I have the 80W one. Had to buy charging tips (from USB-A) from AliExpress to charge my Asus laptop that takes a 120W charger. It still charges though.

    • That's beyond the 100w Max for of cables, doesn't sound right.

      • My Asus takes a power brick if that's what you're meaning.

      • +4

The laptop may come with a 120W charger, but you can use a lower power one instead, it will just take longer to charge.
(If you go too low, it might still discharge while running & plugged in)

        • -3

          Username checks out

        • "abb" using a lower wattage charger I also thought would still charge/run a laptop although slower or not at all if running ( as long as voltage is same, correct connection and meets minimum wattage to run/charge ).

A few years ago doing I was doing exactly this with a Toshiba Ultrabook and to my great surprise it would not turn on any longer with all lights off. Had it looked at and repaired and needed a new power supplycontrlol circuit, but ended up getting a whole new mother board replaced under warranty ( although at 13 months after purchase and only 12 months included warranty, Kudos to Toshiba repair centre Gold Coast ).

I have done this again since with Acer laptops without problems, but pays to be aware of the possible damage.

word premium and word kogan, dont go well together.

    disclaimer:
got burn buying kogan products 3x and they all went to rubbish bin 3 hours from arrival. why? because i couldn't stand looking at their quality (website photos looks amazing though)

most important is the cells inside

These are wall chargers not portable ones.

      • you beat my ninja edit…..

    • +2

No idea why you're being neg'd - Kogan sells cheap crap.

      • it may have been before the ninja edit when he was comparing cells from powerbanks made by xiaomi, blitzwolf, etc

but this kogan charger is not crap, it's a rebadge of LVSUN. search for them on Amazon and AliExpress.

        • Even the LVSUN is a rebadge. Xiaomi even stuck their logo on one.

        • @Clear:

So Xiaomi is the original then? Link? Maybe you can bring us a deal on the original ;)

        • @CVonC: Nope an OEM/ODM factory was. Everyone else just had their logo slapped on. Variants of this charger have existed for years.

        • @Clear:

lol figures. Wonder if the Xiaomi one is any cheaper? Or any other Chinese brand out there?

  • Good deal! These are really handy for travel - can charge 2 phones plus watch and camera from a single wall plug. I wish I could find a decent price for a dual Type C version though, so we can charge 2 phones at full speed.

  • +4

I have both and would recommend both.
Paid $29 for 40w in June
Paid $49 for 80w in Jan

    • What's the length of the cable?

      • +2

Power cable looks to be about 1-1.2m long
        Bundled USB-C is probably 50cm

        • Thanks man

  • Just a little short of 20 volts @ 3.25 amps that I wanted but this should be good enough for my Xiaomi 13 …

It should also quick charge iPad Pros.

    • Can someone confirm if this will fast charge the 12.8 ipad pro?

Couldn't resist getting the 40W one lol. Let you know if it can fast charge my 12.9 ipad pro once it arrives.

      • My Xiaomi Air 13.3 2017 edition charges fine with this one. Do you have the notebook pro or 2018 model?

      • Yes my iPad Pro 10.5 quick charges with the 40W Kogan charger and the Apple store bought USB-C to lightning cable a price premium but if anything breaks within a year they will replace the cable with no hassles.

No idea on 3rd party USB-C to lightning cables yet to own any.

  • +1

Curious to see what REAL speeds would be when the 40W charger is under load considering one QC port is up to 18W.

    • I assume that the type C charges at full 40W when the USB A ports are not being used.

    • -1

Hey Clear, any chance of a bargain on a real 5 Port QC charger like this one you posted earlier in the year? Thanks.

      • +1

I'll check with Tronsmart and see if they're going to have a restock since Geek have next to nothing instock.

        • Awesome, thanks!

  • Worth pointing out that the 80W charger doesn't ship until 24/9/18.

    • +1

You can get it from AliExpress for $49.99 USD but it comes with a bunch of different laptop tips (USB-A) where as the Kogan one does not.

All the above information are from their respective manual

    • So the 80W ver supplies 3A on each port? If I reading it right.

If so, this will be instant buy!

      • +1

I don't think the 80W is a good deal, given the the 40W is less than half the price.

        • +3

The price is not the only differentiator. It really depends on what you are charging, or how many devices you are charging (and what output you need). 40W version can only deliver about 36 Watt (via USB-C), where as the 80W version can output 54 Watts (via USB-C).

        • @Bimo is right. You're better off getting 2 40w, you'll get 6 ports total! Not to mention 2 units! Add a few bucks for a double adapter and you're still ahead.

        • @atronic: Where do you get information on how much each charger can output?

        • +3

          @Bimo:

It's in RichardL's post above (taken from the manuals on the Kogan website).

40W charger does 37.5W max (15V/2.5A) over USB-C (Bimo used the 18V/2A or 12V/3A to calculate 36W, but the 15V output is higher).
          80W charger does 54W max (18V/3A) over USB-C.

If you don't have anything over 36W (at 5V/18V) or 37.5W (at 15V), then the 40W charger is fine, and perhaps buying two might be a better option for you.

But if you have stuff that requires more than 36W/37.5W (eg. a laptop or docked Nintendo Switch), then the 40W is definitely NOT a better option. (There's no point having two chargers, when neither of them will charge your 40W+ device!) ;)

        • @caprimulgus: Good point. My laptop I think needed 60 or 65W.

      • Will only support the 3A if you have a compatible Qualcomm QuickCharge 3.0 device.
Otherwise it will deliver the max USB-A standard which is 5V/2.4A (12W) (only if the connected device can accept that)

        • D'OH!

Was thinking to use this as Raspberry Pi power supply.

          Thx anyhow.

        • @Yummy: That would be pretty cool, but unfortunately it wont work :(

        • Otherwise it will deliver the max USB-A standard which is 5V/2.4A (12W) (only if the connected device can accept that)

I have a USB-A to N07 laptop tip cable and it charges my Asus laptop which is certainly not 12W.

      • So the 80W ver supplies 3A on each port? If I reading it right.

        Yes but not at the same time depending on the voltage. For example it can't supply 18V @ 3A via USB-C + 4x 16V @ 3A via USB-A. But 4x 5V @ 3A should be possible.

    • Thanks!

    • That's weird, no 20V from USB C? And is there such standard for 20V from USB A?

      • You'll find that most chargers with 60W+ will have 20V via USB-PD.

        • True, but as far as I know USB PD can only be delivered through USB C (not A)

        • @tukanglistrik:

As I wrote above, I have a USB-A cable to N07 (19V) tip that charges my Asus laptop using the 80W charger.

        • @CVonC: I had read that, but just wondering if this exists in the USB PD standard specification.

        • @CVonC:
From what I can make out it 'tricks' the QC into giving it the higher voltages for the laptop charging out of the USB-A ports
I wonder if those cables work on the 40w version too, I can't see a 3 port LVSUN.
Just to confirm, you're charging your asus laptop from the Kogan branded 80W?

        • @based:

From what I can make out it 'tricks' the QC into giving it the higher voltages for the laptop charging out of the USB-A ports

          Seems plausible

I wonder if those cables work on the 40w version too, I can't see a 3 port LVSUN.

This should be it. Comes with the laptop tips too.

Just to confirm, you're charging your asus laptop from the Kogan branded 80W?

Yup with the LVSUN 3-pin laptop tip + USB-A cable.

Anyone tried the 40W charger with a Nintendo Switch in the dock?

The Switch dock uses 15V/2.6A (39W), which is what the official Nintendo AC Adapter supplies. However, I have read people suggest that it will work with chargers that are 15V with above/at least 2A (unconfirmed). Curious if it would work with this charger, given the 15V/2.5A (37.5W) rating is not that far off what the official charger supplies.

The 40W charger would make a pretty handy travel charger that could be used as a 3-port charger for charging multiple devices at night OR as a power source for the Switch dock by itself (if that does work). It couldn't do both at the same time, but it would save having to bring two chargers!

    • +1

I just got mine today and can confirm that it is working on the switch when docked with the supplied usb-c cable and it charges up while playing with the Kogan 40W charger.

      • Oh wow, nice! I may have to grab one next time they're on sale!

        Thanks for reporting back!

  • "Someone in Beaumaris bought a

    • Very nice, sister!

  • So the 40w one would be good for a Pixel 2 XL? not many chargers seem to have PD which they support.

  • -1

Wouldn't it have been better if not all ports are QC so it doesn't wear out phone battery life?

    • +1

I believe this problem is more a technicality than it is reality when within tolerance for Li-ion battery technology. When the battery of a device is fully charged, the charging should cut off and then it sits idle until the battery drops one or two percent.

If you want to prolong the life of Li-ion batteries it's probably better to not charge to 100% or let the battery go flat, instead charge 20 up to 80%.

This info is widely available from tech sites.

USB-C PD is an open industry standard which does much the same thing as QC 3.0 without licensing fees.

      • +1

QC4+ would be the best of both worlds. USB-PD 3.0 compliant and QC4+ which has been optimised to be more efficient on speed, power and battery life.

  • Can 80W charge MacBook Pro 13" (2016)?

    • +1

I know this charger will definitely charge as I've used a USB-A port to (extremely) slow charge my 2016 MBP 13". It will charge slower than the regular charger as this is 37.5w while the in-the-box charger is 60w

If anyone has information on how much slower this charging is and whether this will affect the processor increasing speed when running on charge I would be very grateful!

    • Have a look through the Questions & Answers on the equivalent LVSUN branded Amazon link

  • The 80w is excellent - one travel charger for all my devices including my Lenovo X1

  • Anyone know the cable length from wall outlet?

  • I have the 40w version, while charging my XPS 13 2-in-1, it makes the laptop metallic parts very slightly tingling. While charging my phone (Redmi 2), it messes up the touchscreen.

    • Is the smartphone using the original cable or a 3rd party? My Pixel 2 does some weird stuff too when I use 3rd party charge cables….independent of the outlet.

      • I don't have the original cable but every single cable I tried using this charger messes up the touchscreen. No other charger (including the original charger) has this issue.

  • Thank you, I've got one!

  • Should I get the 80W 5 Port one or the Anker PowerPort+ on Amazon (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/395262)?

    • +1

If you don't have any PD devices over 30W, then the Anker is fine, and I would trust that to have much better build quality.

If you have devices more than 30W, then the 80W Kogan will obviously be better (can do 54W over PD).

      • Thank you for the advice!
I'm assuming 80W is overkill for a Pixel phone or Nintendo Switch?

        • +2

For most handheld devices (phones, powerbanks etc), the 80W is probably overkill, and the 40W charger would be fine.

For charging the Switch in handheld/tabletop, either one will do. The Switch itself will take 18W max through USB-C PD, so both will charge at max speed.

HOWEVER, if you want to use it to power the Switch in docked mode, that is a bit more complicated. The dock requires much higher power to operate, using the 15V PD profile. As I explained in a comment above, the official Nintendo charger supplies 15V/2.6A (39W) to the dock, however some people have claimed to get the dock to work with less than 2.6A (this is unconfirmed).

The Kogan 80W is rated for 15V/3A (45W), so should be able to supply the 15V/2.6A (39W) that will power the Switch in docked mode. The Kogan 40W is only rated for 15V 2.5A (37.5W), which is 0.1A or 1.5W short of the official charger. However, it MAY work, if the claims of running the dock with less than 2.6A are in fact true.

tl:dr - The 80W is not necessarily overkill for the Nintendo Switch, if you want to power it in docked mode. It is unclear whether or not the 40W will power the dock properly, whereas the 80W definitely should. If you just want to charge the Switch without using the dock, then the 40W is absolutely fine.

  • Averell on 06/08/2018 - 15:59 new

I bought the Kogan 80W some months back. Some cons:
    1. Big and heavy
    2. All USB-A ports are quick-charge enabled. I don't like this as it will shorten my phone's battery life. Just one or two ports with quick charge is better.

BTW, I spent only $29 (and some then-expiring Kogan vouchers) for the Kogan one

    • Don't understand why you're getting negged -_-
