  • dang if ram prices follow suit, i'd regret building the dell optiplex

LP-1050Ti is costing too much compared to this

I was going to buy the LP1050ti for my optiplex. What I had done instead was reusing the i5 4th gen CPU, bought used components off gumtree: 1150 motherboard, nzxt h440 case, ddr3 ram, new supernova G2 , new thermal paste, additional 140mm fans. Plus the rx580 it will cost me approximately $650 in total. I think your wallet will be happier than mine :)
Might be able to sell off my old components for $150 so a net cost of $500.

    • RAM prices have different market forces to GPUs.

Death to Bitcoin is coming!!!! Finally!!! Cheap Video Cards!!! No more when lambo!!!

RX 580 is basically a slightly tweaked RX 480, 5-10% increase in performance, if a game is too slow with a 480, it will be too slow with a 580

I have OC'd my RX 480 to 580 specs without issue too

So a year ago the RX 480 was cheaper than this, many deals!

So I would say prices still suck and desktop GPU technology is barely advancing :-)

      • it is much better than earlier in the year. these cards were costing 500 dollar. it should be under 300 aud given how old these cards are.

      • I wouldn't say GPU tech is "barely advancing", this was only released 10 months later with an improved voltage controller and higher stock clocks. It's not meant to be a new performance generation, it's the same architecture and node.

The time gap is too small to judge how technology is progressing, most generations last 2-3 years.
And lets not pretend these prices aren't fantastic considering..

      • The RX580 was just a holding pattern for the mid-range GPU. It's a damn good card for a mid-range. It's a par with the 1060 6gb. AMD instead focused on a whole new CPU lineup that was a MASSIVE leap forward.

Then they released what I like to call "beta" Vega lineup. The first iteration that is good, but just got hammered by the bitcoin craze so were not worth the price. If the Vega 56 and 64 were available for MSRP (or lower now that they've been out a while) they would be a great card that is a leap forward. Putting HBM2 in the cards was an awesome move. Were they as fast as the 1080ti? Nope, but they are still fantastic, especially if you have a 1440p 140hz monitor that you want to push and get the advantage of Freesync.

GPU tech is advancing, but honestly where is the place it needs to advance to? There is nothing that the 1080ti cannot run at excessive frame rates. There isn't a gaming need for advancements at the moment, there isn't a Crysis that is beyond the reach of GPUs. The only reason that people need 1080ti is for future proofing or for 4k, but 4k high refresh monitors aren't really worth investing in at this time anyway.

        • Yep, Vega 64 for under $500 might make it appealing.
Apparently there is a refresh of RX580's due soon. But do't expect too much of an improvement.
This GPU holding pattern is getting painful.

        • VR chews up GPUs.

  • How is the cooling on these cards for mining?

    • Is it still worth mining in Australia with our energy costs?
