Izzo My Way Alex Leva Coffee Machine $3594 + Shipping (Normally $5000) at New Caffe Italia (Ignore Post)

42

I must be turning into a doddery old codger. Usually I do my due diligence, but I slipped up with this. I would now suggest this company are too dodgy to deal with given the comments below. Machine and price is good, but the company are not. Thanks to those members.

Not content with the Breville and Sunbeams? After something with a bit of theatre and technique to master? This lever espresso machine is highly thought of amongst coffee nerds. This model is supposed to have been superseded or no longer sold in Australia, being replaced by another model which is the same inside, just a different body. I suspect this site may be selling grey imports as this is quite cheap (shipping is too). Sign up to the newsletter (pop up when you visit the site) for an extra $15 off coupon.

Thread on here about it:
https://coffeesnobs.com.au/brewing-equipment-extreme-machine…

Note - this machine requires either being plumbed into mains pressure (which means it's very quiet), or a kit that supplies pressure from a bottle of water (the usual solution is referred to as the Flojet). These work with the 15 litre plastic office water cooler bottles (which you also need to find). This is one place that has them (straight off Google) $275:

https://www.coffeeparts.com.au/flojet-bw5000a

Then get yourself a decent grinder and you're away to excellent coffee (after you learn how to drive it).

Quite a few other machines there too, but check which version it is. For example they have the Izzo Alex Duetta IV, but it's not the latest model (still good though).

Not everyone's cup o' tea, but if it is, it's a good price. Shipping is $24 to me.

  • I don't think I even know anyone who likes coffee that much.

    • the people selling coffee like it that much.

lovely machine for the person that has everything.

i’m over the $2500 semi commercial machine for home phase, now just use a sunbeam thermostat block, uses less space in the kitchen, heats up faster, uses less electricity, and makes just as good coffee …single person household so i needed machine designed for single cup then turn off use.

      • Yes, the long heat up time is not good. I use my Breville 980 the same as you - cup in 5 minutes. I reckon the 920/Smartgrinder is the best price/reward equation. By all accounts the levers to produce a speccy cup, but at a cost.

  • In Italy the retail price (converted to AUD) is $3,875.
Now tell me where did these guys get "normally" $5,000 from?

    • Isn’t that pretty standard with anything imported? Stuff is always more expensive here, particularly low volume sellers. It’s $5750 at another site.

      • High end coffee stuff is like Hi-Fi. The retailers here always bung on a huge margin.

        • +1

In Italy resellers have margins too and the cost of the life in Italy is very high.
In Australia when we talk about margins rip off there is always the excuse that stuff came from Asia where the cost of life is very low.
Computer software houses where already investigated for ripping off Australians.
So retail price in Italy is $3,875 (converted) while in Australia (normally) is $5,000 which means $1,125 Australian rip off.
Bare in mind that $3,875 is the price normal people spend to buy ONE machine in Italy so the Australian importer, New Caffe Italia, probably pay them around $2,700 (-30%) or even less depending on quantity imported.
          Rip off Australia style.

        • +1

@dealhunt: Why don't you start up your own enterprise and undercut them?

        • +1

@owli: i think the deals we were getting from amazon germany for denon amps and amazon US for computer gear shows we do get ripped in australia for somethings.

but retailers have a right to import and sell at they price they feel the market will pay at a profit that supports the life style they expect for their efforts.

        • @garage sale: In fact the government allow it, the people we vote allow it.
In Australia there is monopoly nearly for everything and almost everything is too expensive and overcharged.
When consumers say that prices in Australia are a rip off if compared with US, then trolls says that in US they sell bigger numbers so people buy computer software from US.
But M$crosoft & Adobe & Co. are not happy and put regional restrictions on that software so Australian consumers are ripped off again!

    • Casa Espresso has it for $5000, and TalkCoffee $5750. Not sure if you added on 10% GST, 5% import duty & $50 import dec, but shipping these things costs an absolute fortune due to the weight and the box sizes protecting against dings, especially for lever.

      • In Italy the tax is 19% and consider a retailer from here won't pay tax in Italy but 10% here.
So they buy it for $2,700 minus 19% tax, how much for delivery via ship $200 each is plenty of money, add 10% GST, add $50 imp dec, 5% imp duty.
You do the sum as I'm already tired.

More attempting how they justified a normal price. But agree - machines (and grinders) are ridiculously priced here.

However I just noticed this is New Coffee Italia rather than the New Caffe Italia indiciated in the title. They drop ship straight from Italy to my recollection, their street address is just an office.

I would be definitely asking if they are being set up for Australian conditions first - to cater for the slightly higher voltage, as typically EU imported machines run hot. Plus Italy likes robusta coffees which require higher temps too. I've got two LSM lever groups on my kitchen bench and they appear to be heated by boiler water directly, so it could be just a matter of lowering the PID but maybe not - it's a pretty finely tuned setup. That could concern me as I've heard of coffee stores here refusing to service machines from this mob.

        • +1

@Janko: I understood that you know very well these coffee machines.
I suggest you do some homework and learn how to do basic service and gradually improve your skills and save a lot of money.
There are plenty of videos on Youtube.
I used to service coffee machines and some time ago I helped a friend set up a new deli shop.
The shop owner insisted to call a technician and after he wasted 1 hour on the phone asking prices for a basic service (around $300-400) he finally gave up because the waiting queue was too long and let me service it.
          Total cost for material $18.

        • @dealhunt:

Agree - grinders as well - I hate how the stores try to justify $1000 'semi-commercial' grinders when I had a $350 Preciso for 5 years faithfully doing 5 shots a day costing me about $20 in parts in that time, and next to no time to replace.

Machines - I already service my own. Originally bought a dead HX machine, fixed it up, hacked in a rotary pump and am currently building a dual lever, dual boiler machine to my own design.

        • @Janko: I think you’re right that they are in Italy. Their phone number starts +35. Presumably that’s Italy. They have service centres in Syd, Mel & Pth so as good as a lot of Aust supplied machines. I’ll be self servicing anyway so happy to get the lower price.

        • Another cost for importers is geting Australian approval as it’s electrical. I still agree though. Problem is they sell three coffee machines and think ‘I’m a businessman, I need a Mercedes and private school for the kids’ and then bung up the price to pay for it. Whereas they’re really just a schmuck selling appliances - used Toyota and government schools.

        • @wfdTamar:

Self servicing. You don't mind replacing the control board? Due to this machine running off a 30cent EU to AU power adaptor?

        • @wfdTamar:

That's good to hear and I think you're going to love it - they're such a zen-like experience with the silence and ability to somewhat correct for a wrong grind on the fly. The lever group head on the Leva has a great reputation, it's a thing of beauty. I was shocked that they in themselves cost each a grand, but when they arrived, I thought they were worth every penny, even as an ornament.

        • @nickm: I'd change the plug.

    • yep and in italy they are still making a profile even at that price.

and don’t knock private schools, if it wasn’t for private schools our gov schools would be over crowded, bit like if we had no private hospitals public waiting times would be longer.

also private schools open up,their gyms and pools for community use on weekends ….my son does swim classes at the private school pool on weekends along with other kids from the local gov schools.

he also does basket ball along with the other teams at another schools gym.

      • No private schools/hospitals, more money to build government schools/hospitals. Anyway I wasn't knocking them, just suggesting those people don't do enough to warrant earning enough to pay the fees. But that's another discussion.

This is actually who you are buying from
    https://www.coffeeitalia.it/

  • Thanks nickm - I have changed the post to reflect that.

  • Annoying thing is to cancel the transaction the credit card has to be cancelled. Last time it took them 5 months to send a replacement card! Coles Mastercard - good card, but hopeless service.

    • This happens when you have those rebadged cards including the useless Commbank credit card.
I had a long discussion with Commbank regarding disputing an international transaction, on their web site they are vague and misleading and say you have 30 days time to lodge a complaint, then I talk to them and they say 90 days BUT they may not put that in writing, the reason is for privacy!
And yes Commbank will cancel your card when you apply for a domestic transaction dispute, this is a Stone Age mentality!!!
I also got the 28 Degrees credit card, they allow 6 months so you got all the time to deal with a charge back, they don't cancel the card, everything is stated, no BS!

      • I have a 28 too. I thought they were run by the same mob as Coles, but then I think Coles MC was sold off to Citibank a few months ago. Their phone menu is abysmal too. Barely audible call centre. Ah the joys of being a cheapskate hey?

Even when I tried to send them feedback to suggest what was lacking - that didn't work!

        • Don't waste your time with them anymore.
When I buy overseas I always use my 28 Degrees card unless I deal with Amazon and similar sites which give me 100% consumer protection.
Those on the forums who troll about those grocery made credit/debit cards don't know what they are talking about until time comes to do some real transactions.

        • @dealhunt: I've found the Coles one great for Price Protection (2 years) and even the Flybuys points add up to a fair bit.

        • @wfdTamar: Yes I knew that 2 year price protection…. just the item has to be still available and at a reduced price from the same seller (impossible) or from another seller (also impossible) :)
But price protection is a different matter when dealing with a transaction dispute or chargeback so I'm still with 28 Degrees :)

        • @dealhunt: Has to be the same seller. It does work. I've made $100's out of it. I'd love a card that had price protection from any seller.

    • How long since you ordered? As they have a satisfaction guarantee, surely they wouldn't charge the 10% restocking fee if they haven't processed it yet.

I noticed their Facebook page says they usually respond within hours - I'd be asking some pertinent questions like whether it's coming from O/S and you getting doubly hit with GST etc.

      • Ordered last night. Already cancelled card this morning, so they won't be able to even charge it (hopefully). By all accounts any satisfaction guarantee is worthless (going by the comments on the sites nick found).

        • That's a pity - but probably safest as any saving here is offset by what looks like a significant risk.

  • It not worth importing extreem coffee machines, no local warranty, GST, Duty, expensive shipping, risk of shipping damage.

I just bought a ECM Synchronika from ebay au seller, wait for a 10% coupon, and 2.5k of 5% off woolies, cash rewards, Flybuys, FF and you'll save heaps and have local warranty and service.

It my seem extreem for a coffee machine but if you bought 2 per day it's only 2 year return or so.

My $50 Espressotoria is far superior to this old hunk of machinery.
    How much per pod?

    • +1

Superior in some respects, definitely. Pods can't be beaten for convenience, a minute to warm up, machine breaks and one doesn't need to service it, just put in the bin. The Lexa would look out of place in dump of a kitchen where the Espressotoria would fit perfectly. Stale coffee is very consistent too, so once you find a pod you like, you can be assured it won't change. Also pod machines inherently guard against excessive consumption of coffee.

      • When my nespresso pod machine broke nespresso couriered out a replacement machine for while they were fixing mine, paid for the return shipping, fixed my machine and sent it back with 20 free pods for the inconvenience. I didn't have to put it in the bin.

        • How many times the price of a Espressotoria was your Nespresso?

  • 3.5k you have Rocket R58, Isomac Pro Dual Boiler, Profitec Pro 700 in the same category, I don't see any point of getting Izzo Leva.

    • Yup and there's a person above happy with a $12 Nescafe. Horses for courses i'n'it?

    • Failed entrepreneurs who didn't realise that importing a coffee machine from Italy would not make its price (and customer) support in competition with already well established businesses and products.

    • Profitec Pro 800 is the same category rather than the three non-levers you mention - and it's typically $4500-$5000. Personally I'd choose the Leva with its bigger boiler and better group head - but if renting and you couldn't plumb it in and didn't want to go the flojet route, Pro 800 would be better.

  • +1

Thought some of you would like this grinder to go with your $12 Nescafe jobbie
