What is Quick Charge 3.0 and VoltIQ?

Qualcomm's Quick Charge 3.0 technology is 4x faster than conventional charging and up to 40% quicker than Quick Charge 2.0. It typically charges a compatible device from 0% to 80% in 35 minutes. It achieves this by increasing the voltage from 3.6V to 20V with 200mV increments. This technology is backwards compatible with Quick Charge 2.0, Samsung AFC and Huawei FCP which is capable of charging a 3500mAh battery from 0% to 60% in 30 minutes.

VoltIQ charges up to 5V/2.4A in each port simultaneously for devices that are not using QC technology, like the iPhone, iPad and Nexus series phones.

Thanks Clear, The more stuff I buy the more this will come in handy,

I already would have 3 ports used every night and I am thinking about getting an android tablet as well

    • +3

I already have two 5 port chargers and they're not enough!

      • +3

lol, the 3 I mentioned above is just at night, there is other stuff I recharge during the day.

It's all OzBargains fault, life was so much simpler before I discovered this site.

        • +3

All those Xiaomi power bank deals are to blame!

        • +1

True, the crackdown on importing power banks was the universes was of saying 'you've got enough'.

        • @xev:

          What was the crackdown?

I have seen it mentioned before but I can't find anything about it.

        • +1

          @spaceflight:

Apparently, customs aren't letting items such as power banks through, they get sent back. So sites like Gearbest etc don't sell them to Australians anymore.

        • @xev: Seems to be just power banks in small numbers though as Tronsmart sent several hundred to Tronsmart AU without issue 🤔

        • @xev: But why are power banks getting sent back? Is it illegal?

        • @Clear: Customs are just fickle.

I had an order of 4 xioami dvrs rejected, yet managed to have around 400 LiPoly batteries in one parcel delivered the same week

In terms of risk, the xiaomi dvrs are on the low end, the 400 LiPoly batteries much higher.

        • @MorriJ: Yup huge PITA. Each time the sellers find a new way customs pick up and stop it.

        • @MorriJ:

          Customs are just fickle.

As is any government department. Quarantine and airport security are notorious for interpretation of the law based on the person you get inspecting your bags.

@spaceflight: there is no crack down from our end ….. lithium batteries on planes are the issue. There are restrictions on the size of lithium batteries that can be on aircraft incase they ignite …
So many companies have taken the easy path and don't ship via air due to paper work involved. Sea freight no problems on size.

Australian customs don't send them back, not sure where that urban myth originated, it's sellers not wanting freight companies eg china post sending them back before they even leave china.

Hobbyking used to limit the size and qty of batteries you could order and they would ship from overseas and method used to stay within the guidelines. RC model owners knew about the issue before phone owners did about air freight and batteries…. RC model owners know a lot about batteries as they consume a lot, and recharge a lot for their models.

Thank the crap devices like hoverboards burning down houses, and the few mobile phones igniting on planes making it to the headlines and for setting guidelines for the size of batteries that can be shipped via air.

You might ask why is a 5 port quick charger needed for night time charging, over let's say 8 hours, and costing a premium. Answer is it isn't, as most devices would charge fully at standard charge rate and it would better for battery life recharge cycles and capacity.

      • +3

yeah, my QC charger lives in my bag, I charge from a 1 amp Samsung orphan at night.

Hey Clear, I was looking to buy another USB-A/USB-C 5 port chargers but it's almost doubled in price :O https://www.geekbuying.com/item/Tronsmart-USB-PD-Type-C-Char…
Any chances of a discount in the foreseeable future?
P.S. Loved your senate hearing. Cushion really worked.

    • Is there anything like this with USB-PD and QC3.0 together yet?

  • Must hold on.
I have a 7 way power board with 5 individual chargers & 2 dual chargers. 4 qc. Working just fine.

  • +1

    Wow! 5 Qc 3 ports!

    • +3

      No USB-PD unfortunately.

      • True.
I have the QC2 version of this.
I only have a Switch that requires USB-PD.

        USB-PD 3 way multiport charger?
        Pls Clear/GB/Tronsmart :D

        • +15

New USB-PD products from Tronsmart are on the way 😉

        • @Clear: and our thirsty phones await them!

        • @Clear:
          Transfers money into Citibank account

        • @Clear:

How about chargers with native AU plugs?

        • @kevlarman: Now that they have an Amazon AU store I've been pestering them frequently for it. Fingers crossed the next gen chargers will have it.

        • +2

@Clear: Provided the multi-port charges just let me pick a fig-8 type cable I'm happy. Fig-8 cables are easy, cheap, abundant (if one breaks) and very convenient when international plugs are needed. I like the way a fig-8 cable beings the multi port charger closer to me (useful in hotel rooms where power points are often inconveniently located). Then I can use a short or long USB cable.

        • @nonpop:

Yep, those bigger chargers with a figure-8 cable are easy, but for the compact ones that plug directly into a powerpoint (like many of the 2-port chargers) they only come with US/UK/Euro pins. Blitzwolf is the only one I've seen who cater to the AU market.

      • Sorry for asking, but can you please explain what usb-pd is for and what device supports it?

Is it for laptop with type-c charger and MBP etc?

  • +2

Thanks just what I needed for holiday. Bought.

  • Any deals on USB-c to USB-c cables? And maybe a car charger to suit, to rapid charge my pixel 2.

  • Guess you need to buy another power lead for this as there is no option FOR AU plug.. :-(

    • Unfortunately no AU cable but most people.should have a figure 8 lying around from an old DVD player or something hopefully. Included cable.is good if you intend to travel overseas.

  • +1

Will this fast charge Samsung S9+ with USB C or will it be slow?

    • This doesn't have USB C PD so it will not charge at the full speed.

  • Is this better than the Blitzwolf BW-S7?

    • Significantly better. That BlitzWolf is a 40w charger with one QC 3.0 port while this Tronsmart has five QC 3.0 ports.

      • Did QC 3.0 make any item charge faster?

        • Yes

        • +1

My post explains how the tech itself works, but you're going to need a QC compatible device to take full advantage of it.

What do you plan on charging?

        • I just want the best charge for my devices when I travel i.e. camera gear, batteries, GoPro, Powerbanks?

        • +1

          @YellowKnight:

I just want the best charge for my devices when I travel i.e. camera gear, batteries, GoPro, Powerbanks?

You want the best charge or the fastest charge? They're not the same.

  • OP in the description it says this supports Huawei FCP, my understanding is it also requires a special USB-C cable that delivers higher amp to support FCP.

Do you know if there's any good 3rd party manufacturer that sells one?

    • Huawei have two fast charge technologies. What you're probably thinking of is SuperCharge that uses a USB-C cable and charges at 5amps.

Huawei FCP is basically their rebranded version of QC like Samsung's AFC.

      • +1

Oh yes indeed, I was thinking SuperCharge…

There's no third party charger that supports SC afaik right?

        • +1

Not that I'm aware of. Like Dash Charge and VOOC, it hasn't been licensed out to 3rd parties.

  • +1

Just a question… but does anyone notice internal batteries dying quicker with all this 'quick charge' tech around now?

    • +1

Never conducted a proper test but I thought my Axon 7 didn't last as long when charged using qc3 compared to the standard 5v 2a charger so I stopped using qc3.

    • +1

they get hotter on qc3 so voltage would read higher than when cold ….. run over night as the battery cools and it takes a bit more charge ….. QC is to get people going when the phone is flat or they are about to head out …. it’s defintely not gentle on batteries.
i do normal 2.1 amp charge 90% of the time.

    • Over the long term there will be an impact as the battery gets hotter while it is charging.

Over the life of the phone the difference is minimal.

  • Does it come in white ?

  • +1

    code fully used.

  • +1

    Got this message -
'This coupon code has ultimately reached the limitation usage times.'

    • Yes missed out too

  • Does this work with Motorola TurboCharge?

    • Yes. Motorola TurboCharge is QC2.0.

      • Cheers, will consider getting one next time

      • TurboCharge also works with USB C PD :)

        • Yeah their turbopower has a QC 3.0 version with USB-C Fast Charging. Motorola made their standard a little complicated.

  • Damn I missed out

  • Have one of these from a while back. Best charger I've had. I've been looking for another deal to pick up another unit, but unfortunately missed this one.

  • Missed it, OP any chance of more stock?

    • +3

I'll see if I can secure more stock tomorrow.

      • Op any more stock?

        • Haven't managed to get anymore on the US plug as that's all been sold. I'm still trying on the others.

  • Would this work with a USB A to USB-C cable to charge laptops like a MacBook?

    • +1

You'd want a USB-PD charger for the MacBook.

  • I think I got mine for $45 or so. Lives on my desk and I use it every day
