I spent 970 on this and it is fantastic, fits perfectly in my 86.

If you are looking, please keep in mind it is not (entirely) plug and play, I had to have a cable harness made up so I could keep my OEM reverse camera.

This is also for my 86. Do you know the details around the reverse camera wiring? I'm nifty with a soldering iron, as long as I know what goes where.

      • I nearly bought this, but I ended up going to Performance Car Audio in Ringwood.

        https://carboncarsystems.com.au/shop/installation-accessorie…

They claim a few things need adaptors:
        Antenna Adapter
        Power Adapters
        Speaker Adapters
        Reverse Camera Adapter
        USB Adapter

But I only remember getting the antenna, camera and USB done. Give it some research, you very well may be able to do it yourself!

        • I've already got the antenna and USB for a previous HU - I also wired the camera myself but every unit is different usually.

  • Stinger make plugnplay harnesses to keep OEM reverse cameras

This one's half the price, also for 200mm Toyotas. How horrible is it?

    • It's a great unit if you don't want Android Auto or Car Play. That's why I mentioned those features specifically in the title.

Never had Android Auto before, what do you use it for? Generally I only use the head unit to connect to my phone to play music.

But I'm most worried about boot times, I've heard of cheap head units taking MINUTES to boot every time you start the car.

          @xrailgun Glad you asked.
Android Auto is NOT normal android. It is nothing like the slow chinese android headnunits that take minutes to start up and are slow anyway. Android auto is an official lightweight companion to your android phone, where you can share certain apps to the head unit screen. A good example is google maps, which is super faster and responsive. It doesnt need any updates, doesn't crash, doesnt need configuration. Just plug your phone into your headunit and it'll all start working.

I have one of these cheap android chinese head units and they are terrible. I am upgrading to this tomorrow.

        • @Kill Joy: Thank you for the clarification!

But what if you didn't bring your phone alone? What can Android Auto do on its own?

        • +1

          @xrailgun:

Nothing unfortunately. It needs a phone to work.

  • Does it have inbuilt GPS and Map? I mean if you don't connect your phone.

    • It has a Sat Nav option that isn't working for me. I'd be upset, but I always have my phone on me haha

      Plus Waze is pretty snazzy!

      • I think satnav is a hardware accessory. Android auto and Car Play serve those functionalities.

  • I'm confused, is it a headunit or a phone :D

Happy to answer any questions, DDX917WS / 2013 SUBARU FORESTER 2.5i owner.
The DDX916WS, DDX917WS, DDX918WS don't have a lot of differences behind the scenes (I think the 918 might have HDMI if not mistaken, nice!).

I used a USB adaptor to get the USB port inside the centre console working with this unit.
I used a Subaru -> ISO and and ISO -> Kenwood adaptor, to save some room and simplify it i cut the ISO plugs off both and soldered them so i had a single Subaru -> Kenwood, (am an electronics tech, so solder joints are good and heat-shrink used, non of that twisted wire and electrical tape crap).

In my vehicle there is a separate screen for the reverse camera, i do intend to dig up the sig wire and run the reverse cam to the head unit at some point, the DDX has a larger, higher res screen.

There was an issue with some head units in Subarus where connecting the headlight on wire would blow a fuse or cause some other fault if too much current was drawn from the lights in an after market head unit, it is a non issue with the DDX as the DDX powers it's own lights/backlights, and just uses the headlight wire as a signal.
Mention this as some installers don't connect the headlight wire because of past issues.

RE: Android Auto, it's pretty great.
If i have an appointment in google calendar that includes a time and an address the nav automatically offers to option to go there at about the correct time.
If you have a Google play music sub you can play just about anything you want by asking for it( OK Google, play xxxxx).

Downsides, this thing has some horsepower, and i see it as a missed opportunity.
There is a built in compass that is near useless, would be great if it could at least do headings in degrees at least as an option.

For the 4x4 guys having an on screen gimbal representing pitch and roll could be handy and only needs a bit of code and gyro / accelerometer.

Would also be great to have some OBD2 functionality.

Of course this all has to be considered carefully, can't have drivers being distracted by functionality.
