  • Can anyone who received their drives confirm which drives are inside/what is needed to get them working in a PC?

To get HDD working in PC use the provided USB cable OR shuck and you can connect direct to your PC SATA cable if you disable the 3.3V SATA line in your PC SATA cable (various techniques explained earlier).

WARNING: This HDD and external case implement hardware data encryption. If you shuck and connect HDD direct to your PC SATA, MS Windows will modify the MBR and partition table on the HDD which will destroy the HDD encryption. Not a problem if you have no data on HDD and are happy to lose the hardware data encryption. However, if you later want to return HDD to its original external case it will no longer work in that case unless you destroy the hardware data encryption function in that external case. This can be done by cutting the power line VCC on the external case encryption chip (Pin 8 on the Winbond chip). 60 second job (many videos online) and your external case will be ready to accept any SATA based HDD original or otherwise.

      • I don't know if these do employ encryption without activating it in the included tools, as I just shucked one that I was testing and the one file that I added was still readable. I only added one file, but the stuff already on it was also readable. It did cause my BIOS to not like the drive though, I needed to hot plug it and then wipe it before it would boot successfully, error code was due to a SATA device error. It's working fine after the wipe.

    TADA just got them today.
The people are correct its a white WD label drive.

    Specs
    WD80EZAZ (White label with metal strips) = US7SAL080 = Ultrastar He10-8 SATA (3.3v reset, source WDBBGB0080HBK)

    • I'll second that, I got one today, same drive model. Wasn't packed the greatest, just one string of air pillows in a box much larger than the packaging, so we'll see how it fares.

      • Mine must have been packed by the same person

        • Same again, my box was all smashed up, but copying at a solid 145mb/ second so looking good so far.

      • Seems to be working fine about three days of different bad sector scans. I'm loading it up with data now, so that's the last hurdle before I'm happy with it.

      • Mine was the same but the drive has rubber dampeners in it plus the WD box is packed well

        Testing it out now too

  • Does anyone know if the 4TB version has the same WD drives (i.e. can be shucked into a PC with mod to 3.3v cable)?
This is the listing I'm talking about: https://www.amazon.com.au/Book-Desktop-External-Drive-WDBBGB…

Anything below 8TB doesn't contain the same line of drives that these do, they are just your regular blues but may be white label versions. The 8TB and 10TB are popular as they contain drives thay are extremely similar to the WD Reds, which are based off HGST drives (seems to be the most reliable manufacturer now, even though they are owned by WD).

If it's cheaper than a bare drive, go for it, but they won't be the bargain that this is in terms of drive quality.

  • I got around to shucking mine using credit cards but I broke one of the clips oh well

My RAID controller seems to either not supply 3.3v power or support PWDIS on the 3.3V so it worked straight up without covering the 3.3V line!

It seems to be clearing the "foreign" config on it now so hoping I can import it as a NON-RAID disk to try it out

If it works fine hell of a bargain drive for HGST helium filled similar to enterprise level

Edit i see the price is now $227

    • Thanks for the update bugger I just couldn’t resist getting another one at that price!

I was holding out at $243

    • Back up to $243!

      Early bird gets the worm!

  • Should i do a test on the hard drive (for bad sectors) before shucking it and installing it into my microserver?
