That's a very good deal - I did a quick google and the 15cm sells for 53GBP ($95AUD) and the 24cm for 79GBP ($140). The 20cm seems to be discontinued (maybe that's why it's reduced here?).

    • 15cm is same price on good guys website

What's the difference between these knives?

The one you link to has the pattern of Damascus steel. NOT folded Damascus steel. Nasty nasty things.

  • It’s made in Japan?

    • Damascus Damascus baby!

    • Item location: Shenzen, China

      • +1

Damascus refers to the technique of folding the steel during forging, not the location of origin.

I know that. Just pointing out that they are sold as Japanese knives, implying they are made in Japan which they are probably not.

Better buy a Global knife, I used more than ten years, still going strong.

          Which is quite subjective.
Some people like Japanese knives, some tend to use European. They are different in style and require different techniques to handle. Despite Gordon Ramsay using Global in MasterChef, his home preference is more of European type knives like Zwilling.
In my option Global metal handle is bad, giving less control of the blade. Shun is better for me, or Tojiro for slicing sashimi.

        • @pupkin:
agree, the Global knife is to light to me too, giving less control.

Most people say the Global knives are not that great, but I like them.

          Mostly because of autoclaving.

Essentially just pretty knives. Made by/sourced bu Lakeland, who sell all manner of kitchen and laundry stuff. Probably made in a generic factory that also makes IKEA stuff.
Still, cheap price for a pretty knife that is probably quite functional.

    • Knife hipsters.

    • Could you recommend the best (perhaps flashiest) knife for about $200? General purpose in a small kitchen.

If you are in Sydney go to the knife show. Talk to the makers and fondle all the knives you want until you find the right one.

      • I got a VG10 Damascus santoku for less than $100. Came blazing sharp. Sharpens well. Is that what you're after? I accidentally bought 2 so if you just happen to live in South East Queensland I can show you.

Below is a link to my favourite knife. It maintains a shaving edge with a good whetstone combo. It's called a Shun Classic 20cm Chefs Knife

  • This is a decent deal - looks like a reasonable knife for the price.

The furi pro knife on there is a decent deal as well

  • They have the 15cm for the same price on ebay if you scroll down the page. I got this in store about 2-3 weeks ago for $50. They look the part. Feels nice, but the handle shows it's Chinese origin with not quite perfect finish. Still worth this money.

    • Just tried to buy that and they charged my card but said the transaction has been declined…

  • Good deal Op, I think one of the most frustrating thing we experience buying a knife is that you can not see it or feel it before purchase. I couldn't find reviews for this knife yet, for $37.50 you can't go wrong, spending extra $40 will get you the Global G2 which is my workhorse knife.

  • The incredibly low price for 67 layers of Damascus steel causes me to suspect that they could be an imitation of the brand Tomoe and might not actually be made in Japan.

Tomoe's website has no listing of the design and their top of the range knives only have 16 layers.

    • "Damascus steel" means nothing these days other it has a pretty pattern, it is still eye candy on these types of knives. You can buy the same core with plain single stainless sides, patterned stainless sides or folded steel patterning (67 layers in case) sides. They are all the same.

This Lakeland knife uses a VG-10 core with each side covered with softer, less rust prone, less brittle stainless "67 layers". The vg-10 core could well be made in Japan, the side steel in China and assembled in China.

  • Seems to be sold out. I got the 18cm instead, same price
