Not sure why we don't get the 4GB version in Australia like overseas, BUT for someone who wants a phone off the shelf, Australian warranty, Australian charger, band 28, NFC, and nothing to reflash and gets OTA, these seem like great value phones.

    And it's android One.

    • +3

Nokia's fault for making a 3GB version so Australian bully retailers can buy it cheaper and pretend to be more competitive against overseas businesses selling the 4GB version.
My last Nokia was the E72, a premium business class phone they supplied with a 10cm long data/charging cable.
That was their latest mistake before they went bankrupt so let's see if they have learned from the past.

      • -2

Nokia mobile division is now run by Foxconn.

        • +7

o.O HMD runs it, Foxconn manufactures…

        • -2

@Pikaloo: Basically they're still the same people from Nokia bankrupt brand.
The power of the business where people escape liabilities (bankruptcy) with creditors and yet they're still able to open under the same business style/name.

        • +1

yep, HMD markets it, Foxconn makes it, and android one so Google updates it.

MG is also nolonger british, now just a brand China bought, same with Quad and many other "brands".

        • +10

          @dealhunt:

same people from Nokia bankrupt brand.

WTF are you talking about? Which version of Nokia ever went broke?
They just lost sales, and the Finns sold their mobile business to Microsoft, who failed to make anything of it.
The brand now belongs to another Finnish company, HMD, closely related to the old Nokia, with a lot of Nokia engineers.

Nokia mobile division is now run by Foxconn.

No, Foxconn bought the "Sharp" brand for their own designs. They make Nokias in the same way they make iPhones.

        • @manic:
          Which Nokia Engineers??

        • +1

          @costas60:

"The similarities between HMD and Nokia are so numerous, it is almost suspicious. HMD, like Nokia, is a Finnish company. Nearly all of HMD's executives are former Nokia employees. HMD's headquarters is actually across the street from Nokia HQ. HMD is not Nokia, and Nokia doesn't hold any investment in HMD, but it seems unlikely that two companies could be any closer while still being legally and financially distinct."

      • The most expensive Apple iPhone X only has 3GB of memory. I assume that’s plenty for a smartphone.

        • +3

Apple manages memory differently to Android, so you're not really comparing apples to apples. More like apples to androids

    • I can't speak for the 2018 model, but on the 2017 Nokia 6 the NFC was very poor. It wouldn't register most on a lot of the machines without a bit of messing around, was faster just to pull out my card. I thought it was an issue with the machines, but with my current phone the NFC is flawless and working without physical contact with the machine also. I know it wasn't my phone specifically as I posted on Reddit and people has similar issues with it.

Again, this is about the 2017 model so not sure if they improved it with the Nokia 6.1. Something to consider if you plan on utilizing NFC a lot and if they haven't improved it.

4GB/64GB version available from Amazon AU for $345 delivered here:

  • +8

    Anywhere price match this?

    Would rather not support Gerry.

Any major differences between this and the 6.1 2018 / this exact same one on eBay?

    • Yeah also what's the difference between this and the Nokia 6 32GB which Officeworks sells for $298 (other than the one from Officeworks comes with Android 7.1).

      https://www.officeworks.com.au/shop/officeworks/p/nokia-6-32…

      • HN one will give more security and feature updates (android one, updates are pretty quick and from Google)

        • -2

Yeah personally there's no way i would be paying $29 more for that when i could go to Officeworks and buy the Nokia 6 32GB model from there.

        • @hollykryten:

          Alright.

I think you might get better performance with this one, but haven't checked.

        • +6

Nope. Android One devices are still updated through the OEM (Nokia), Android One just means Google is there to whinge and whine if the OEM doesn't deliver.

In the case of Nokia, they always had almost stock devices and recently they decided they might as well make all their new devices on Android One.
Because they update their older devices as frequently as the Android One requires.

The difference between the phones is one is the 2017 version and the other is the 2018 version. Both will get two years of major updates and three years of security updates. Obviously 2018 will last one year longer.

        • @garratt torlesse:

          Ah okay.

Still glad this gets a year longer.

Does it get a better soc to?

        • @hollykryten:
Last year's model noway year's as good as the one in on sale now .

      • OW phone is 2017 model?

        • I would have thought that it would be still quite good even if it's last years model.

      • +3

Pretty different hardware, the 6.1 (2018) has SD 630 vs old slowmo SD 430 on 6.

      • The Officeworks one is the older Nokia 6 (2017), the giveaway is the MicroUSB charge cable.

        https://www.gsmarena.com/compare.php3?idPhone2=8972&idPhone1…

Biggest difference is SD630 vs SD430 SOC.

    • No difference .
And only JB Hi Fi are the other stockist.

      • -5

Well wouldn't it be better paying out the $298 for the Nokia 6 32GB from Officeworks rather than paying more for this one in this deal?. $327 v $328. Even although the one from Officeworks has a different model number so there's no chance of a price match there at Harvey Norman.

        • +1

As I said earlier, less software updates. I like security and quick updates to fix security holes so I pretty much need Android One.

        • -1

          @haboutnnah:

Well then go pay the extra $29 and you'll be happy. :)

        • +1

          @hollykryten:

          wouldn't it be better

sort of implies there is little to no benefit, so that's what I was replying to :)

        • +6

HN isn't going to price match this year's model with last year's. You don't think it's worth $29 to have the version that's 15 months newer? With a Snapdragon 630 instead of the 430? The newest Android version instead of 7.1.1 (apparently upgradeable to 8.0)? If I was going to buy last year's model I'd want to be saving more than $29!

        • @JerryB:

Yeah you're right you got me there.

        • +1

@haboutnnah: the 2018 model is Treble compliant, the 2017 model isn't, so the 2018 has Oreo already available and they have beta Android P …. with final release as OTA soon.

          The 2017 won't see android P I'd guess.

        • @garage sale:

Correct! I'm glad someone is commenting after doing some thorough reading and fact/spec checking. The AU local version was released with Oreo 8.1, the Chinese with 7.1/.1

Just make sure you get a TA-1068 if getting from ebay or Grey Import as that has 8.1 from preloaded and will update via OTA here in AU. Can get a 4GB/64GB delivered now for $282.59 from reputable seller using code on ebay. I got mine from there few months ago and so far happy with phone, but still kind of prefer using my Moto G5+ lol.

          https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/NEW-Nokia-6-1-2018-TA-1068-5-5-4…

        • @ozhunter68:

still kind of prefer using my Moto G5+

Why is that? I'm about to rage quit using my G5+ because the promised Oreo update is taking so long.

        • +3

          @pennypacker:

To be fair to this Black Nokia 6.1 ( 2018 ) TA-1068 4GB/64GB that I got a few months ago, I have not used it much yet, well not as a daily use phone yet anyway, but have used it a fair bit at home mainly with wifi, and forced to use with sim on 3G/4G just to be able to get OTA updates through successfully ( that's another story ).

In the first few days after playing with it and setting it up, I think I was attempting to update OTA after receiving a regular notification through system update, it did a weird shut down and took me a few different attempts some time later to get it started again to my relief as it was purchased as grey import through ebay through qd_au ( one of the better sellers on there and had nothing to do/blame on them ). After reading many comments on the Nokia forum and reviews, there were issues updating after the May update all around the world with various model number Nokia 6.1's. After that had a lot of trouble working out how to smoothly get 2 further updates, finally worked out it's easier to just put a sim in it and do it via 3G/4G for now.

That is one part of it, but the Moto G5+ just works well 99% of the time, updates and all ( even if still on 7.1 with May security update ). I put Oreo launcher on all my phones to get a more uniform experience going from one to the other, and not having Oreo on this does not make a big difference to me ( the Moto might even slow down a little after the update, maybe not but who knows for now ). As I live in semi regional/rural area with no broadband available yet ( will be here in a few months ), strength of reception, not only having all the necessary bands is important for me, as I usually juggle between three phones as hotspot/phone/youtubing etc., and although the G5+ is not the best, the Nokia is a little weaker as well as only Cat 4 modem ( G5+ has Cat 6 ).

I loved my old Nexus 4 few years ago, not only for the nice form factor and quality display, great value and speed ( until 4G became widespread lol ), I fell in love with the clean simple Vanilla Android os and regular updates ( can't say the same for my heavily slowed down Neus 7 2012 ). After using Sony and Huawei's which were ok, I wanted to go back to a phone with cleaner Android and more future updates, hence the highly recommended G5+ and now a Nokia 6.1 with Android One. But as you and others would know, a phone is not only the OS and updates, it's the whole feel and use of the phone in all it's functions.

Every has different needs and wants, but it just comes down to what you use/need and how you use it whether one phone is better than another. I prefer the form factor and feel of the G5+ size and ergonomics compared to the Nokia and Xiaomi RN4 ( altough I love having the bigger 4000mAh battery in there at times lol ). Although I don't use fingerprint to unlock any phone, the G5+ has it on the front and I use that as a home button and the other gestures often too. Hopefully this gives you some insight into my feeling so far, but that might change later on when I'm used to the 6.1 running Android P.

Whoa, thanks for the (detailed) explanation. Cheers!

No probs, had some spare time on my hands yesterday haha.

          @ozhunter68:

After reviewing many sellers on eBay, Catch, Amazon, I decided to buy it from qd on ebay.

Also bought a rubber case and a Full curved screen protector from ebay.

Just note price does not include GST of 5% after ebay code.

        • @imcold:

Good move, one of the better sellers there on ebay and great price for the 4GB/64GB TA-1068 International model.

Did you get the case and screen protector from an Aussy seller? Your phone might get here first within 2 weeks or so.

        • +1

          @ozhunter68:

Yep got the case and screen protector today in the mail, also included was a stylus shaped paperweight.

Just need to wait for the phone now.

        • @imcold:

Nice one, that's the way to do it if you want to use phone straight away.

Phone should not be too far away, enjoy :-)

        • +1

          @ozhunter68:

Phone came today factory sealed, only problem I still my older style sims don't fit in the nano sim slots. Good thing i have a spare $2 sim.

After that my next problem is after 2020 when they start shutting down 3G networks.

Just gonna do some basic screen test.

        • @imcold:

As I am a seasoned sim slut, changing sims many times in a monthly, I've had to cut the sims down to size often.

As it turns out I had to cut an older Vodafone sim ( old $50 sim starter packs on clearance last year from HN ) down from a micro to a nano sim and worked fine.

I have not had to do this for more than a year or so as most sim packs now are the triple size with two adaptors to suit all phones and the full size for portable modems. Just watch a youtube clip and save yourself $2 and the hassle of transferring to new sim.

There are some of the real old sims that don't work 100% after cutting down to size ( from memory early Telstra sims ).

      • The ones on eBay don't seem to have Android One.

        I'll look at JB, thanks.

        • Refer to my comment above as most now ( the TA-1068 model ) do come with 8.1 on board.

      • +1

Wrong, Officeworks has 2017 Nokia 6. Big difference in HW.

    • JB sell them so they would price match Gerry.

  • Isn't the newer version called 6.1?

    • +3

Yes. I don't know why HN is calling it 6 (2018) instead of 6.1. The specs make it clear that it is the 6.1.

  • +6

    please boycott HN.

    • +1

Yes I will until there is a really good bargain.

      • Get it from JB then

    • Could someone school me why there is allot of hate for HN?

      • +16

        Where should we start -

        • He blamed customers for buying a cheap Asus Tablet on Boxing Day when it was actually a price error and called them professionals.

        • He has been complaining for years that there was no GST on goods purchased from overseas under $1000. This is now in place and as an example a lot of watches are more expensive than just the extra 10% gst. Mainly because Amazon US no longer ship to Aus.

        • If you buy a tv & other electrical goods in store the sales people try and upsell overpriced Monster hdmi cables and pointless extended warranties when you are already covered under Aus consumer law.

        • +2

$100 HDMI cable lol. I can't believe these still exists. Even Belkin is still cheaper.

        • +1

If you buy a tv & other electrical goods in store the sales people try and upsell overpriced Monster hdmi cables and pointless extended warranties when you are already covered under Aus consumer law.

All 'sales people' that work for major electronics/hi-fi retailers do this.

        • @Lorindor:

Not to the same extent as HN though.

      • +5

Probably due to Gerry Harvey lobbying for the GST to extend to online purchases from oversea which is now in action on a lot sites, and has resulted in Amazon removing the ability to shop from their international sites for us.

      • HN also is well known as Harry Normal, Harry abnormal etc. etc.
Shop attendants are just pricks picked on the street who have no skills let alone any knowledge in what they pretend to sell so basically they all work on commissions and have no mean of customer relation quality.
I witnessed 2 instances at the hub in the QV where shop attendants bullies visitors including my self for just questioning about the product and another a week ago in Epping where a shop attendant was talking on the phone a saying profanities to the other end who was not able to understand, I could not record it!

        • +1

That goes for a lot of places though. In rare instances, you'll find a salesperson who actually knows their stuff and tries to understand you before recommending something.

I've given up on asking sales people things. Most simply don't know what they're selling, and if they do, they don't know anything outside of what they sell.

Best to just do your own research, and when you're ready, go get it because no-one is going to help you.

  • +1

We don't seem to be seeing much in the way of gearbest, ali, bang, etc pushing Nokia, it's just the same old Xiaomis, I guess they'd need great pricing or the margins between grey and AU are small, where as nobody sells Xiaomi across the counter in Australia.

    • The margin is pretty big, if Nokia 7 plus China is $200 less than AU stock.

      • +1

yeah, we saw some deals in June for about $350, then nothing ….no reason we shouldn't be seeing the 7 plus as grey for $400 inc gst.

That would make it $200 less than from JB or HN who seem yo have it in the low $600's

  • +2

I'm thinking about getting it from catch instead, which has dual sim 4gb/64gb about the same price.

    • +1

Depends on if you want Australian warranty or not. To my own experience I rarely need warranty anyway and when i need it's already past warranty i.e 3+ years so…

      • I've been lucky until now (finger crossed) but I always buy from reputable oversea shops while many times I had to ask help to the Consumer Affairs Victoria because the local shop was dodging me.
Also I've the 28 Degrees credit card with it's 6 month period to claim a charge back.

      • I think I should get Australian warranty with catch

They seem willing to resolve online complaints about warranty matters.

        • +1

But not with Nokia directly. Usually manufacturer cover 24 months or more while seller do 12 months.

    • +1

That's what I did about 2 months ago. Phone was shipped/arrived very quickly, no dramas setting it up and works really well. I had a Nexus 6p before and this phone is just as fast to use, if not faster. Camera is decent, not as good as 6p but close enough for me. Battery life is phenomenal for 3000mah, I've played games on my phone and browsed reddit for the better part of a day and haven't even touched 50%.

  • Anyone know if Nokia 6.1 Plus is coming to Australia?

    • It's here already.

  • Nokia can use SD cards as adoptable memory, a big plus.

    • +1

The Nokia 6 2018 can not use SD as adoptable. Android one does not allow this. Reason: I own a Nokia 6 2018.

      • Really? I stand corrected. That poses a conundrum if you want updates and adoptable.

  • +6

There's a big spec increase in the 2018 model, so be careful which one you choose if you're looking at alternative vendors.

    Its easy to get confused between;
    a) Nokia 6 (the Officeworks model with 1.4ghz CPU)
    b) Nokia 6.1 plus (grey market phone Ozbargained lots recently)
    c) Nokia 6 with Android One (this one)
    d) Nokia 6.1 (2018) (JBHiFi $399)

As best I can tell c) & d) are the same. The Officeworks model is the much slower 2017 version.

So right now, this is the best deal if you want the locally supported Nokia 6.

Interestingly, the Officeworks page has a "new" icon next to it but is displaying a lower price & the older 1.4GHz specs, so they might have something in the works.

    Here's my research from yesterday;

    JBHiFi: https://www.jbhifi.com.au/phones/Outright-Mobile-Handsets/no…

    Officeworks: https://www.officeworks.com.au/shop/officeworks/p/nokia-6-32…

    GSM Arena Specifications
    • Nokia 6: https://www.gsmarena.com/nokia_6-6885.php
    • Nokia 6.1: https://www.gsmarena.com/nokia_6_1-8972.php
    • Nokia 6.1 Plus: https://www.gsmarena.com/nokia_6_1_plus_(nokia_x6)-9178.php

BTW if someone can explain why this is so much cheaper than the Nokia 7 Plus I'd appreciate it. Apart from a faster processor & half-inch more screen real-estate I don't see what would explain the $200 difference.

    • +2

Apart from a faster processor & half-inch more screen real-estate

The other main differences between Nokia 7 Plus and Nokia 6.1 (2018):

      • 4GB vs 3GB RAM
      • 64GB vs 32GB internal memory
      • 3800mAh vs 3000mAh battery
      • Dual primary camera vs single primary camera on back
      • Better front-facing camera

      https://www.nokia.com/en_au/phones/compare?devices=nokia-7-p…

    • +1

Don't let MP on camera fools you, all Nokia 6 have serviceable camera. Nokia 7 Plus has mid range camera (still nowhere near flagship). That alone is usually worth lots of $.

      • I don't think the Nokia 7 plus camera is midrange. It has the same image sensor as the Pixel 2 paired with Zeiss lenses. No OIS is the main difference. The Nokia software is not as good but you can sideload the Google Camera and get good results.

        • Same image sensor means nuts. The image sensor is actually really cheap, which is why for a while Chinese company like Oppo advertised they got same Sony sensors like flagship phone when in fact it costs them $22 each for the sensors. The hardware to support the sensor and software isn't there then it's about as good as midrange or worst.

And honestly, sideload Google camera apps between Nokia 7 plus and compare it to pixel 2 it's still night vs day the difference. I actually go and tested Nokia 7 plus couple of time before deciding to go with pixel 2 because it's really you get what you pay for. You want flagship camera you pay for flagship mobile. Be it OnePlus 6 or Xiaomi Mi 8 they are still better than Nokia 7 Plus.

        • +1

          @Bigboomboom:

Yes, the software is very important which is why you sideload the Google Camera. I have the Nokia 7 Plus with Google Camera and my mate has the Pixel 2. The Pixel 2 is better - I'd say it's mainly due to the OIS/EIS - but it's not night and day.

Are you saying you went and sideloaded the Google Camera app on a Nokia 7 Plus and tested it? In a store?

  • Just picked one up from my local HN, it's a 6.1 running Android One.

    https://i.imgur.com/fXC684S.jpg

    • Awesome, keen to see how it runs for you, please report back

  • It's for my mum, her S5 died yesterday and she wanted a cheap/decent replacement. It seemed very nice in store for the price.

  • +3

Thanks OP, I got it from JB on a pricematch #becauseFUGerryHarvey, and got the black/copper colour, which HN doesn't do. The JB one is also the dual-sim version, apparently.

The HN website says it's the 6, but it's actually the 6.1, model TA-1050 (as seen in the "about phone" in the settings (I went and looked at HN before going to JB 🙂)

OW has the old version, not this one.

I bought this because my wife's Nexus 5X died yesterday, so I had to give her mine, which is a Xiaomi Mi A1.

So far it seems great - snappy, fast to setup, has NFC unlike the A1. Has the July security update, unlike the A1 which is still May, IIRC.

The fingerprint reader is weird, though - small and way down near the middle of the phone. About my only complaint, though, so far.

    Very happy at this point.

    • Can you check if it is dual sim please

    • Can u check box and confirm there are two imie numbers.

      • There's two numbers shown, but they're both IMEI1. I guess that's what fooled the salesbloke who didn't look too closely at it.

        • +1

Can you tell me the model number.

This is what a list i found on XDA. The variants are for different regions with different channels.

          Single SIM models:
          TA-1016, TA-1050
          Dual SIM models:
          TA-1043, TA-1045, TA-1068,TA-1089

        • @imcold: As I said above, it's the TA-1050

  • Appears this phone become really bugged if you decide to update the phone to the latest OS.

You'll get static that can only be fixed by turning off Dolby Atmos

I see a lot of people here saying Google do the updates for Android One. Very common misconception. Updates come from the manufacturers, not Google. But these manufacturers promise to deliver timely updates and… I think 2 major upgrades or something.

Bottom line is, the only phones Google update themsleves are Pixels and nothing else.

Seems like a better deal to pay a few more $ to get the 4GB version from Amazon AU?

Or pay $50 less for the same thing from eBay? 4GB version is not officially sold in AU, so either way it's a grey import.

      • You can get the 4GB/64GB cheaper on eBay than the 3GB/32GB from HN? Do you have a link, I've been looking this week at getting some version of the 6.1
