FTTP at his place.

    • Dam i was looking forward to when my house gets in the nbn area, ive been with iinet for 9 years enough to see the fall of them from well run aussie support company to overseas call center garbage. Hope AusssieBroadband gets better

      • How many times did you need them?

    • Have you tried contacting ABB before blaming them on a public forum? Your issue might not even be caused by them..

    • I'll add my experience.
And I'm not even connected yet.

I signed my retired parents up for a service on the NBN on Saturday.
During the call I asked if there was a free modem for August, as I knew there was one for July.
I was told no. Not in August.

I sympathize with the sales team, apparently they're told spur of the moment that a promo is on.
But someone higher up dropped the (profanity) ball… big time…. don't make your staff accidental liars.

Suddenly, less than 10 business hours later, "Free Modem".
      And to top it all off, when I enquired if they would be kind enough to honor this, as it's less than 1 business day out;
I got a copy-paste reply (which starts with a 'Dear celeneyyl' which is not my screen name\handle).
So the Rep didn't even bother to type, or get my name right.
(ps. Hi Celeneyyl, I got your personalized reply :P)

      In addition, I was told that if I cancel my order and request my details purged, so I could do a new sign-up (I'm not connected yet);
      the "system would still know".

      I'm a security specialist. 16 years.
I have a natural dislike for companies who won't honor a purge request of PERSONAL information.

I was left with a really good feeling and confidience, after dealing with them on the phone for my parents.
But now, after being misled (although, I admit, not intentionally), it's a solid kick.

They were nice enough to offer me SOMETHING.
I'll show some respect and not reveal exactly what, but it wasn't equivalent value.

What a solid way to turn a literally PERFECT experience into a real Bitter One.

Couldn't even bother to get my handle\name right.

      • +1

I think they probably don’t understand how pm works… I seriously considering to cancel it since we haven’t paid anything yet. Why bother since so many other service providers out there!

        • +1

Sometimes they need to accept they work with IT professionals too.
I'd just LOVE to see what system they use that won't allow for data purging nor date corrections.

I mean, what's a modem, for the remaining 20 or 30 years of my parents life\service?
          They're not going to change.
Hell, I'd happily even lock into a contract to obtain it.

          Know what?
          I'm popping over to whirlpool.
          I'll be back.

  • +6

Free modem on a service that doesn't lock you into a contract is a win!

  • +1

Wow, can we purchase now and not start until service is connected? I live in an apartment, the building had hfc, but no connection inside individual units yet…

    • Don't do it…

  • Excellent! Just about to move to a new house and this is what I was waiting for.

  • Any ABB FTTP XB1 gamers here?
i am having a high ping for past few weeks and few other issues. not sure its COD related or something to do with the network.

    • Wireless?

      • tried both, but yes wireless for last 2 weeks

        • Are they Australian servers?
A priceless tip for international gaming is to have a 2nd router, that supports OpenVPN.
In that router, you use a high speed, low privacy node of your chosen VPN company to tunnel directly to their shores.

USA dota pings down from 500+ to 150ish using nord

    • +4

CoD is a bit all over the place since it still uses peer to peer servers for the game. It means you're at the whim of someone else's connection if you're not hosting the game.

    • +1

ABB FTTP XB1 gamer here - mostly on Fortnite or Battlefield. No issues with ping times.

  • If I leave after a month will I have to return the modem?

    • +1

      No

    • +1

I believe it's yours to keep.

  • +2

Aussie broadband - $79 per month, free modem, no set up fee.
TPG - $69 per month, free modem. $99 Set Up, or free on 18 month contract.

Looks like TPG is a better value in a long term?

    • +12

My complaint above noted, don't even get me started on TPG - I will never touch them again.

      • In 8 years I've been using ADSL internet from TPG, I only had a few minor issues which were quickly resolved.

      • Never had an issue with TPG. I got HFC NBN, constant 45 Mbps any time of day.

        • -8

Tpg doesnt offer HFC and 45mbps on hfc is pretty low speeds anyway.

        • +3

@TsunamiInTheHouse: Yeah they do. And on a 50NBN plan, 45 is pretty good.

        • @TsunamiInTheHouse: They do, I've got it

        • +1

          @TsunamiInTheHouse:
They do offer 50m download HFC NBN at 69.99. I am getting 45m down / 18m upload with servers in Australia

        • My personal experience with tpg on fttp was terrible. Initially speeds were as advertised, but after about a month I noticed congestion issues around peak times and speeds dropped from the advertised 25/2 to worse than 12Mbps down.

I was also plagued with random outages and disconnects.
Tpg tried blaming the hardware on my end but I tried with their cheap supplied modem and my r8000 and both were the same.

Since changing rsp's to a non-unlimited provider I get 95Mbps/35Mbps on my 100/50 and haven't had any issues or unscheduled outages in the last 18 months

    • +4

      Comparing Apples and Oranges

Though with the new NBN Pricing model, all the other RSP's have upped their CVC and the gap isn't as big as before. Maybe it's like comparing Oranges and Mandarines now.

    • +3

Exetel $59.99 per month, free modem $20 shipping, no setup on a 12 month contract.

      • +2

        It is Exetel though.

        • Haven't used them but their NBN reviews are good.

        • +1

@TarquinOliverNimrod: pre-NBN, I’ve used them all. I’ve got no crazy stories for any of them. I find communication is a two way street. I always got what i needed.

That said, to compare ABB with TPG, Exetel etc is hilarious. Like i never compared my Internode services with them, back in the day.

        • @YogaPants: I'm not saying they're "better", I'm saying are they $20 a month better?

        • +1

          Excretel

        • +1

          @YogaPants: Ditto here.

          I was amazed by their support team. Call went as such;

Remember, level 1 "I just answered the queue" level worker….

"Hi guys, I'm seeing low sync speeds, but my attenuation is good.
I also have a Broadcom chipset in my modem, and I'm hacking my SnR to be a solid 6db up and down.
Can you modify my line profile to target 66db regardless of quality, and I'll see if the modem error correction can handle the rest?"

          "Sure, that's done. Anything else?"

          "err…. no…. thanks!"

          A+ to srilankan tech support.

    • +1

it depends if you want to actually use your internet during waking hours or not.

        • lying about that?

The testing boxes have some flaws
          1) unless there's one on each node, then you're only testing some nodes
          2) (Like Speedtest) the destination servers are usualluy located on the RSP/ISPs network, so only test within the network, which RSP/ISPs give priority to SamKnows/SPeedtest.net traffic.
          3) It doesn't appear to monitor outages
          4) They don't test real world stuff like video Netflix/Stan/AFL/NRL/OS streaming, Gaming, Torrents (which is a great test as you're gathering packets for various networks & sources).

I know 4 poeple in our nieghbourhood who use TPG and buffering iview/netflix & kids complaining about gaming isn't unusual.

but hey if you're kicking goals with them good for you.

        • @supabrudda:

It seems like ur arguements are just assumptions or not practical

          1. How else do you propose a fair test? If 10s of thousands of real users/testers are not enough to satisfy you?

          2. How do you know ACCC testing uses speed tests.net. I’ve read the report quickly and didn’t see it.

          3. Which could mean ABB has more or less outages than others. You can’t judge someone for something that’s not tested

          4. Again, as always easy to criticise a independent test but can offer no practical solution

        • @cloudy:

10s of thousands of real users/testers

          Nope ~2000 volunteers

How do you know ACCC testing uses speed tests.net

Never said they did. Its just a dame flawed teatung model. They use their iwn servers, which like speedtest.net are locatedwithin RSP/ISP networks.

Which could mean ABB has more or less outages than others. You can’t judge someone for something that’s not tested

          Yep no disagreement there.

Again, as always easy to criticise a independent test but can offer no practical solution

Be transparent on testers locations and the tests themselves. And I did offer suggestions in 4) be here it is again, just for you

They don't test real world stuff like video Netflix/Stan/AFL/NRL/OS streaming, Gaming, Torrents (which is a great test as you're gathering packets for various networks & sources).

        • @supabrudda:

I believe testers change each report so over a year it will be 10s thousands, or close enough.

And lastly your suggestion of Netflix /other streaming service etc is assuming that it is all that matters is streaming. That in itself is not without flaw. First flaw is u assume that’s what’s important.

    • +2

I have been using TPG since 2013. Started with TPG ADSL2 and now on TPG NBN HFC network. Over 5 years, I have experienced only few issues. No complaints. I work from home connecting into company network via VPN servers in China, Singapore, US, etc and run company VOIP phone inside the VPN. No voice issue at all even you are on 2 hour audio conferences. Very reliable network with very low gitter and almost no packet drops for overseas communications.

Great technical and customer support as well.

      • $10 modem delivery

      • $20 non-refundable prepaid deposit

    • abb has the CVC graphs for all their exchanges to see how much bandwidth being used a day before.
      https://www.aussiebroadband.com.au/cvc-graphs/

currently with abb but perviously was with tpg.
when it comes to solving buffering and gaming lag tpg response was best services we can provide since i was in a contract they gave 2 shits if my issue was fixed or not and went for 3 months before i got out the contract with them.

only issue i had with abb was some gaming lag a month go and the issue was found and solved within a weeks time.

    • I was on TPG and now ABB. I have found no difference in the service. Literally sync at exactly the same speed, literally get the same drop outs, literally get the same speed test results at any time of day or night.

I mainly went with ABB because I figured TPG is already big enough. I want competition in the interwebs space. It's worth the extra few bucks a month to me. And it wasn't even a contract thing as I was already contract free with TPG.

If a few bucks a month is important to you, TPG is better value. Exetel is better again. I've had Extel ADSL for years at home - and still do at my workshop - and it's never had a problem. Still on a super old $50/month unlimited ADSL and unlimited phone calls plan.

      • +1

Sync speed won't change, and drop outs (if on FTTN) are generally a physical line issue - again not related to RSP.

The speed test results at different times are what is RSP dependent.

  • +3

Prefer this deal over the current one.

    • provided you already have a modem? if not, how is 1 mth $79 better than $149 (rrp)?

      • Agreed if you really need a modem then this is a good value. Personally I much prefer to use my ddwrt R8000 router (with a cheapo Belong Modem in bridge mode). Most modems provided by ISPs are quite restrictive and crap. Gumtree have a lot of ddwrt compatible routers that you could pick up for under $50.

        • +1

Agreed. A lot of things can be done with DDWRT. See this video for examples.

          https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MBCz3sUToMc

        • Does DDWRT on the R8000 improve speed over the stock firmware or just add features?

        • @Stix: No just awesome features and control.

        • @Stix: It just adds more features, for example, I use Transmission package on mine as a dedicated torrent downloader, run OpenVPN server to connect remotely into my home network or host ftp and SMB servers etc. All this on one device.

The wifi speed and range on DDWRT wouldn't be any better than the stock firmware.

  • +1

Wow solid deal… I missed out by a month, signed up thinking i had a router that would cover me, but it was only for FTTP not FTTB/N which im on. Had to stuff around and pay more.. But glad to be enjoying their service.

    • -1

Wait what? I didn't think FTTP/FTTN even mattered for the modem, why would it affect what modem you can use?

Isn't it just how the signal is transported i.e. fibre or copper? Why would you need a specific modem for FTTP v FTTN? Unless I've completely misunderstood.

      • I think they had a router only. They needed a modem router.

      • +3

FTTN requires an VDSL2 modem. FTTP does not require a modem.

  • +2

Signed up to previous free modem deal and have been disappointed.

Aussie Broadband only send out the modem when they connect you.
So you end up not being able to use the service until the modem arrives.

How about sending the modem out to the customer a few days before the service going live?

    • +3

I signed up - Got my modem before the service was connected.

    • +2

Hi Chupa Chup, normally the modem is sent a few days before the appointment/activation, apologies if the modem did not arrive prior :( - ABB

      • +2

I had to ask for the modem to be sent out first also, was told that it’s usually sent out once the service is activated. Didn’t make much sense to me.

  • +1

Have had a great experience signing up to ABB.

Would recommend them 100% - We have Fixed Wireless and everything is going smoothly so far.

  • +3

Well, this has come up at a good time now that Mungi is suspending their 100mbps plans, what are your plans ABB? No point switching if you are going to do the same and for the Mungi customers that already have a modem can you do the 1st month free deal?

    • I'm switching from Mungi also, I think the better deal is the $10 off a month for the first 6 months unless you need a modem.

      • first month free is better for me on the 100mbps plan, would save $99 :)

        • Definitely! But it's not available at the moment so you'll have to wait.

  • +2

Is this a clever tactic from ABB to pick up Mungi customers on 100 plans?

  • Received the modem (free) 2 weeks ago but NBN services haven't been activated yet. Not sure if ABB is too rich to give out modems first and not too worry about charging monthly service to recoup the cost of the modem back.

  • That'd be right, I just signed up for Aussie like 30 minutes ago and now see this… feelsbadman.jpg

Not that I really need it I guess ( though a free month instead might be nice hehe :p )
